    I have aquirered a decent size collection of planes. The only one of these three I have “so fare” is the plow plane and dang it's versital. Love it.

    Just as an aside, the small plow is actually a very capable rabbet plane; you have it as ‘no’ on your chart. That’s one of the reasons you can go up to a 1” cutter. Just my 2¢

      I 100% agree, I talk about that a bit. The ones in yellow are like maybe but I took these stats off of the Lee Valley website and they say no hahaha

    I have the l and r small plow, combination, and 55. I do very little beading, fluting and reeding, but that said I would think the fluting blades only need a single skate to support them in the middle, while the beading blades want a skate on either point.

    • @BatCaveCreations

      Thank you!!! I have the beading irons (borrowed lol) so imma try them out on both. Maybe that would make a good short video or something lol

      Hi there. I wonder if you have already purchased the Veritas combination plane. If you did buy, how do you like it and what did you used it for? Thanks in advance. Looking forward to to your feedback. Le

    Hey Jamie, just wanted to say thanks as always for the amazing content, I was literally just trying to find the differences between the three on Friday and could not find anything other than the Lee valley product videos.
    I also just subscribed to the $20 Patreon, and hopefully sometime this coming week I'll get around to making a discord account (I have no idea what it even is other than some social media platform lol), but honestly even without the ability to interact on discord, your channel has taught me so much and is so worth supporting. So thank you again!

      Hey!! I am so happy this helped!
      Thank you for joining our Patrion and for your support! Discord is basically like big chat rooms that have different channels or different topics. Trust me, it was a learning curve for me, but I've really been enjoying it.
      Since you are a Parton, you can ask for exclusive videos too, so if there is more you wanna know about something, just let me know! And thank you again!!

    Thanks Jamie for doing these videos! You are one of the few people focusing on hand planes and hand tools. I think the chart was helpful in this video because of the various blades and accessories available for these planes. I have all three of these planes. I know. Overkill. I just got the box maker and haven’t done much with it yet. I’ve done several grooves with the plow plane. I done grooves and reeding with the combination plane. I hope to use all three a lot in the future!

      @BatCaveCreations  Год назад

      Thank you!! I appreciate that!!
      I think it is cool you have all three, tbh i want all three so i dont have to constantly be setting up the same plane. The box makers you can set for drawer bottoms and leave it. the plow for beading, reading, ect. the combo for t&g something like that. im lazy when it comes to set up so thats ideal for me hahah

    Great video and I like the comparison table!
    I've now used the combination plane for creating rebates and grooves on a few projects and find it an excellent, versatile tool. You do not need to buy many blades for it unless you want the profiled cutters. I find myself just using the 1/4" blade for most operations and doing a few passes to get the desired width. It is easy to work through the timber, does not clog and you can sneak up on the fits nicely.
    My 2x criticisms of the unit are that
    1. The nickers for cross grain cutting seem to get damaged very easily being very thin sheet. I'm trying to look after them but still the tips seem to get bent or broken.
    2. The depth feet are very small which means you can end up tilting the plane in the cut I'd not careful. I'd prefer longer, more stable ones.
    Look forward to your detailed videos on these tools!

    Useful comparison. The charm of the box makers plane is simplicity. The charm of the combination plane is the Swiss army knife utility and like the knife it's bulky, and the tool's functions can seem like a gimmick.

      Haha I 100% agree

    • @Northowlwoodwork

      @John Northowl I was more thinking about reeding and fluting functions. Grooving, rebates and dadoes are great with a combination plane.

    I haven't found the need (yet) for a longer reach with the Small Plow Plane, but I do have the optional longer 6" fence rails for the Skew Rabbet Plane that look like they should also fit on the Small Plow Plane. These longer rods would then increase the reach by about an additional 2-1/2". Interesting to learn that their new Box Makers Plow Plane has a longer reach than the larger Small Plow Plane.

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  Год назад +1

      Thank you for adding! That's good to know!
      Ya it's deff odd that it has more reach than the small plow. Idk why it needs that reach tho tbh 😆 🤣

    • @corwind3888
      @corwind3888 Год назад

      @@BatCaveCreations I don't see the need for more reach either, however it does allow for the addition of a wooden sub-fence without any sacrifice. What I find odd is that the optional 6" rods are offered for the Skew Rabbet, yet not for the Small Plow.

    • @BatCaveCreations

    Great video thanks. Just wanted to comment on the box maker's plane's ability to cut rabbets. From the Veritas video it describes a small recess in the subfence that allows it: ruclips.net/video/eVz_clPHido/видео.htmlsi=weTZ6sl5UMXl4qHn&t=47

    Good idea on the new format, but you should try to integrate spell check into it. Reading involves a book while reeding requires a stick of wood. Groves are groups of trees while grooves are channels cut into wood, but not necessarily through a grove. There's one more, but I'll let you look for that. All kidding aside, congrats on showing some initiative and shaking things up. If you've never worked with a Stanley model 55, it leaves all three of the Veritas in the dust

    i have the small plow and the box makers planes. irons from both the record 050 and stanley 45/50 will fit them both. with the record irons, they are too short for the depth adjust and the notch is on the wrong side for the right hand plow. the stanley irons fit but the depth adjust has to be threaded almost to the end of the threaded rod to work.
