How to get a FAT DRUM KIT sound - Update #8 of "How to reach your drum sound"

- Tuning is tonic on the top and minor third above on the resonant -
Here's a video about how to get a fat drum sound. Very dark, beefy, this kind of sound is more for a groove purpose rather then a fast and busy playing.
Drum kit non-vintage with which you can get a similar sound:
Ludwig legacy - C&C drums player date big band outfit (with reverse bearing edges)
Sonor Vintage series
Gretsch Broadkaster (the new replica)
yourdrumsound
I love the detail you give about the kit, you don't find many people that give all that information when focusing on things like tuning or heads
Thanks David! I try to give as more significant details as possible.

This is my favorite drum sound of all time. Thanks for this video!
Adrian Sympson thanks!
Dave
This is my favorite drum sound. Love the tone. Thanks for the detailed information.
How big do you want your hi hats : Yes
Killer man. The kit sounds great, love the bass and snare. First video . I am new subscriber
Hello from the Netherlands. Fat drums rock!
I think that kind of setup works pretty well if you're playing led zeppelin since bonzo used a 14x10 rack tom and a 16x18 floor tom on his setup. He did enjoy that 70's thump/boom sound
Dude! Those toms sound killer! Adn the bass sounds beefy. The sounds that I really love!
Thanks bro u respond to our requests ........once again thanks
Nice to see you back , cool video !
Thanks Man! It's a pleasure!
Dave
Love the drum sound!
Great!!!!! Please, keep going. Finally a groove and sound oriented drummer with beautiful drums. I myself have a 66' Slingerland in 13/16/20 and it is always a pleasure to see other drummers out there with the same taste of gear! Hope to see some more videos in future.
Eddy Sonnenschein Eddy Sonnenschein thanks Eddy! My videos and my project "yourdrumsound" are focused on sound, not on my skills. Slingerland was my first love, those 2 company (ludwig and slingerland) were very similar to each other. My preferred kit is a radioking from 40s, exquisite sounding drums!
Dave
Hey Eddy! Thanks, I enjoy a lot experimenting with sounds. It's what keeps me "up and running"
Dave
Thanks for sharing. Love the kick and tom sounds.
*Bro I thank you very much for an Idea to SIMPLY CREATE MY OWN BACKING TRACK on my e-drums ! Have a nice times*
😁🤟🖤
Now thats a fat sound! Great video
Good drum selection, nice playing, killer drum sound specially the floor tom, SUSCRIBED.
Thanks Jorge!
Dave

Adam Emelio thanks Adam! Sharing my videos and my Facebook page with your friends will help me a lot!
Thanks
Dave
Wonderful vids my man, keep it up!
Thank you!
Dave
You gained yourself a sub!
Bass, how LOW 🔉can you go?! The 14” and 18” toms sound classic and awesome 👏🏻 ! They need to be paired with a 26” kick drum. Thanks for the vintage kit info. 👍🏻
Here he pairs them with a 26", I think it's the same toms, or at least almost identical. Sounds MONSTER!! :)

