I like the theory that the Batponies are descendants of the Pegasi who didn't migrate during the Windigo ice age and that was why they went to the caves.
Bat ponies are so popular within the fandom partly BECAUSE there's so little official content featuring them (the other part is that they really are just badass lol). It's basically a playground for headcanons and fan stories.
I'm kind of surprised that the semi-cannon explanation was omitted . There is Lore of the Bat-Ponies in the books. In the "Princess Luna and The Festival of the Winter Moon", there it says, bat ponies are real, they live in the mountains and had a conflict with the mountain dragons. The tow guards that pulled Luna's chariot have names. They are Echo and Nocturne, and they are kind of silly. Bat Ponies do no see very well in the Sunlight. I mean I don't fault you for not knowing this, as you said, you are not reading the books. But I'm surprised no one in your server even mentioned that one. Headcannon here - but Flutterbat was caused by a spell that changes INSTINCT of a creature - so why did fluttershy BODY changed? Also hypnotic gaze like the Stare that lil Flutters have is indeed one of the powers that vampires usually posses Red Eyes and Fangs are other things that Fluttershy can manifest even outside that one episode
Ironically enough, from what little of what we know season 2 of ‘make your mark’ would’ve been. It was implied they would’ve developed the bat ponies more there.

Nice! In my headcanon, the Bat Ponies are more agile but slower than the Pegasus because bats have very flexible wings that allow them to make rapid adjustments during flight
The comics revealed the bat ponies are actual tribe, and the two bat ponies that Luna has is actually that biologically. Also, I forgot the name of one of them, but the others name is echo. They have names.
My theory for the bat ponies in nightmare moon's guard is that the helmet is designed to give the appearance of the bat eyes, and the wings? Armour. Not quite an illusion spell, just uniform. The ear tufts is like a concious choice for them as a sort of style, like a hair cut or something. Then again, I've read like 2 of the books (specifically Celestia and Luna's), and in Luna's, if I remember correctly, it's simply stated that she sorted out a problem in their coloney in the mountains, and the two guards that pull her carraige are two who basically gave themselves in service to her as gratitude so I've just always accepted that explaination😅 so if we're gonna work with that, my theory evolves to 'Nightmare Moon went and got the Bat Pony colony to become her soldiers, and for regular ponies made them wear armour to also appear as bat ponies, the only difference being the ear tufts'
my version for bat ponies in my foe story is that grogar took dead pegasi and fused them with vampire bats (and a few fruit bat by mistake) creating a new tribe specifically to terrorize ponies. eventually luna liberated them and the bat ponies made her their ruler.
I'd theorize that during Luna's corruption into Nightmare Moon, she forcibly transformed day guards into bat ponies as her own would-be night guards, which her plan was cut short after her banishment. It would explain why there are so few bat guards that we ever see besides in the alternate timeline of her ruling.
One possibility is that the batponies are pegasi who were willingly transformed by Luna. That would explain how Rainbow became one in that alternate timeline. (I made this comment halfway through the video, before he mentioned the idea that they were artificially created.)
Actually BatPonys are in fact there own tribe in one of the collectable comicbooks that gives details about the princesses in Luna's comic book she saved A tribe of BatPonys from A group of dragons that were threatening the BatPonys that lived there and rescued the 2 BatPonys that were pulling her carriage in Luna Eclipsed with these two BatPonies names being echo and nocturne when they got rescued by Luna from A rogue dragon then after Luna saved them they vowed to serve Luna forevermore And that's the origin of BatPonies! 😅😅😂😂🤣🤣💞💕❤️🤩🥰😍😍💘💝💖💗💓💕♥️

The reason Kirin in MLP look the way they do is because they're not DIRECTLY based on the quirin/kirin creature of Chinese legend. The actual mythology creature is way different, it's like an ox....deer....dragon thing. The Kirin in MLP are instead based on the NICKNAME of quirin, the "Chinese unicorn". That's why they were added to the show in the first place. They wanted another mythological pony type, like a pegasus or a unicorn. Quirin really aren't that, they're not really horse creatures per say. But they are CALLED Chinese unicorns, and from that the showmakers essentially tried to make an oriental version of MLP unicorns, which only vaguely had traits of actual quirin, like the scales. They even added in a yin-yang theme for good measure.
I have an interesting headcanon that batponies actually evolved from earth ponies, and convergently evolved features similar to pegasi . Sort of like how bats convergently evolved powered flight from birds.

