    I'm taking a look at the Veritas Box-Maker's Plow Plane, doing a features overview, deep dive, review, and comparing it to the Record 043.
    The Boxmaker's plow plane is is a miniature plow plane that is great for box or drawer bottoms, box lids, small beads, and anything else where a small groove is needed.

    I was considering a plow plane but didn't want to go the eBay & clean up route when I came across your videos of this box-maker's plane. I watched them about a dozen times each and can't thank you enough! Now I'm on the hunt for replacement screws I can get locally for the fence adjustment. Thanks again for your excellent videos!

      You're welcome! Glad it was helpful 😊. I bought my screws from McMaster, so hopefully you can find something similar locally. It's a pretty nice upgrade in my opinion, well worth it.

    Very detailed overview. Playing the role of the manufacturer's rep was interesting perspective to include in the review. Avoids a poor quailty Zoom call too.

      haha thanks! A little slice of the old case review days... We had talked about doing a video call of some sort, but I figured by the time we coordinated that and the time spent on it, this was probably as good an approach as any, short of having them here to do it in person (not on my budget lol)

    Good review. The 043 can be used for beading if you file the skate. I’m not saying you should do it as it’s cast iron, not steel, ad won’t e as strong.
    Bu I did it to my 043 a few years ago and it works. I only filed the skate enough for 3/16” and 14” beads. The 1/8” size would have made the cas skate on thin.
    I used irons from a stanly #50 plane, which I hppn to have.

    I've used a Record 043 for several decades.
    I recently acquire the Veritas version w/all the irons,
    I like that all the screws use the same tool an Allen wrench. Having the rods attached to the fence improves parallelism. I like the improved ergonomics of the casting.
    I have not used the Veritas enough , yet, but I foresee it becoming my go-to.

    Would a same thickness shim work to position the one eighth and one sixteenth blade in place for the hold down screw to work?

    • @MosquitoMade
      @MosquitoMade  3 месяца назад

      Possibly, but I'm unsure if that would be strong enough to not bend, if it were thin enough to fit and hold tightly. Could be worth a shot though, since the Veritas irons are on the expensive side

  • @waynecox5138
    @waynecox5138 Год назад +1

    One thing I think Veritas should offer is a 7 or 8 slot plow plane cutter roll. Similar to the setup for the 044 cutters in concert. You organize left or right and imperial or metric. Or beading vs straight etc. these would fit in a box like yours.

    • @MosquitoMade
      @MosquitoMade  Год назад +1

      that would be kind of nice. I'm thinking about making a small box for this plane, including a sub-box for the plane irons; like a #45/55/all the rest

    Salve, complimenti per il video molto utile, volevo chiederti, secondo te e' normale che il ferro non sia affilato per niente quando arriva ? oppure non e' cosi importante che sia affilato come quello di una pialla . Grazie se mi vorrai rispondere. Ciao.

    • @MosquitoMade

      Non mi preoccuperei troppo che un ferro non sia affilato, poiché dovrai comunque essere in grado di affilarlo. Non riesco a pensare a nessuna pialla che abbia mai comprato nuova che non abbia comunque affilato prima di usarla. Speriamo che aiuti! Also there is a value proposition if you have their small plow and share cutters. Also they do make a tool roll for cutters.

    • @MosquitoMade
      @MosquitoMade  Год назад +1

      I think the value of shared irons with the small plow (as mentioned at the end) is a big help on the irons front. The cost of the irons almost doubles the package price otherwise... I might have to buy a small plow now too lol

      Can you use Stanley 45 irons? Is the notch the same? Great review. I have the 43 and use it alt. I love Veritas stuff, so I’ll probably end with it at some point.

    • @MosquitoMade
      @MosquitoMade  Год назад

      Yeah, in the section on irons I covered that the larger 45 irons fit the box makers plow plane, but for 1/8 and 3/16 they're too narrow. I would suspect the same lever cap part was used in the small plow, making the results the same on that one too. On the box makers plow the notch doesn't matter. I can check later if the notch is the same size, I don't have a small plow to test them in though

    I made more guides for my right and left handed Veritas skew block plane. It was no problem to make and match up to the tapped section of the fence (not the same but an analogous situation). Also - I dislike the brass thumb screws, I want the tool option. I DON’T like the thumb screws on their small plow plane (I grab a wrench to tighten them).

    • @MosquitoMade
      @MosquitoMade  4 месяца назад

      Understandable. I can always swap out to the stainless ones I have, which have a slotted head in them, or add a slot to my brass thumb screws too. For now, I get a good enough grip with these for me, though. I don't have any experience with the skew block plane, so I can't really speak to the fence, but at first glance they don't look the same. I'm guessing the fence screws in to the plane body, and then you have a collet type mechanism for tightening the fence to the rod? That's not how these work, unfortunately, or they'd be a lot easier to make.

