YOU can get a fat sound by tuning the reso head lower as well. It really depends how you want the drum to project. High reso tuning projects upwards. Low reso tuning projects outwards. The KEY to a punchy sound is the discrepancy between tensions. One has to be much looser than the other. The added resonance of a tighter bottom head will engage more snares, producing more of a crack, and the shorter sustain of a looser bottom head will produce more of a rounded shell sound, or 'pop'. Other factors include drum depth and snare strand width.
Amazing! ive been working on that tuning for a long time, i have heard and tried many of those techniques bt yours picked up the best from all worlds!! and without too much dampening so im for sure saving the video and triying it ASAP!! Thanks man!!
The last time I used taped on my snares resonance head and then try to remove it later attention was too much and it ripped the head at the edge. I think it was a Remo head, maybe it was already torn. But that method works great maybe the tape I used was just too sticky. But I'm watching your video now friend and thank you
Excellent video, my JJ signature snare sounds phat now. Just needed someone to explain tuning fast so I could get a result (unlike the overindulgence of other 20min tuning vids).
I watch the next video. However, the problem I have is getting the correct torque or tightness on the better head for a better sound without affecting the bounce of my drumsticks? I hope you resolve this in your next video. Sweetwater demonstrated the way to get both The phat Sound and keeping the tightness for a good bounce of the drumstick. Let's see if you have that in your next video. Thank you very much sir
The thing i love about this sound is the 80s vibes i get. If i remember correctly i believe this is the same sound i hear in metallicas ride the lightning (the song) not a big fan of lars though lol
I concur with your tuning technique. I have always done it pretty much the same way, except often I will loosen the two (2) lugs (on each side) which are closest to the snare wire beds (by about 3/4 of a rotation each), plus I don't dampen the resonant head. But, I play a lot of jazz/funk fusion so I like a bit more snare buzz in my sound. Your fat snare sounds good and meaty, man! Peace & love.
I really would have liked to hear it in the room that you're speaking in, rather than via close micing or processed. Not to dog you, but it's not really a representative sound if it's going through compression or noise gating or a mic in general. Hearing it from where the mic is located as you're speaking would have given us a better example of the sound.
Loved the video! Just a bit paculiar about a couple things. The laptop came out when you tested the snare and then you started using the tail end of the stick?
Followed all his directions with a regular coated snare head, couldn't get that sound. Used a hydraulic snare head and couldn't get that sound, ordered a p77 remo that was in the video and still could not get that sound. I give up. Damn lol
Hey there... I have a major problem and I'm hoping you can help. My snare wire doesent sit on the resonance head when the head is tightened table top tight, the wire is at least 1mm over the resonance head parallely not touching the head at any point. Alternatively it touches when tension rods near the throw off and butt plate are detune. Can you tell me why this happens and what should I be doing to correct this....
do you know around what frequency hz you tune the toms and kick to? i use a tune bot with a Mars crossover 5 with 18" kick 16", 14", and 12" toms and 14" snare. been trying forever to get a tunimg i am happy with and i love your setup tuning wise. please help me if you can. awesome video you have inspired me more than drum videos have lately and taught me a few lessons i will cherish for years to come. thank you so much.
+Jonathan Downey I don't know what frequency specifically. I did just release a whole course about tuning that you can check out on the website that I think would help you out! So glad you are enjoying the videos!
Your welcome I just pray when I start doing some next year I can reach my goal of getting at least one endorsement not for the free stuff but the accomplishments
I use pearl reference snare 14x6.5, can i have that big and fat sound? Because of the specs? I am planning to change my drumhead with Evans Hydraulic Black. My bottom snare use evans hz300 and puresound steel for the wire, thankyou
Can you recommend mics to use for Drum covers? I'm planning on uploading full instrumental (guitar, bass, drums) covers just me playing, but I'm struggling on picking what mic setup to use and editing programs! Help! Lol
I hope you all enjoyed the lesson!

Drum Beats Online any snare recommendations? What are you using?
I'm using a Ludwig Supraphonic. I absolutely love it.
What drum heads are you using on the snare?
Idk if that's my own problem or not? I clicked the link but when I click on "add it to cart" or "buy it now", nth happened lol.
Drum Beats Online Great Video! Could I get that sound out of a Ludwig Acrolite do you think? (6.5/14)
After doing two steps and experimenting with my snare wires, I finally found the sweet spot I was looking for. This was so helpful. Thank you.

I totally agree! Good thoughts.
gonna try that out now too
6.5 x 14 aluminum snare with 32 count snare wires. How do I tune to get that deeper thud sound?
The whole serie is super good for beginners. Thx for making it.
Absolutely! I'm so glad you are liking it!
Is that a p77??? Those things sound awesome tuned low, I've never seen it tuned like that. Everyone seems to crank those super high
Yeah they really are best used this way
+AJ Glick It is! I noticed that the p77 responds really well when tuned higher as well. But it does a pretty good job tuned low!
Drums and metal gear = perfection.
The videos are getting better and better!
+Niek de Vries I'm so glad you think so!
That snare sounds beautiful
I love the snare sound!!!
+Creeperbro Gaming days Glad you dig it!
this is so 80s, I love it.