I thought that Nightmare Moon's guards weren't real batponies or at least not all of them. Their wings looked stiff/fake. They couldn't fold them and they lacked ear fluff :3 Also about the eye thing: I guess that their helmets got magical equivalent of night vision googles

I somehow came across this, realized that this show has the lore of Lord of the Rings and the design of a modern little girls show, and then for some reason came up with a theory that Celestia is some communist monarch (or dictator) who I guess got tired of sharing power and then pulled some schemes to make her younger sister go mad so she can send throw her off the planet going 1/3 the speed of light into the moon so she can get 1000 years to basically have all the control half of the world until like 990 years later where after some blue kid accidently causes a shockwave around the kingdom, some purple unicorn managed to harness her true potential and then Celestia thinks to herself "yup, your gonna be the next dictator" and then proceeds to put said unicorn under her care. 10 years later she decides to tell the purple unicorn (her name is twilight because conveniently that name means between day and night) to go find some slaves (who conveniently happen to be the other 5 ponies affected by the rainbow shockwave) so they can act as like guardians of the kingdom and after they make Luna not evil using the "power of friendship" although that power may actually be coming from the fact that they were affected by a rainbow shockwave ohmygofod, they managed to prove themsleves worthy nd after a season long party, they then sent to do stuff for people, act as a morale boost, fight any threats that Celestia is too lazy to fight against, and eventually after preventing a global superpower from collapsing to 3 goobers with the power of the ENTIRE POPULATION OF ALL LIFE ON EQUESTRIA, Twilight eventually gets to take the role as the new Dictator so Celestia and her none the wiser sister can leave the lobby. Im guessing Celestia's expectations was that her kingdom was gonna collapse shortly after Twilight took power but instead Twilight became a much better leader than Celestia thought and I guess Celestia didn't really care about the outcome of literally the global population helping her out, as long as she got to retire. I also feel like this was planned ahead way earlier than I thought because before Twilight and the other 5 proved their worth, Celestia had another peer who was given godhood permissions and that peer happened to be TWILIGHTS OLDER SISTER. also why Cadence became an alicorn is unknown but its probably because Seltzer probably also planned to revive an old ally who was also partially forgotten and Cadence having mastered the magic of love, something the crystal empire is known for, or she also was a descendant of some of the few crystal ponies who survived their kingdom's collapse, was perfect for the job. ok im going to bed
It's possible that the Bat Pony guards and Flutterbat are something like in the same genius and/or species just different breeds? I mean some of the guards COULD be actual Bat Ponies like if Celestia's guards are also illusions at least some would be actual white stallions? Luna or Nightmare Moon might've found some Bat Ponies or had created them but from a different bat than Flutterbat? Also she could have trained them which could explain why Fluttershy was so chaotic and bloodthirsty
my personal headcanon is that bat ponies are basically pegasi but nocturnal. they serve the same purpose as pegasi, just at night. how else would weather happen at night? we don't see them because, well, they're nocturnal. they have echolocation, night vision and can fly silently. they're primarily frugivores but will also eat insects, with some even sipping blood from certain animals. luna even has bat ponies carrying what is essentially a kind of omni-vaccine in their bodies, so they can inject it into those they bite whenever they take a bit of blood from an animal they bite.