    • @toddlarsen6215
      @toddlarsen6215 4 месяца назад

      @@MosquitoMade On the skew plane the actual wooden component of the fence screws into the metal fence. I made a new wooden component (at 17 degrees) and countersunk for the screws without issue. I didn’t find it difficult to line these up. I drilled a small pilot from the flat side and then drilled back with a tapered bit slightly wider than the screw (which gives a mm or so of slop to help alignment).

    • @MosquitoMade
      @MosquitoMade  4 месяца назад

      @@toddlarsen6215 Don't get me wrong, I fully understand how one would go about replacing the wood, but it's certainly not as simple as "I held it in place and drove a screw in", was the point

    I'm just wondering whether 'box making' might refer tio making box wood inserts for the tradtitional style wooden bodied profile planes. I can see how this plane could be excellent for making the rebates in profile plane bodies, and for fitting the wood inserts into those rebates. Both operations would probably have the workpiece held in a vice, so the fixed guide bars would then make sense. Replacing those box wood inserts is generally referred to as reboxing, so it's a mildly plausible theory? I can't imagine Veritas would market a tool for such a niche use, but it's kinda fun to wonder about the product name. Thank your for making this excellent review which is very well presented with really interesting content, only one glaringly obvious error, which was "I own a couple of 45s". A couple!?!? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    • @MosquitoMade
      @MosquitoMade  Год назад

      I own a couple and I curate a lot? 🤣. That would be interesting, I could see it doing a good job of cutting grooves and rabbets for boxing. It'd be easier holding things in a vise for sure

    I still dont understand even though I saw an explanation from Rob about why they made the rear fence rod hole tolerance so loose. None of their other roded planes that I own have slop so why did they intentionally introduce it here. I find it makes the plane feel cheap. Your review is fantastic btw. The long rods thing definitely seems a bit annoying for hold fasts and small parts. It might be a little gut-wrenching, but did you consider knocking an inch off with a hacksaw and some file cleanup? The small plow offset is up to 1 1/2" (compared to 2 1/2" on this) and I've never heard complaints about the small plow offset being too short. Alternatively, a really thick fence will alleviate that somewhat (but how far do you really wanna take that?)
    Absolutely loved the thoroughness of this review.
    I'm thinking that starting from scratch this is a great option that will work for a long time, at least until you find the need for a combination plane. The small plow has some nice little upgrades but becomes pretty redundant once you have a combination plane. This little guy is different enough from the combo to be a nice little "one-task tool" even after the combination plane is handling everything else for you.

    • @MosquitoMade
      @MosquitoMade  Год назад

      Thank you! I did ask Veritas if they had any plans of selling either short rods, or replacement rods, specifically for that reason (the answer was not at this time, but would consider if there was significant demand). The idea of a thicker fence isn't a bad one, and if I find it to be a significant issue for me, I might just go that route (but I would feel a little ridiculous with a 1-1/2" thick fence lol).
      I do think the box maker's plow plane is a great addition to a full combination plane. I agree with your assessment that the small plow has a lot more overlap with a combination plane than this one does. I also think the small has a pretty large overlap with this one as well. if I could only have one, maybe the small plow would be the answer, but I just love this form factor so much that I'd be more likely to have this and a larger combination plane, if that was my alternative

    Thanks for the comprehensive look at this plane! I'd really like to know if you were without any plow planes right now if this would be a candidate for your first one. It sounds like in comparison to the record 43 it's super reasonably priced, but it's hard to tell in comparison to a Stanley 45 (more expensive than this, bigger, likely needs restoration)

    • @MosquitoMade
      @MosquitoMade  Год назад +2

      Oooh good question. I think that depends on what type of work you do/want to do. I think it's a pretty good option if you plan to do more basic/smaller stuff. A Stanley #45 is a more capable tool than the Box Maker's Plow, or Record 043, but it's also a much larger plane (I would argue though, that if you got the box maker's plus all the irons for it, you could find a pretty nice #45 for $300).
      Personally, if I were buying my first combination plane right now, I would probably consider the Veritas small plow plane if I wanted new, or a Record 050 or later type Stanley #50 for vintage. I think they're a little more versatile than a box maker's plow plane, because they can user some wider irons fir bigger rabbets/grooves, and they can also do tongue and Groove (and a few other sizes of beads, flutes, and other such specialty irons)
