Now that I’ve seen this - I think I may buy the new version of the veritas and the tay tools to compare. My only hold up on the veritas is that it takes two hands to adjust. I also want to name the discomfort of the tay tools feeling like a rip off of the titemark design. Ever since the Katz Moses router plane came out, this has been something that I try to be a little more mindful of.
How do others feel about this? Laissez-faire or support the original designer?

That was something I wanted to comment on in the video but didn't want to start a war. Lol The taytools is a straight up knock off cheep clone of the tite-mark and I don't like that and don't want to support that. (The other reason I didn't wanna buy new lol)
I am completely against current makers cloning current makers. Esp when they have it all made in China.
Cloning and upgrading vintage makers, those that don't make anymore, that's completely diff imo.
@@BatCaveCreations if we’re gonna start a war, might as well be a big one. Woodriver - essentially the same improvements to the bedrock design as lie Nielsen, but made in china with cheaper quality materials here and there?

Thats why i bought me a Yoselin wheel marking gauge. Came with locking & spinning wheel, carpenter pencil, and Dove tail jig. All for $21.00
I have the Veritas single guage Micro adjust and love it for all the reasons you gave Jamie. As an economical Yankee, I will add that the price of it was just right for the task…..money left over for my Boston Baked beans, hot dogs and corn bread….. eat your hearts out!

Very nice review. I have the Tite-Mark.
I'm buying the Veritas. I like how it doesn't roll off the table. Very unique design. The weight of the head on the Tite-Mark seems a little heavy to me and a little out of balance. It's a great marking gauge as well though. They both mark an accurate line. But I agree Jamie, $130......it's no Lie- Neilson.

Jamie...I have the Tite Mark and it is well engineered. On your recommendation I bought the Veritas. I love the design of the Veritas, but the workmanship is poor. The micro adjustment is really rough even when I hit it with PB blaster and tried to work with it. ( Yes the tightening knob was backed off) Just a really rough piece. But I only paid $58 for it so I guess you get what you pay for. More testing tomorrow. I want to love this thing, but can't so far.
That's very odd, mine works great! Did you get rhe one with the adjustment on the end?
@@BatCaveCreations Yes. Micro adjustment. It's like the threads are stripped. It's kind of an all around rough piece. I love the design and feel over the Tite-Mark though.
@brhino1017 you may wanna return that for a diff one I'm using mine right now for a TON of dovetails and it has no issue :/

Good video, I have both the veritas and the tite mark. I like the tite mark much better. Tough I also have a cheaper veritas, without the micro adjust, as well as the taytools one. The 2 I grab the most are the non micro adjust veritas and the tite mark. My reasoning is the veritas without the micro adjust is fast and easy to use and the tite mark I have my 1/4 inch double cutter on it. I like the 2 headed cutter, I find it more convenient when laying out a mortise. And the vast majority of things I work with are 3/4 in at least 1 piece.
I do prefer a head heavy marking guage, I find it easier to mark with,, it is more resistant to outside movement, eg it has more inertia.

fwiw, i had the taytools version and had to toss it aside because, under normal pressure and/or over the course of marking several boards, the head can slide along the rod gradually, causing you to lose the right measurement -- even with the thumb screws tightened all the way. i attribute this to my forefinger knuckle rolling along the knurled microadjuster while marking boards, so it might just be the way i handle the tool. however, i recently i had a chance to play with a titemark version, and the gauge will not move once the thumb screws are tightented. not even when i tried REALLY hard to make it move. in any event, the taytools gauge led to finding out too late that all my lines were not the same, and i've had to recut joinery. total bummer. so yeah, there's definitely a quality difference that goes along with the price.
that said, i never bought a tite-mark. i wanted a gauge with the microadjust at the bottom of the rod (and out of the way of my fingers) so ultimately went for the oblong veritas microadjust.
I have heard the same thing about the taytools and the wood river. It's a shame but I guess it is what it is! I like the micro at the end of the rod too, I also feel it's out of the way and more comfortable without it right there where ur hand goes.
I have the Veritas micro adjust gauge and like you couldn't get it to micro-adjust. But I never micro-adjust anyway. Perhaps I should do it more when finding centres for resawing boards.
I really only use micro adjust when I'm having an off day and things just aren't lining up haha or... when I adjust like a gorilla hahaha
You should check out Hamilton Toolworks, they have beautiful handmade marking gauges in different woods that are BAT like!
YES! my buddy just showed me those the other day! I deff want to get one and see if he can make it in Bocote! they are 100% BAT like :D
I have the simpler Veritas. I actually disagree and can recommend it. The adjustment is OK for me. However, I bought the other Veritas as a present for a friend and I agree: this one is superior. The big plus in my opinion is the exentric rod. With mine I have to be very careful that it does not roll off the table. The adjustment is better as well, but no a huge deal.

The non micro one? I sold that one and got the double. Used that for a long time and now this micro to add to the pot ahha
@@BatCaveCreations yes, i bought it a loooooooong time ago when it first came out. my very elderly brass and rosewood antique is easier to use!

I have the title mark. I do not like their micro adjust feature. I am getting the moving cutter Veritas.
$130 for a marking doesn't work for me at all.

The adjustment on the veritas is very simple...looks like you are doing it wrong. Over $100 for a marking gauge is what is wrong with boutique tools today. No issues what so ever with the Veritas.
How do you adjust the ring spin one? I tried it for a while :(

@@BatCaveCreations Difficult to explain I had the same issues but was eventually shown by staff at a Lee Valley store. It does move the reference surface still, but have never had an issue creeping up on a cut. The micro adjust is great - I've recently purchased. I have all 3 in your video and they are all great in their own way.

Buy the jessem , it's far superior to them all .
The price is better than the Tite-Mark but I still struggle with paying that much for a marking gauge :(