I don't now if you know about it but there's this game called Hearts of Iron 4 and one of if not the best mod for it is Equestria at War. If you play as Equestria there is a whole "questline" so to speak about mending the rift between bat ponies and regular ponies. If you succeed you can have the bat ponies integrated into society but if you fail you can have Luna descend into Nightmare Moon and plunge Equestria into a civil war with a bat pony nation that's on Zebrica joining in. It is a heartfelt passion project by mlp fans and I'd recommend watching some videos about it
Honestly could have made use of Fluttershy in the finale. Have the Mane 6 get their magic taken by the bell, result in her bat side taking over again. We SAW her tooth was still pointy at the end of the episode she became part bat. And since bats aren't magical in the show... She'd still be able to fly. Imagine the Mean 3 trying to stop her and she just avoids the blasts, and maybe in this form... This time... She can talk, but it's more like when she was inverted by discord in his first appearence. Or just monotone. The mean 3 succeeding in blasting her with the bell again, thinking some magic was left only for her to get up undeterred.. Freaking them out, especially Cozy glow *Reveal she had a batphobia* While she distracted them the Windegos manage to attack them from behind, causing them to drop the bell.
Hii this might be a little long and all over the place but I thought I'd give my AU for mlp, as I'm trying to work on make a whole rewrite of the show in comic form ':3 Also sorry if things don't make sense I suck at talking :p So the Bat Pony's were made by Nightmare moon. When she did her whole "the night will last forever" bit she needed minions to lead and help her take over the world, so she cast a spell on a LOT of Earth, Unicorn, and Pegasi to make her creatures of the night. When she was eventually defeated the "mind control" and most of the transformation was taken with her, but it left the pony's horribly disfigured and basically made 3 new subspecies of pony all with new magic. These include; Bat Pony WIP: Pegasi thats bird like features twisted into a more bat like one, giving them a long tail and big wings to help them fly. Multicorns WIP: Unicorn's that has a chance to be born with horns on any place along their head and spine, they can still preform magic but is just a LOT more difficult. Termers WIP: Earth pony's thats front hooves were changed into large claws for digging, with a more dog like appearance. Due to Nightmare Moon creating them to do her bidding a lot of other pony's were very distrusting and downright cruel to them, this caused them to hide away in the base of mountain deep in Forrest. As they were rejected by their families, but they all work together as one big colony making new houses and trying they're best to live with their curse. And thats basically all I have, I have a plan where the main 6 have to go to one of these colonies to cure fluttershy of her vampire cruse and I want to give each species different illusion magic they can do to hide themselves from the world. Like Bats doing auditory illusions, Multicorns doing Visual ones, and the termers doing physical.
A headcanon I have that is somewhat based on the “Princess Luna and The Festival of the Winter Moon” is that after Luna’s entrapment, the Batponies swore off communication with others for banishing their Princess and stayed in the mountains, and when Luna did return, Batponies like Echo and Nocturn became apart of her Night Guard.
There's book mentioning bat ponies (mention of two bat stallions becoming Luna's guards) and they also appeared in comics (very briefly in the background, not much oof). It explained that they did originate from caves, so in a way their theory is close to canon? Kind of
This is crazy. Yesterday my sister and I were talking about the oc she asked me to make for her, and lots of inspiration is the bat pony's! edit, I'd like to clarify that the character she asked me to make isn't a bat pony, we're just drawing inspiration from them.
A personal headcanon of mine is that Fluttershy is a distant descendant of a batpony somewhere down the family tree, which is why it was possible for her to even obtain bat-like characteristics in the first place. I don't think Flutterbat was merely a fluke, there just had to be something to awaken those traits within her. The ending of the episode "Bats!" hints that, despite clearly reversing the "fluke", she still maintained some bat elements. I think that, somewhere down the line, the Shy family probably has a batpony ancestor and that those genes were accidentally awakened within Fluttershy and, despite her psychologically recovering and rejecting primal bat instincts, the awakening of those genes is irrevisible.
I mean i don't know what you mean by Kirins being a mix of pony and dragon. Kirins are Kirins. A creature from southeast Asian mythology. The kirins in MLP are based off of the Japanese variant of the creature, that depicts them as deer with dragon features and backwards curved horns.

