  • Putting my friend's old i7-950 hardware in my workshop PC after an upgrade.
    I never planned on uploading this, due to incomplete footage. But I decided to test my new video card, using hardware encoding with Powerdirector 13. I probably should have used a shorter video, because the final cut ended up at almost 6GB.

    The On-off-on at first power on is common on intel hardware since the 775 days. More common with aftermarket boards than say Dell. I think it has something to do with the BIOS auto adjusting settings or some kind of a quick test. but not sure. Some boards with do 2 or 3 power on cycles if they have not been powered on for some time. My I5-2550K didn't have as many "dual power on" cycles after the initial boot, but if it doesn't get shut down correctly it does do this. Also I built a FX-8350 system and AIDA64 CPU QUEEN benchmark showed it just under the I7-920.

    • @Maxxarcade
      @Maxxarcade  9 лет назад +1

      I've never seen the on-off cycles, unless it's the first boot after a CPU swap or clock speed change. Not sure why this board does it every time when XMP is on.

    • @WaybackTECH
      @WaybackTECH 9 лет назад

      My ABIT P35 board dual power cycles on every power on. It is a 775 with the P35 chipset. I had an Asus X38 and X48 boards, both did the dual power on cycles as well. Although not all the time.

    • @santi0797
      @santi0797 9 лет назад

      Maxxarcade the dual power cycle is completely normal, it happens when you change memory settings or if you overclock the system, it happens in my 775 boards with different chipsets (965, g31 and x48), and by the way that i7 950 performs better than the fx 8350, thats because of its higher performance per core compared to the fx series, even an i7 920 overlocked is better than the 8350

    • @Maxxarcade
      @Maxxarcade  9 лет назад +1

      santi0797 I know it's normal right after the settings are changed, but I've never had one cycle every single time, even when no changes are made. Maybe that's normal for this board though. Still doesn't explain the locking up on POST, corrupted BIOS etc.

      Maxxarcade maybe the northbridge or southbridge temps are too high, i heard that some x58 boards overheat, and these kind of problems occured, maybe the thermal paste is too old and inneficient, check the temps with aida, i use that for my asus rampage formula x48

    Still running an i7-920 at 3.67Ghz on an EVGA X58 SLI w/24GB memory and a GTX 770 Classified.
    I'm just now replacing this board and proc and moving to an i7-5820k on the x99 platform; the 920 was that good. Only reason I'm replacing it right now is due to age of the motherboard and proc, coming up on 7 years now.

  • @newtekie1
    @newtekie1 9 лет назад

    The double boot thing when you first turn the computer on is because the BCLK is overclocked. That is totally normal for the x58 platform when the BCLK is overclocked.

    • @Maxxarcade
      @Maxxarcade  9 лет назад

      Ah, that explains it then. My G41 based system at work never does that, so I figured the settings were just too high or something. I'll probably just leave the XMP off then, since I don't like having to double cycle it on every boot.

    Interesting with the graphics driver issues with Nvidia and AMD hardware. I've been running an AMD Phenom II X4 965BE on an Asus M5A97 board since I built it back in mid 2012. It's had a GTX550Ti and that ran fine. Upgraded it to a GTX950 last November and that's been great, too.

    i have one of those budget evga 430 watt PSU's that i had laying around running a 6300 and AMD r9 285 both with a slight overclock running fine lol , the psu barely gets warm , i really want something with more headroom though. i just find it funny that some people think you need a 600 + watt psu for a full mid end AMD system

    • @Maxxarcade
      @Maxxarcade  9 лет назад +1

      At the time this was built, that plan was to have multiple GTX 570 cards and an i7-980X. It would have needed quite a bit.
      The PSU in my FX-8150 rig is an old 520W Corsair, and it doesn't have to work very hard. I could probably even run it with a 330W Antec EA-330D, since the +12v ratings are only slightly less than the Corsair.

    • @MrGeforcerFX
      @MrGeforcerFX 9 лет назад

      I have usually gone with 550 watts in my builds they offer the most flexibility imo, My 8320 pushed 4.6ghz and that's pulling around 165 watts at load just from the CPU then add in the GTX 286 video card and if i am pushing both the CPU and GPu they consume 400 watts by themselves.