I love that you started with the reso head and I am surprised you dampen the reso head, Ive never seen anyone do that 👌🏼
+Josh Columbus definitely one of the most important things for me!
Gives me 80's rock/glam metal vibes
Yes bro
I like the way you explain,it is good to understand for me too...thanks from germany
You got it dude. My snare sounds fantastic now. Thanks
For Evans 360 heads, tune it 1/8 of a turn more on each lug and put a moongel on it 👍
Thanks for responding! Great sounding snare with those tips, sounds really phat, punchy and thudy!
I like the snare drum sound you got in the end. I'll keep this video in mind when it comes time to record.
So glad you dig it!
I've always wondered what the matt garstka stack cymbals sound like on their own finnaly a (half) answer!
+TheZooNinjaS haha I'll be doing a review soon!
Ugh dude me too! Sometimes I can’t sleep at night because I can’t stop thinking about what the Matt Garstka stack sounds like.
Clear heads work best for me when trying to get a phat sound

I've always wanted to know how to get a Travis Barker's punchy snare sound on my snare drum.
Thank youu mann!!
awesome! I've tried so many videos but yours has really helped.
I'm so glad to hear that!

Another great video Gabe! Thanks for the tuning tips!
+Rich Eichelberg You got it Rich!
Good stuff man
If you're going to finger tighten 2 lugs across from each other at the same time using this same approach for tensioning/tuning also makes sense.
Really good video. The way you explain everything is simple and easy to understand. Subscribed!
I’m so happy to hear that! Welcome to the party!
Sounds very 80's.. cool!
Loving your trashy cymbals. Love the unpolished look that seems to be the thing at the moment.
Thanks! I’m loving them too!
Drum Beats Online I've taken to stacking crashes - good one on top of a smaller less expensive one. Great trashy effect with a fast decay.
The thing i love about this sound is the 80s vibes i get. If i remember correctly i believe this is the same sound i hear in metallicas ride the lightning (the song) not a big fan of lars though lol

Wow! I love that tone. Can’t wait try this!
+Steve Vorass I'm so happy you liked it!
I see that dirty piece of clear moon gel above the Remo logo @ 5:44 .....
What's that you say @ 5:53?
LOL
Thiscatsgotclaws 1:30
This head also has a lot of dampening naturally, it's thick, there's a ring and even a patch.
@@benferris1591 there he is talking about the reso head not the batter head
@@rohayek8492 5:53 "and what's really cool about this is that there is no dampening on the snare drum yet WHATSOEVER"
Thanks so much dude! I was searching for a video with this head for the snare, I use this head!
P77 is a killer head!
Dude you helped me sooooo much!! Love you😁😁
❤️❤️❤️
Great advice! Thank you
You’re welcome!
I want that tom and floor tom sound :'(
+Alexander Stefanovski Check out the course!
Really helped me thanks mate 😃
are you tuning the snare top the same as bottom of snare?
Good lesson, thank you. Just what i needed
I do it the same way. There's actually a "sweet spot" with the tension of the snare wires
Hi! Do you recommend any specific drum heads that will sound phat?
So useful
gonna try that tape on the res head, thanks!
Smart move! Glad you liked it!
Cool tip! can you do one with tuning a piccolo to sound good, I have had a hard time with mine at home. Rock on Gabe!
Is this tuning course still available and where do I go to find this course? I clicked on the link and it says not found
Thoughts on snare side 500?
Which resonant heads do you find are the best at achieving this sound?
+SwampWampa I think the Remo clear ambassador snare side is always a great place to start!
What crash are you using to your left next to high hat?
What snare are you using in this video? And for the reso head do we start with the lugs finger tighten?

Thank you for the video, cool tips, question: What snare are you using?
+payml you got it! I'm using a Ludwig Supraphonic.
Great tip man and amazing ending song which is it btw?
+robin kaushik It's a performance track called "Hey Now" that you can get on www.drumbeatsonline.com
Cool. Quality tips)
Glad you liked it!
I know this video is kind of old but to get the best sound, what heads do you recommend?
For the snare I always go for the Remo p77 or the Evans HD dry.
Love your hi hats! What are they?
15” Meinl Dual hats!

What's the starting point for tuning the resonant head lugs?
Stupid question, but, wouldn’t finger-tight tuning change depending on how strong you are?
Depending on your hand or finger strength, sure, but the difference there is going to be incredibly minimal.
It took awhile but I got it and is it weird that I’m still a kid and trying to get a really good sound 🤔
I have an e-kit, why am i here
how about using big fat snare drum?
is the reverb natural ?

What’s the point of reverb on the speaker
Hi Gabe, I came here from a video in collaboration with rdavid wondering what drumkit is that. I really like its sound
Welcome my friend! My drum kit is an Ayotte with a Ludwig supraphonic snare drum.
Drum Beats Online Thank you very much!
Hey do you think you could show us how you do the intro drum fill?
I already made a lesson for that! Check out the drum lessons playlist on my page!
I use pearl reference snare 14x6.5, can i have that big and fat sound? Because of the specs? I am planning to change my drumhead with Evans Hydraulic Black.
My bottom snare use evans hz300 and puresound steel for the wire, thankyou
Absolutely! Those are the same dimensions as the snare used in this video.
Just bought your course right now!! I'll be watching it for the new few days =)

When you tune the resonate head are you talking about 2 turns from finger tight?
Yup!
@@DrumBeatsOnline thanks my man ♥️
What heads are you using on your snare for this?
Remo P77
Sounds like the Master Of Puppets album snare.
What snare is this?
14x6.5 Ludwig Supraphonic
