OLD BANGERS DEPT. - Do drummers ever get old?
My cousin had a garage way back; every week in the local paper he'd promote the cheap cars in his "Old Bangers Department". In those days, even newish cars broke down a lot and you could almost rely on an old banger to cause you trouble. If it wasn't dodgy mechanics, it was damp electrics or body rot. Engine fires were a common hazard. Many owners spent more time repairing their car than driving.
Nowadays you don't hear so much about faulty old cars. You do see a lot of veteran drummers though - some of them can still play! If we can avoid "repetitive strain injury" and dodge hearing loss, there's no reason why we can't carry on playing percussion until we drop.

BEACONS; Music for the South Wales mountains
Просмотров 86Месяц назад
The mountains of the Bannau Brycheiniog national park have distinctive "fan" escarpments seen in this film, all taken on a recent hiking trip. They're friendly giants, except when the cold winds whistle or mist descends, which it often does due to prevailing Westerly winds from the Atlantic ocean. Wales is such a beautiful country but also quiet and depopulated in many places; we often walked a...
SALT PATHS: A Coastal Excursion for Ukulele and Piano
Просмотров 82Месяц назад
I review albums for the excellent Belgian online magazine Jazz'Halo and have recently reviewed excellent duet albums for mandolin/piano, banjo/piano and this month bouzouki/piano. But I've never heard any jazz for ukulele/piano. I've also been enjoying playing the piano recently so this is my first piece for ukulele/piano duet. The film features scenes in Cornwall and Dorset, on the South West ...
CRUMMACKDALE; a Yorkshire Dales improvisation
Просмотров 592 месяца назад
This month a track celebrating the mysteries of Crummackdale, an area in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales limestone country. Here rivers disappear underground then reappear further down the valley, there are waterfalls where no water flows and lots of strange rock formations. The film shows those landscapes, with photos I took this Spring - we walked for 3 days in the Crummack/Moughton area an...
TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE

Featuring the wonderful voice of Natalie Orrells, who described this as "a very angry song - is it about someone you've worked with?" It's about a lot of things really but luckily I don't often get angry, except of course when I listen to the news! The song took an unusually long time to finish, trying out different versions before I realised it needs two singers to balance the brass arrangemen...
FOR JULIAN - For guitar and quintet, in memory of Julian Bream
Просмотров 1334 месяца назад
Julian Bream (1933-2020) was a pioneering classical guitarist and lutenist. I was lucky enough to see him live over many years, playing both guitar and lute, including a concert of lute songs with Peter Pears. His research and transcriptions of lute music did a huge amount to promote this brilliant repertoire of Tudor lute music, particularly the compositions of John Dowland. Bream also inspire...
SOU'WESTER! A sodden landscape
Просмотров 405 месяцев назад
Early 2024 has been exceptionally wet in England - rain, wind, mud and fallen trees all over the place. That sort of weather comes from the South West here, hence the oilskin hat known as "Sou'Wester". Such weather has a certain charm - but maybe not for months on end. This unsettled music in 7/4 time reminds me of our sodden Spring. You'll hear mandolin and ukulele themes over very squelchy el...
JIMI HENDRIX with MILES DAVIS? Purple Guitar, Kinda Blue Trumpet
Просмотров 28 тыс.7 месяцев назад
People often say “If only Jimi and Miles had got around to recording together” so I wondered “What if they had? What might it sound like?”. This is my attempt to answer that question, although it uses new technology, because I'm sure Jimi and Miles would never have stood still. For anyone interested in the technicalities, I used granular synthesis, vocoding, a little AI and a lot of luck to cre...
QUANTOCK FANFARE

The Quantocks; a range of heather clad hills on the coast just East of Exmoor. That's where this music began life and the film is of the local landscape, including Halswell Park where we rented a cottage. It's quite a long piece but the only notes I actually played are in the first 17 seconds. From there I used sequencing software to turn them upside down, backwards, forwards, gated and arpeggi...
WHEN A RICH MAN HAS THE BLUES
Просмотров 2189 месяцев назад
Does he feel as wretched as a poor man - or indeed a poor woman? Few of us have been in both situations so it's a rhetorical question. The title came to me first then I wrote some lyrics, then the music. It was surprising to find the title hasn't been used before. The first tune I wrote didn't quite work so I started again. At first it was arranged in a Gypsy jazz style and performed with my ba...
IMAGINARY LANDSCAPE

Electronic music has moved a long way in the last 35 years; this piece combines technology from both ends of that timeline. The sound source is a Yamaha CX5 music computer which I used to assembled a fugue with 12 different voices. This was then developed, treated and tempo modulated with recent plug-ins from Reason Studios, particularly Objekt, Mimic, BV-X Vocoder, Alligator and Synchronous. T...