I might be misremembering but I remember an official comic where Luna found them in the mountains and saved them from something or something like that...? Again I might be crazy. We know through the Luna chapter book that bat ponies are a canon pony race that exists. _Long text ahead:_ There are two kinds of bat ponies; the turned ones (Flutterbat) and the natural ones (Luna's guards). The former make an appearance in the comics, when the Mane Six turn into bat ponies. It's specifically a magical form, only somewhat related to the real bat ponies via some characteristics. The latter get lore in the chapter book "Princess Luna and the Festival of the Winter Moon", which establishes the fact that bat ponies do indeed exist as an actual race; they live in the caves within the mountains of Equestria. Initially, they were feuding over territory with a dragon - but after Luna cleared up their conflict, they swore loyalty to her, becoming her guard. It also establishes that the names of Luna's guards in the episode are "Echo" and "Nocturn". As far as I'm aware, the Chapter Books are all canon - I don't remember them being contradicted in the show, and they're written by G.M. Berrow, who was involved in writing for the show since season 5 of G4 up until G5's "Make Your Mark" stuff. With Rainbow Dash, I'd argue that it was just her and other non-bat pony subordinates that were given armor to make them look more bat pony-ish. Nightmare Moon rules that Equestria and evidently wants some uniformity - everyone wears the same armor, has the buzz-cut, it's all in her colors, etc.. It'd make sense that she would want someone as fast as Rainbow Dash in her army, but she would be given an armor to fit in with the other, proper bat ponies. It's also possible that the helmet specifically gives her enhanced night-vision.
My fannon about the bat ponies: During the first heartswarming when the creatures (i wont say the name for respect) were causing the winter, a group of pegasi saw that staying in the clouds would not work and that if they went underground, they could ATLEAST have hard shelter and most probably a decent water supply (underground caves can have water pockets) so then theyd only have to worry about food. While most pegisi chose to stay in the sky due to not wanting to get any closer to the other ponies, very few chose to secretely fly down and find a deep cave that met their basic requirements. They found the perfect cave and stayed down there, either eating bats (which would cause sharper canine teeth to grow) or learn how to regrow the few plants in the cave. However, unlike the 3 main species, they were never aware of if the cold was over or not- they had no way to tell if the creatures had gone so thats why no one really saw them up until recently. Maybe Nightmare Moon found them once she returned or maybe they just noticed something felt off. Anyway, thats my lore for the bat ponies! Ik the comics have an official one but ivcant be asked to go find it 😂

They had no need of fire (undergroubd temperature is stable, fish=sushi);, so no need of wood or sunlight. -> Their Elemental magic let them make clouds from stalactite water droplets for building nests & basic furniture. | . Im pretty sure I read somewhere that Lunas gaurds that are carrying her carriage do have lore. Idr where I read it or where it said they have lore tho(I think it had to do with Luna saving them or sum? idk.) Correct me if I'm wrong cuz Im not sure where I found that info

I'm kind of surprised that the semi-cannon explanation was omitted . There is Lore of the Bat-Ponies in the books. In the "Princess Luna and The Festival of the Winter Moon", there it says, bat ponies are real, they live in the mountains and had a conflict with the mountain dragons. The tow guards that pulled Luna's chariot have names. They are Echo and Nocturne, and they are kind of silly. Bat Ponies do no see very well in the Sunlight.
I mean I don't fault you for not knowing this, as you said, you are not reading the books. But I'm surprised no one in your server even mentioned that one.