Got 4 pcs running right now. Emachines Pentium 4, Around 500.00 when new, Emachines quad 2 squad, 6600. 600.00 around five to six years ago. Emachines Core I3. 300.00 brand new a few years ago, Asus Laptop Core I7, 3610. 550.00 a couple years ago. Looks like I am saving money vs my first purchase at 5000.00 lol

    I have a i7 4790k, and the only problems i have had with it. is that i overclocked it with some unstable settings. and before this i had i Core i5 750 and i overvolted the heck out of that thing
    up to 1.440 volts and it never showed any problems with handling it. so i can't see why you think that intel is so unreliable.
    while the pc i built for my dad(AMD A10 5800K) has an Samsung 830 SSD and it is still as slow as a pentium 4 with a harddrive. and it is not overheating or anything.
    Not sure if the higher end AM3+ platform is sluggish like the FM2 platform but if it is anything similair i'd consider boycotting AMD

    A shame, the 1366 platform still has a huge following due to being able to pick up hex core Xeon chips for next to nothing. Sadly the motherboards are just becoming very rare. Also I'd bet in many things that bog standard i7 is as fast as the fx, not much of a upgrade at all.

    • @Maxxarcade
      @Maxxarcade  9 лет назад

      darkwaterblue The faster LGA1366 CPU's were still going for more than a modern i7 last time I checked. Though the 950 that's currently installed is only worth $50-70.

    • @darkwaterblue
      @darkwaterblue 9 лет назад

      The hex core versions do go for allot though. Working 1366 boards also go for a fortune on eBay. Due to their complexity as you mentioned they do not seem to last, and are obviously not made any more.
      There is quite a community of us 1366 users who have moved onto the Xeon hex core chips that natively run in the 1366 boards and don't cost much. As servers reach end of life eBay gets flooded with hex core chips that drop straight into these.
      Great video, tbh!

    the 1366 was the enthusiast platform. Intel designed it to be the most overclock able chip you could get at the time and the one's who bought it overclocked the bageebaz out of them. They also got PSU's in the 1000w range and just drank the watt's like there was no tomorrow...not vary power efficient at all unlike the modern cpu's are and you don't need a 1000+ watt psu. But I am wondering what on earth you do for a living..you seem to know quite a bit about systems and networking...

    Have you ever mounted the cpu cooler to your new board yet? When I mounted mine I just put a little piece of electrical tape and punched out the holes in it so it wouldn't scratch the tracers on the board. Currently I just use these small plastic washers that I picked up from the hardware store, I think I picked them up in electrical, might of been where the screws and that are in the store not sure.

  • @robertbuilder5369

    I think it is the 2 power supplies that were causing the problems. The fact that the power supply was hot when you had it open and the fact that it goes off and comes on its own tells me that the over temperature circuit is tripping. The circuit in these is designed to operate at 0-40c and shutdown when it gets hot and turn on when it gets cooler automatically. Regarding the fans were they venting air in or out? Seeing as this videos is from july I am thinking that the ambient air temp being blown into the case was enough to trip the circuit.

    • @Maxxarcade
      @Maxxarcade  9 лет назад

      The fans blow out. Case temps were cool. It would often shut down from a cold boot before windows even loaded, so I doubt the power supply was too hot by then. Though some of the later shut downs could have certainly been the PSU overheating.
      The 2nd power supply was brand new, and the problem persisted. The one with the faulty fan was the first one.