From the EP "Winter's Child" on Bandcamp; stephengodsall.bandcamp.com/album/winters-child Sheet music also included. A friend told me about his experiences on dating apps for mature romantics - after that I couldn't resist writing this song! It features the surprisingly unusual combination of acoustic and banjo ukuleles, plus three types of ukulele percussion. Hi, I'm Stephen Godsall and I'm a ...

amazing!!
This is music i could listen to and feel better. oh..purple geetar
my humble attempt...ruclips.net/video/1BdhniEBpPg/видео.html
I think Hendrix was very much like John Coltrane both in spirit and musical expression. Hendrix would sometimes introduce himself on the electric saxophone. I always wondered if this was an homage to Coltrane.
very beautiful ... being fan of both Miles and Hendrix I like this a lot ... I always tried to imagine Hendrix playing jazz ... nice
pointless
dig this...dig Prince and Miles too..
You did a great job....Very interesting.... Keep u the good work...!!
Wow, if we could add basquits artwork, all boxes would be checked
Uh-oh, is that Janie Hendrix lawyer...?
What Wasn't, Still Isn't ! There Have Been Many Trying to Make a Name for Themselves on the Work of Great Masters! This is an Example!
Yeah man ,I dig it ❤
I don’t like it when people claim a dead person as an advocate. Respectfully, you do not know what Jimi would think. I love your earlier “new” Jimi song btw
It should take about a half a day to get there !
If we travel by my dragonfly?
Nice work man! A very cool thing to try!
I think, I thought? It was Grooooovy!
Pushing forward the boundaries of uke folk-jazz!
that sounds like something from another world,
Mission was accomplished 😉
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Gotta say - very enjoyable work and thanks for the techplanations, but they would skewer you
Esto es verdad o IA?
This really works. It's a little disjointed in places, but I think that actually adds to the appeal, knowing that it's fabricated. It's sort of like listening to (them) work out new ideas in real time.
Unfuckingreal
Miles: Hey Hendrix lets play? Hendrix: Yes miles I want to play with your girl 😂
Супер.. Два гения..
fake
Like!
Is this real? Sounds contemporary.

❤❤
I just do not see any point in 'theoretical collaborations', even when well-meant. This video is just guesswork that any non-musician could do.
Very cool! The two admired each other, and Jack DeJohnette has explained that his drumming on some parts of "Live-Evil" came about when Miles played some tracks on the Band of Gypsies album and hinted that he wanted him to play something like a Buddy Miles groove, but with his jazz approach. Of course John McLaughlin was a sometime member of Miles' band around this time, but it was great to hear what kind of sounds Jimi might have come up with.
Thanks Louise - I'm interested in the Jack DeJohnette quote which I hadn't heard before!
I appreciate this!
A dreamer’s dream, AI Oh my 🧐
Dos genios 🙏....si hubiera sido realidad ❤🎺....desde Argentina 🇦🇷✌️
Cool and great stuff-----Two of the ALL TIME greats in American music.
Wish whoever would stop releasing this rubbish. Only listen and buy the first three LPs plus greatest hits and Band of Gypsys
Fantastic, I like it, It sounds real too
In '69 they had sessions , specifically at Mr.Davis' apt.well documented at least in 2 books. " Jimi had someone else knock on his door, Miles being apprehensive ( paranoid & arrogant ?) looking thru the door hole, " where's Jimi, I want Jimi ....."
Miles was not teaching Jimi Jazz or theory. There is no evidence that he was.
this was fkn awesome thank u
Well done!
Yes, I made a track called Here comes the sun 2 under username dizwaltney2
Thanks - loved your film. The playing reminded me of Jimi's quieter improvisation at Woodestock; great stuff
Wow... Hendrix fan since I was 16 and heard a lot of posthumous stuff, and I dug this so much. I agree, though it was hard to hear what Jimi was saying.
Thanks Chris
Beautiful
Nice one! as you say, bluesy but different!
Thanks Chris!
Hendrix and Beck did not jam "Superstition" in 1968, Stevie Wonder didn't write it until 1972, Jimi died in 1970. Stevie did write "Superstition" with Jeff Beck in mind, however, Beck having appeared on his 1971 album "Music of my Mind" when he'd visited Motown in an aborted recording attempt for the Jeff Beck Group's "Rough and Ready" album. Stevie decided the riff was too good to just give away and recorded it for "Talking Book" in 1972. Beck then covered it with Beck, Bogert and Appice in 1973. It would have been great to hear Hendrix play it, the the song didn't exist until two years after his death.
Expérience of Jimi Hendrix only thé best style in guitar perfection.