Holy douche man, I loved this. Really awesome sound! :D
Jeffrey Middelveld thanks Jeffrey!!
Dave
A-MA-ZING sound!!
Thanks!
Dave
great insight! very helpful. :)
Thanks Bobi!
Dave
that drums sound amazing...
but still i hate the sound of ufip cymbals. a bit to dry and very less brightness
MrSawlong thanks! I choose these cymbals just becouse of that sound which I like for that purpose. I also have Class series Heavy crashes and Bionic for more high pitch or aggressivenes.
Dave
3:50 you can use this sound, but then you need other microphones, and better to microphones, add triggers
Unfortunately you didn't actually tell us how you tuned the heads?
Cool beans! I definitely prefer the "wet fart" sound coming from the drums instead of the pants
Sounds really cool! What gear did you use to record this (converters, preamps, mics, compressors, etc)? Also, is there any muffling on the toms, doesn't look like it. Thanks!
sounds goregous cnice channel bro !!!
Great!!!
Great sound. But why is the picture distorted sometimes? Does the camera not like the sound? ;-)
Hi! The camera was shaking due to the vibrations that came from the bass drum and floor tom. I couldn't do nothing to fix it..
Dave
Thanks Dave. I guess you could try to move the camera further away from the drums?
I don't have so much room in my home studio.. I'll try a different stand to isolate from ground shaking.
Dave
Don't worry about it...Drums are thundering, it adds character to the videos!
Oliver Nacinovic eheheh thanks Oliver! You're so kind.
Dave
Dry fat 70's sound!
Man, that video makes we wanna recut my bearing edges to 30 degree roundover 🙈
Hey Florian! There are different things involved, but the bearing edge is one of the top 3.
Each drum has its own character, get a vintage kit if you like this kind of sound, you'll have a lot of fun and great vibes!
Dave
Hey Dave, speaking of vintage drums - Do you know a place to get good vintage drums in Italy, Switzerland or even Germany? I don't seem to find anything in Europe like Maxwell Drums in NYC, for example.
Hey Florian! Maxwell is like the "reference point" for vintage stuff. Vintage drums are mostly american, so finding a well-stocked store in Europe it's a bit tough.
Mostly the market is growing through the web. In Italy there's "il Garage di Asso" in Rome, the guy is called Roberto, a great dude!!
Don't know any other store except for a few in the UK that you can find through FB or Google.
Dave
S U P E R ......
You didn't mention the dappening
No dampening was added, just 1/3 of gel just to to control a bit the overtones.
A presto
Davide
Can you show me how to achieve a fat kick drum sound? i can do it on software but would love to see how the pro's do it.
Hi Michael! You need a big kick drum (like 24x16) with Powerstroke 3 batter and resonant. Then the mics and the ambient does the rest
Does it have to be tuned very low as well?
Not too low or you'll hear the beater attack followed by a "thump".
I always wanted to know why back in the 80's when playback was used on tv shows like Solid Gold that the kick drum on a song would sound fatter than usual but im guessing it could have been due to the size of the studio. I accidentally found out how to recreate that fat kick drum sound.
Sounds great... What about the Capelle Turbo? Thank you.
Jens Hindelang Hi! What’s capelle turbo?
Capelle was a Drum Luthier from France. The Turbo Line was built in The early 80s. I got a Shellset for little money just for fun, Bubinga Shell. It contains a 22x32" Bassdrum, 18X16" Floor, 14x13"... Nuff said.... Couldn't figure out how to tune it, but i think it would suit perfect for your Idea of "Fat sound".. .. Great and Thanx for the inspiration Ciao Grazie PS:www.pearldrummersforum.com/showthread.php?84077-CAPELLE-Turbo-drums
Jens Hindelang cool! Didn’t know about this company. I used to have an extra deep bass drum (22x22) but it didn’t sound as I expected. I’ve experienced that big drums but shallow work better.
Thanks
Dave
Let's hear what will happen with this "little" beast. Thinking about purchasing your DvD. Thanks alot and keep on the great work. Your Chanel and how you approach drum/sound is great.
I really appreciate!
Thanks Jens
Dave
where is the link for fat snare? cant find
AKA AKA look for “fat dead snare sound”
I have a 12 rack and a 16 floor tom. Should I get a 14 or 18 floor Tom? I play rock
12 & 16 won't sound and feel like 14 & 18. If you need more thump and a lower fundamental go for them!
Dave
@@yourdrumsound so go with an 18 lol?
When does he actually explain how to get this sound? I'm trying to tune my Gretsch Tom and floor tom to this sound
Hi, the sound is a blend of drum choice, drum sizes, drum heads and tuning.
The drums are well explained in the video, while the tom tuning is a minor 3rd. Tonic on the top and minor third above on the resonant.
Dave
@@yourdrumsound hey man thanks for the speedy response. My comment was a bit rude so sorry. It's cause my buddy and I were looking for a quick video and got frustrated haha. Thing is I'm a guitar guy that recently invested in my own drum set. So I'm really new to tuning them to get a certain sound. I know the sound I want is this one though. But I'm sorry to say I don't know what you're talking about when youre explaining the tuning pitch.
@@deedeekreep9139 Hi! There're not specific note on the drums as on guitars, mostly a drummer tune up to his taste and what the music "ask".
There are different kind of drums for different style and music genre.. just like guitars!
It takes time to learn how to do it and I can't do it in a comment for sure... but don't stop trying!.
Dave
@@yourdrumsound yeah sorta figured that out yesterday by just saying fuck it and tuning them myself without video instructions. Just one question though is it bad to tune the toms down to much? Cause that's what I've been doing to try to get this sound. It's close but it feels like any lower and the drumhead would be to loose.
Great sound! I bought the same Slingerland 40's Radio King drums.
Do you use damping material inside the bass drum?
Christiaan Bruin great choice! Radiokings is one of the best kit I've ever played!
Yes, I use a little bit of dampening material inside the bass drum. Even with non-ported heads I used to lay a towel inside the bass drum to break the sound waves and avoid that annoying "flanger" effect.
Dave
Thanks Dave! Keep up the good work.
One more quick question: how do you tune the toms? Any advice on the relationship between batter head and reso head's pitch?
Christiaan Bruin I'll try to be short in my reply.. I like first of all tune with the same pitch, but generally I don't like "floppy" heads since the shell doesn't sing and the drums are less musical and sensitive. If I want a drum to be more "alive" I tune the reso head tighter, while to get a lover pitch just take the reso a step lower. One last thing: little tweaks makes big difference, so proceed with small steps.
Hope that help!
Dave
Awesome, thanks!
Davide
How n the fuck do you make your drums sound like that brother? Dammit.
One of the easiest most unremarkable drum sounds to achieve. It still has a lot of musical value to it, it is just super boring and very easy to get just buy double ply coated heads for the tops and 1 ply or 2 ply coated heads for the bottoms and tune both sides on the low side.
very mick fleetwood
what mics are u using?