Headcannon here - but Flutterbat was caused by a spell that changes INSTINCT of a creature - so why did fluttershy BODY changed?
Also hypnotic gaze like the Stare that lil Flutters have is indeed one of the powers that vampires usually posses

It seems that Bat ponies were meant to be real according to both Lauren Faust and M. A. Larson. I wrote up a Bat pony homebrew for the Tails of Equestria TTRPG (and later adapted it for Renegade Game's My Little Pony Roleplaying Game):

They typically have gray coats, black wings and dark-colored manes and tails, though other coat and mane colors do occur. It's true that Bat ponies have fangs, mostly used for sucking the juice out of fruits--a favorite being mangoes. Treat as Truesight against invisible creatures: You automatically succeed at tests to see invisible creatures who have an Invisibility talent die equal or lower than your Echolocation talent die, e.g. a creature with Echolocation (D6) always succeeds against a creature using Invisibility (D6), but against a creature with Invisibility (D8) she would have to roll as normal.

In my headcanon, the Bat Ponies are more agile but slower than the Pegasus because bats have very flexible wings that allow them to make rapid adjustments during flight

The comics revealed the bat ponies are actual tribe, and the two bat ponies that Luna has is actually that biologically. Also, I forgot the name of one of them, but the others name is echo. They have names.
My theory for the bat ponies in nightmare moon's guard is that the helmet is designed to give the appearance of the bat eyes, and the wings? Armour. Not quite an illusion spell, just uniform. The ear tufts is like a concious choice for them as a sort of style, like a hair cut or something. Then again, I've read like 2 of the books (specifically Celestia and Luna's), and in Luna's, if I remember correctly, it's simply stated that she sorted out a problem in their coloney in the mountains, and the two guards that pull her carraige are two who basically gave themselves in service to her as gratitude so I've just always accepted that explaination😅 so if we're gonna work with that, my theory evolves to 'Nightmare Moon went and got the Bat Pony colony to become her soldiers, and for regular ponies made them wear armour to also appear as bat ponies, the only difference being the ear tufts'
my version for bat ponies in my foe story is that grogar took dead pegasi and fused them with vampire bats (and a few fruit bat by mistake) creating a new tribe specifically to terrorize ponies. eventually luna liberated them and the bat ponies made her their ruler.
I'd theorize that during Luna's corruption into Nightmare Moon, she forcibly transformed day guards into bat ponies as her own would-be night guards, which her plan was cut short after her banishment. It would explain why there are so few bat guards that we ever see besides in the alternate timeline of her ruling.
This brings me so back. I used to have so many bat pony OCs, I honestly forgot how little of them was in the show
One possibility is that the batponies are pegasi who were willingly transformed by Luna. That would explain how Rainbow became one in that alternate timeline.

Actually BatPonys are in fact there own tribe in one of the collectable comicbooks that gives details about the princesses in Luna's comic book she saved A tribe of BatPonys from A group of dragons that were threatening the BatPonys that lived there and rescued the 2 BatPonys that were pulling her carriage in Luna Eclipsed with these two BatPonies names being echo and nocturne when they got rescued by Luna from A rogue dragon then after Luna saved them they vowed to serve Luna forevermore And that's the origin of BatPonies! 😅😅😂😂🤣🤣💞💕❤️🤩🥰😍😍💘💝💖💗💓💕♥️

My theory
Here are some of my theories about bat ponies in My Little Pony:
1. Lunar Enchantment Origin
Bat ponies could have been ordinary ponies who were transformed by Princess Luna using magic during her time as Nightmare Moon. This would explain their nocturnal nature and bat-like traits, as well as their loyalty to Luna.
2. Genetic Divergence
Bat ponies might be a subspecies of ponies, similar to how unicorns, pegasi, and earth ponies differ. They could have evolved in caves or other dark environments, leading to traits like tufted ears, sharp eyes, and bat-like wings.
3. Guardians of the Night
Bat ponies may have been created or selected to serve as the royal guards for Princess Luna during her reign. Their unique features could have been granted by magic to make them better suited for night watch and flight in the dark.
4. Connection to Thestrals
Bat ponies could be linked to Thestrals from the Harry Potter series, representing creatures tied to the mysterious and unseen. They might have spiritual connections to guiding lost souls or being protectors of the unseen world in Equestria.
5. Lunar Energy Sustenance