    My bit on the Intel vs. AMD debate in the comments.
    AMDs current lineup isn't strong and the high-end x86 desktop space is certainly owned by Intel (high-end starting with 6C/12T Haswell, IMO).
    AMD *will not* recover from their current situation, you *will not* see another Athlon 64/K8 success and you *will not* see AMDs x86 desktop market share grow. AMD could build another brilliant core like K8 but it would never get the sales recognition it deserves in the x86 market. Intel got what they wanted, they're completely in control of the x86 market.
    If you, like me, hate the idea of a future dictated by Intel, I'd support anything but Intel and, where possible, shift away from x86 entirely. Continued support of Windows on x86 will only perpetuate this very situation. I understand that some uses, like gaming, are unlikely to move away from x86 though.
    People often complain about AMD as though they have a responsibility to compete. Why? Shouldn't that frustration be directed at WIntel itself? Microsoft's NT kernel was intended to be portable with .NET making apps "write once run anywhere" (just a compile away from support MIPS, Power etc.). Excellent... until Microsoft conveniently dropped support for anything but x86. That key decision in history started the chain of events that led to the current dire situation (that and the original IBM PC spec in the first place!)
    Over the next few years, as we see the emergence of many innovative companies making ARM chips for servers, please really consider it. The ARM market is level playing field with both established companies and innovative startups. You've got Qualcomm, Broadcom, Marvell, Applied Micro, AMD, Calxeda, Cavium, HiSilicon etc. all working towards AArch64 for server. It's massively important that the ARM market grows if we're to ever see a challenger to Intel.
    I will personally make the switch to ARM ASAP. I'm already converted to Linux, all the applications I care about are available for AArch32/64. The day I can say "good riddance" to x86 I will. For desktop/home server, the best hope today would be Opteron Axxx board availability to general consumers in 2015. It's already possible to avoid x86 for notebooks thanks to ARM Chromebook's (e.g. Exynos 5xxx, Tegra K1)

    • @Maxxarcade
      @Maxxarcade  9 лет назад +1

      The thing I'm starting to notice, is that the desktop x86 market seems to really be fueled by gamers. Everywhere I look for benchmarks, 90% are based on game performance. And the fact that Intel is so big now, is the reason they can get away with such high prices.
      I'd really love to see some more competition for Windows. Linux has its markets, but I think it would be even cooler to run Android on a desktop. There are so many apps available for it now, that it could actually become practical.
      I still remember the HP servers running HP-UX on PA-RISC CPU's. My biggest machine was only 4x 200Mhz CPU's, with 1GB RAM. The entire storage array was only about 73GB. But it still ran up until the day I sold it.

    Maxxarcade I had a thought, you might spray some contact cleaner on the socket and to a q-tip and clean the pads on the I7 itself. There might be some oxidation of the "fingers" in the socket causing intermittent contact to the CPU pads. I have done this with AMD cpu's to fix non booting issues.

Don't remember what channels were used as I have ALL slots used now, 6 - 8 gig sticks.

      WRONG. Here are 4 brand new socket 775 motherboards for sale at newegg (Check other retailers as well): www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100007627%20600007879
      They don't make many 775 motherboards anymore but they still do make some, They don't make any 1366 new ones from what I can find.

      They sell them but dont make them, trust me i deal with computers for a living and i know what im talking about when i say its outdated tech, long gone.

      So do I, Computer manufacturers still manufacture them. The manufacturing date on a recent 775 new motherboard I bought was 09/14. I registered it for a warranty. It is old tech BUT there is still a demand and yes, soon they will stop being made.
      I have a Q9650 for my media center and it runs everything fine including BF3 with a gtx 750ti.

      could be a few things like having alot of dust in your heatsink also try going to bios and see what fan profiles make sure that the cpu connector is in the cpu dedicated cpu header on the mobo

    • @Maxxarcade
      @Maxxarcade  9 лет назад

      I encoded it at 28mbps 1080p MKV, and it was a 5.9GB file LOL. I think RUclips re-encodes it anyway though.

    • @TheDanielHolt
      @TheDanielHolt 9 лет назад

      Maxxarcade It's encoded at 60fps but you're not recording at 60fps, soeh

    • @Dan-TechAndMusic
      @Dan-TechAndMusic 9 лет назад

      ***** Yup. I think you shouldn't encode as 60FPS if you really don't record in it, Maxxarcade. It runs slower for some people, and if it's not actually 60FPS, why even bother. And RUclips has no option for 1080p30/720p30 if the video is in 60FPS, which is stupid IMO.

      There was no preset in my editor for 30fps that worked with my hardware encoder. I'll see if I can make a custom profile next time.

      Maxxarcade it plays at 32fps then after 15 seconds or so it start dropping frames at 70+ at a time and other windows open with a video playing will start doing it too till I close this video.
      The controls are delayed also.
      I tried other 1080p and even 1440p with no issues.
      For some reason this video makes flash player puke.