YES!

My expensive 14s sound like your hats
the snare is?
Ludwig supraphonic Aluminum LM400 14x5
Your Drum Sound you think brass is mire “fat”? Or not?
Luca Di Pan brass has more attack, it’s a material with a great projection and tone balance. Aluminum is kind of “dull” in some way, and mellower.
Your Drum Sound what s the name of this 70’s ludwig? And slingerland?
Luca Di Pan Slingerland radioking and Ludwig superclassic
Drum fantastic, cymbals (Ufip) no good my friend....
It’s a matter of tastes...
Nice drums, cool chops. Not a fan of the "fat" sound. Just my humble opinion. But that sound reminds me of disco. Yuck!! Very dead!!
Gorgeous drum sound even though the guy obviously ain’t no drummer.
stfu kid, He is teaching something,he can't show skills, and for the few grooves he did , he did them so well,
you say the 14 is a rack tom , how you holding it up?
waqqodonkey by its braket or on a snare stand. In this case it's a snare stand.
Dave
Phatttt
Nice drums, terrible sound. They all sound dead. Real flat, no resonance. To each thier own.
Frank Thank you for sharing what is your opinion and your point of view.
This is a sound that is been around for decades and obviously it’s not for “all purpose”, but it turns out that these days this sound is back once again and it’s really on demand.
Personally I don’t play my drums with this tuning but if a producer or a song writer ask for that 70s “thump” I can do it.
It’s all a matter of tastes.
Dave
@@yourdrumsound Hey Dave, thanks for the response. That sounds been around for a long time. Very true. I want to say it was very prevalent in the disco era. I'm not a big fan of disco either. Application is the key word. If that's what you're getting paid to do then so be it. Have a great day!
