JIMI HENDRIX: FREAKISH BLUES | New track 2021

  • There's never enough Jimi Hendrix but there are lots of live improvisations which contain moments of genius and the ingredients for new songs. I had the idea of taking words from Jimi's interviews and mixing them with some of his best playing to assemble new tracks. This one takes an early interview for BBC Saturday club when he talks about Chas Chandler persuading him to come to England and his aspiration to create a new type of music with "a little more feeling" which he described a "a sort of freakish blues". I love the part where he describes his recordings so far as "just a phase - a very small part of us". All of the instruments are from live recordings by the original Experience. I've used some remixing techniques to tempo match different sections and increase the stereo ambience. Thanks also to all the photographers and artists who posted the visual images on Hendrix inspired Facebook groups.
    I'm Stephen Godsall and I'm a composer/multi instrumentalist from Dorset, England. Thanks for watching and please subscribe to help grow my channel.

    Hendrix and Beck did not jam "Superstition" in 1968, Stevie Wonder didn't write it until 1972, Jimi died in 1970. Stevie did write "Superstition" with Jeff Beck in mind, however, Beck having appeared on his 1971 album "Music of my Mind" when he'd visited Motown in an aborted recording attempt for the Jeff Beck Group's "Rough and Ready" album. Stevie decided the riff was too good to just give away and recorded it for "Talking Book" in 1972. Beck then covered it with Beck, Bogert and Appice in 1973. It would have been great to hear Hendrix play it, the the song didn't exist until two years after his death.

    Anyone who is a Hendrix Freak knows Jimi was a insecure profectionist he even thought Purple Haze could of been much better - I thought this was put together very well and loved the sound - Jimi on the other hand might not of thought the same and maybe a bit embarrassed and maybe honored at the same time that someone digged him that much to professionally made this recording and video - Well done my friend and as Jimi would say " PLAY ON CHILD " 🎸

    Jimi loved pushing the boundaries and experimenting and was not shy about borrowing from others work. We can only guess at what his genius could have produced if he had lived but I am sure this concept would have been fully explored by him in his own inimitable way.

    • @Mike-rw2nh
      @Mike-rw2nh 2 года назад +1

      Very well said, good sir. It’s good to see someone acknowledge that while Jimi was a monstrously gifted individual, he had his influences too. He would have been 79 now. God only knows what his back catalogue would have been. I suspect he wouldn’t have sounded anything like he did in his 20s. Sadly, the Miles Davis collaboration didn’t come to fruition, nevertheless, I do speculate as to what he might have got up to with the modern day creative freak show talent available - Jacob Collier springs to mind. Apologies for the ‘chapter and verse’ message, but your comment really sparked my imagination.

      It may have just been a Castle Made Of Sand (sorry), but if he would have stuck around to this day... I would really have like to see Jimis idea realized.
      The one about him wanting to buy a ranch and turning into a club house / giant studio. A place with an open door policy, where various musicians would mingle, jam, and exchance ideas.
      It would certainly have brought about some really fascinating work. And not just with Miles Davis.

    Honestly, it would have been better without the interview snippets, if only because I don't think Jimi himself ever would have done such a thing. I'd love to hear a version with just the instrumental bits. I imagine there could be lots of things done with various jams and outtakes in order to assemble new tracks, a bit like Zappa used to do it.

Personally, I would ask you to continue your endeavors. Please try to highlight Jimi's "more mellow moments", if you know what I'm saying. This particular piece is somewhat crashing throughout. Good work. Thank you. I look forward to your future productions.

      S: Thanks for the info. I think I was misunderstanding your work. I guess you are producing the music and putting J's comments where you want them. I guess I thought you were using heretofore unused music from J. Hmmm ? Is it possible for you to sample Jimi's music and interweave your musical accompaniment with his comments and lyrics?? That's what Beautiful People did decades ago and it was "RILLY GROOVY"
      Thx. I'm not sure what his "sister" and her bevy of lawyers would say.

      That still gives chance to use some of his brilliant live guitar sounds in the same way that Beautiful People did and put them in a new musical context. On the other hand "Electrified" uses his voice to tell a story but all the playing is on electric ukulele, because that was the first instrument that he learned - and I've tried to imagine what would have happened if he'd added FX.

Or if you do not agree maybe it is the color of his skin. It does not matter what you think I know Jimi hendrix is the finest guitarist to ever pick up the guitar, all do respect to the others.

      Agreed - the problem was you couldn't hear the original Hendrix work. That's not what I'm doing; my track is all Jimi's band playing together. The recordings are over 50 years old and anyone can hear the originals. Cutting them up to make something new doesn't harm the Hendrix legacy and can help to show it in a new light; fair enough if it's not to your taste. Luckily most people see it positively.
