How to get a FAT DRUM KIT sound - Update #8 of "How to reach your drum sound"

  • Tuning is tonic on the top and minor third above on the resonant -
    Here's a video about how to get a fat drum sound. Very dark, beefy, this kind of sound is more for a groove purpose rather then a fast and busy playing.
    Drum kit non-vintage with which you can get a similar sound:
    Ludwig legacy - C&C drums player date big band outfit (with reverse bearing edges)
    Sonor Vintage series
    Gretsch Broadkaster (the new replica)

      Mostly the market is growing through the web. In Italy there's "il Garage di Asso" in Rome, the guy is called Roberto, a great dude!!

    • @yourdrumsound
      @yourdrumsound  7 лет назад

    • @jaggass
      @jaggass 7 лет назад

      Does it have to be tuned very low as well?

      I always wanted to know why back in the 80's when playback was used on tv shows like Solid Gold that the kick drum on a song would sound fatter than usual but im guessing it could have been due to the size of the studio. I accidentally found out how to recreate that fat kick drum sound.

    • @yourdrumsound
      @yourdrumsound  5 лет назад +1

      Hi, the sound is a blend of drum choice, drum sizes, drum heads and tuning.
      The drums are well explained in the video, while the tom tuning is a minor 3rd. Tonic on the top and minor third above on the resonant.

Cause that's what I've been doing to try to get this sound. It's close but it feels like any lower and the drumhead would be to loose.

    • @yourdrumsound
      @yourdrumsound  7 лет назад +1

      Christiaan Bruin great choice! Radiokings is one of the best kit I've ever played!
      Yes, I use a little bit of dampening material inside the bass drum. Even with non-ported heads I used to lay a towel inside the bass drum to break the sound waves and avoid that annoying "flanger" effect.

      One more quick question: how do you tune the toms? Any advice on the relationship between batter head and reso head's pitch?

    • @yourdrumsound
      @yourdrumsound  7 лет назад +1

      Christiaan Bruin I'll try to be short in my reply.. I like first of all tune with the same pitch, but generally I don't like "floppy" heads since the shell doesn't sing and the drums are less musical and sensitive. If I want a drum to be more "alive" I tune the reso head tighter, while to get a lover pitch just take the reso a step lower. One last thing: little tweaks makes big difference, so proceed with small steps.
      Hope that help!

    Ho un timpano ddrum da 18x16 che non riesco mai a far suonare decentemente. Se lo accordo basso, la nota è troppo lunga. Ma al contrario se volessi poca coda sono obbligato ad accordarlo più alto ma perdo le basse frequenze. Hai dei suggerimenti? Come pelli ho emperor sabbiata battente e ambassador clear risonante.

    • @yourdrumsound
      @yourdrumsound  7 лет назад +1

      Ciao Mario, le pelli vanno benissimo, il tuo è un problema di risonanza.
      Accorda il timpano come più ti piace, poi prova a togliere prima uno o se necessario due dei piedini di gomma delle gambette del timpano e riprova. Scaricando più vibrazioni a terra (quindi togliendo l'isolamento della gomma) "asciugherai" la risonanza. Se devi ridurre drasticamente rovescia la gambetta (così avrai quasi 0 risonanza e spesso è un po troppo estrema come soluzione..) puoi anche provare a mettere il piedino di gomma sulla gambetta al rovescio per recuperare un po di risonanza.
      Anche la superficie su cui appoggi il timpano influisce. Se per esempio sei su di un palchetto rialzato vuoto sotto (tipo quelli che hanno sui palchi) avrai un po meno risonanza.
      Soluzione n°2 è mettere un batuffolo di cotone dentro al timpano, liberamente appoggiato sulla pelle risonante. Fungerà tipo da "gate" e fermerà un po di risonanza.
      Farò un video a breve su questo argomento.
      Spero possa esserti di aiuto.