The reason Kirin in MLP look the way they do is because they're not DIRECTLY based on the quirin/kirin creature of Chinese legend. The actual mythology creature is way different, it's like an ox....deer....dragon thing. The Kirin in MLP are instead based on the NICKNAME of quirin, the "Chinese unicorn". That's why they were added to the show in the first place. They wanted another mythological pony type, like a pegasus or a unicorn. Quirin really aren't that, they're not really horse creatures per say. But they are CALLED Chinese unicorns, and from that the showmakers essentially tried to make an oriental version of MLP unicorns, which only vaguely had traits of actual quirin, like the scales. They even added in a yin-yang theme for good measure.
I have an interesting headcanon that batponies actually evolved from earth ponies, and convergently evolved features similar to pegasi . Sort of like how bats convergently evolved powered flight from birds.
If Hasbro execs had one iota of competence they would make a new generation of MLP prominently featuring batponies or kirins.

Due to the rarity of their type, I think it's more likely the bat pony trait would be a recessive gene (as in you would need to receive a bat pony gene from EACH parent in order for that trait to be expressed). Therefore, a bat pony and a pure unicorn/pegasus/earth pony could never produce a bat pony, but the offspring would carry a recessive bat pony gene.
In later generations, however, there would be a 25% chance of bat pony offspring between other pony types if both parents carried a recessive bat pony gene (ex., a Ub and a Pb could produce UP, Ub, Pb, or bb, but only the bb combination would result in a bat pony). There would also be a 50% chance of bat pony offspring between bat ponies and other types carrying a recessive bat pony gene, but these pairings would be almost nonexistent because they would often be related.
Due to the generational delay of recessive genes being expressed, it would be natural for the first generation to assume that artificially produced bat pony traits simply cannot be passed down (with no bat pony x bat pony pairings due to rules against workplace relationships). By the time they reappeared, Princess Luna may have already been banished. Thus, there might have been a stigma associated with these "children of the night", causing them to be hidden away or socially isolated.
If this was the case, Princess Luna and these new bat ponies would have been a natural match for each other upon her return, both having been separated from pony society for a thousand years.
Bat ponies appeared for a few seconds and in those few seconds became fandom favorites.
Result Fandom had lots of fun with them creating cool OCs with thier own stories even a a comic series adapting to a night on Devianart

I somehow came across this, realized that this show has the lore of Lord of the Rings and the design of a modern little girls show, and then for some reason came up with a theory that Celestia is some communist monarch (or dictator) who I guess got tired of sharing power and then pulled some schemes to make her younger sister go mad so she can send throw her off the planet going 1/3 the speed of light into the moon so she can get 1000 years to basically have all the control half of the world until like 990 years later where after some blue kid accidently causes a shockwave around the kingdom, some purple unicorn managed to harness her true potential and then Celestia thinks to herself "yup, your gonna be the next dictator" and then proceeds to put said unicorn under her care. 10 years later she decides to tell the purple unicorn (her name is twilight because conveniently that name means between day and night) to go find some slaves (who conveniently happen to be the other 5 ponies affected by the rainbow shockwave) so they can act as like guardians of the kingdom and after they make Luna not evil using the "power of friendship" although that power may actually be coming from the fact that they were affected by a rainbow shockwave ohmygofod, they managed to prove themsleves worthy nd after a season long party, they then sent to do stuff for people, act as a morale boost, fight any threats that Celestia is too lazy to fight against, and eventually after preventing a global superpower from collapsing to 3 goobers with the power of the ENTIRE POPULATION OF ALL LIFE ON EQUESTRIA, Twilight eventually gets to take the role as the new Dictator so Celestia and her none the wiser sister can leave the lobby. Im guessing Celestia's expectations was that her kingdom was gonna collapse shortly after Twilight took power but instead Twilight became a much better leader than Celestia thought and I guess Celestia didn't really care about the outcome of literally the global population helping her out, as long as she got to retire. I also feel like this was planned ahead way earlier than I thought because before Twilight and the other 5 proved their worth, Celestia had another peer who was given godhood permissions and that peer happened to be TWILIGHTS OLDER SISTER. also why Cadence became an alicorn is unknown but its probably because Seltzer probably also planned to revive an old ally who was also partially forgotten and Cadence having mastered the magic of love, something the crystal empire is known for, or she also was a descendant of some of the few crystal ponies who survived their kingdom's collapse, was perfect for the job. ok im going to bed
It's possible that the Bat Pony guards and Flutterbat are something like in the same genius and/or species just different breeds? I mean some of the guards COULD be actual Bat Ponies like if Celestia's guards are also illusions at least some would be actual white stallions? Luna or Nightmare Moon might've found some Bat Ponies or had created them but from a different bat than Flutterbat? Also she could have trained them which could explain why Fluttershy was so chaotic and bloodthirsty

my personal headcanon is that bat ponies are basically pegasi but nocturnal. they serve the same purpose as pegasi, just at night. how else would weather happen at night? we don't see them because, well, they're nocturnal.
they have echolocation, night vision and can fly silently. they're primarily frugivores but will also eat insects, with some even sipping blood from certain animals. luna even has bat ponies carrying what is essentially a kind of omni-vaccine in their bodies, so they can inject it into those they bite whenever they take a bit of blood from an animal they bite.
New people are gonna watch this video and think that's all there is to bat ponies. Completely missing statements from the show staff about them...

I don't now if you know about it but there's this game called Hearts of Iron 4 and one of if not the best mod for it is Equestria at War. If you play as Equestria there is a whole "questline" so to speak about mending the rift between bat ponies and regular ponies. If you succeed you can have the bat ponies integrated into society but if you fail you can have Luna descend into Nightmare Moon and plunge Equestria into a civil war with a bat pony nation that's on Zebrica joining in. It is a heartfelt passion project by mlp fans and I'd recommend watching some videos about it

Hii this might be a little long and all over the place but I thought I'd give my AU for mlp, as I'm trying to work on make a whole rewrite of the show in comic form ':3 Also sorry if things don't make sense I suck at talking :p
So the Bat Pony's were made by Nightmare moon. When she did her whole "the night will last forever" bit she needed minions to lead and help her take over the world, so she cast a spell on a LOT of Earth, Unicorn, and Pegasi to make her creatures of the night. When she was eventually defeated the "mind control" and most of the transformation was taken with her, but it left the pony's horribly disfigured and basically made 3 new subspecies of pony all with new magic. These include;
Bat Pony WIP: Pegasi thats bird like features twisted into a more bat like one, giving them a long tail and big wings to help them fly.
Multicorns WIP: Unicorn's that has a chance to be born with horns on any place along their head and spine, they can still preform magic but is just a LOT more difficult.
Termers WIP: Earth pony's thats front hooves were changed into large claws for digging, with a more dog like appearance.
Due to Nightmare Moon creating them to do her bidding a lot of other pony's were very distrusting and downright cruel to them, this caused them to hide away in the base of mountain deep in Forrest. As they were rejected by their families, but they all work together as one big colony making new houses and trying they're best to live with their curse.
And thats basically all I have, I have a plan where the main 6 have to go to one of these colonies to cure fluttershy of her vampire cruse and I want to give each species different illusion magic they can do to hide themselves from the world. Like Bats doing auditory illusions, Multicorns doing Visual ones, and the termers doing physical.
A headcanon I have that is somewhat based on the “Princess Luna and The Festival of the Winter Moon” is that after Luna’s entrapment, the Batponies swore off communication with others for banishing their Princess and stayed in the mountains, and when Luna did return, Batponies like Echo and Nocturn became apart of her Night Guard.
There's book mentioning bat ponies (mention of two bat stallions becoming Luna's guards) and they also appeared in comics (very briefly in the background, not much oof). It explained that they did originate from caves, so in a way their theory is close to canon? Kind of

edit, I'd like to clarify that the character she asked me to make isn't a bat pony, we're just drawing inspiration from them.
A personal headcanon of mine is that Fluttershy is a distant descendant of a batpony somewhere down the family tree, which is why it was possible for her to even obtain bat-like characteristics in the first place. I don't think Flutterbat was merely a fluke, there just had to be something to awaken those traits within her. The ending of the episode "Bats!" hints that, despite clearly reversing the "fluke", she still maintained some bat elements. I think that, somewhere down the line, the Shy family probably has a batpony ancestor and that those genes were accidentally awakened within Fluttershy and, despite her psychologically recovering and rejecting primal bat instincts, the awakening of those genes is irrevisible.

I mean i don't know what you mean by Kirins being a mix of pony and dragon. Kirins are Kirins. A creature from southeast Asian mythology. The kirins in MLP are based off of the Japanese variant of the creature, that depicts them as deer with dragon features and backwards curved horns.

There are two kinds of bat ponies; the turned ones (Flutterbat) and the natural ones (Luna's guards).
The former make an appearance in the comics, when the Mane Six turn into bat ponies. It's specifically a magical form, only somewhat related to the real bat ponies via some characteristics.
The latter get lore in the chapter book "Princess Luna and the Festival of the Winter Moon", which establishes the fact that bat ponies do indeed exist as an actual race; they live in the caves within the mountains of Equestria. Initially, they were feuding over territory with a dragon - but after Luna cleared up their conflict, they swore loyalty to her, becoming her guard. It also establishes that the names of Luna's guards in the episode are "Echo" and "Nocturn".
As far as I'm aware, the Chapter Books are all canon - I don't remember them being contradicted in the show, and they're written by G.M. Berrow, who was involved in writing for the show since season 5 of G4 up until G5's "Make Your Mark" stuff.
With Rainbow Dash, I'd argue that it was just her and other non-bat pony subordinates that were given armor to make them look more bat pony-ish. Nightmare Moon rules that Equestria and evidently wants some uniformity - everyone wears the same armor, has the buzz-cut, it's all in her colors, etc.. It'd make sense that she would want someone as fast as Rainbow Dash in her army, but she would be given an armor to fit in with the other, proper bat ponies. It's also possible that the helmet specifically gives her enhanced night-vision.
My fannon about the bat ponies:
During the first heartswarming when the creatures (i wont say the name for respect) were causing the winter, a group of pegasi saw that staying in the clouds would not work and that if they went underground, they could ATLEAST have hard shelter and most probably a decent water supply (underground caves can have water pockets) so then theyd only have to worry about food. While most pegisi chose to stay in the sky due to not wanting to get any closer to the other ponies, very few chose to secretely fly down and find a deep cave that met their basic requirements. They found the perfect cave and stayed down there, either eating bats (which would cause sharper canine teeth to grow) or learn how to regrow the few plants in the cave. However, unlike the 3 main species, they were never aware of if the cold was over or not- they had no way to tell if the creatures had gone so thats why no one really saw them up until recently. Maybe Nightmare Moon found them once she returned or maybe they just noticed something felt off. Anyway, thats my lore for the bat ponies! Ik the comics have an official one but ivcant be asked to go find it 😂

. Pegasi are already a chimera (equine+bird); in the same sense that griffons (bird+feline).
-> In both cases, the "bird" part gives them the ability to bith fly & eat meat (without getting sick or suffering malnutrition).

. The "cavernous" pegasi survived by eating fish (meat) from the underground rivers (connected to mountain rivers on the surface that end on lakes/ocean); as well as liquen & fungi (growing from bacteria that leeches minerals for micronutrients).
-> Adding bats is similar to hyppogriffs adding "equine" (merging parts with feline); but in this case the "bat" merged with the "bird".

Also: ; She will keep secret their tribe on the condition that foals will be educated on the current customs of Equestria (by the returning batponies that finish their "military service" as their guards); so the "next generation" may have the option to "deal" with the rest of the World in their own terms.
