Nathan, the manual transmission was not available with the 5.9 on the 1500 series trucks (i.e. Package 23A, 23G), which would explain why you only saw it on the 5.2 equipped trucks. The $1,745 option (per the window sticker that he kept) got you 275/70R17 Goodyear Wrangler GSA tires, 136 amp alternator, HD engine cooling, auxilary transmission cooler, transfer case and fuel tank skid plates, anti-spin differential, tow hooks, fog lamps, 4.10 gears, ~2" lift, and a trussed Dana 44 front axle. As much as I love my 2019 Rebel and it will probably outperform the 2001 in every way, I will always say his 2001 was my favorite truck.

I actually own one of these exact trucks (01 Ram 1500 with the Magnum V8 and the Sport Off-Road package). Oh boy is it something. The perfect contender for this series for sure (just good luck getting it home in one piece!)
Those off road edition rams are great trucks. I use have one. I kick myself in the butt for getting rid of it. That truck never let me down. Mods I did to the one I had were 4.56 gears 35 inch tires amd a mild cam. Was a blast to drive.
My brother has this same exact truck with the same paint fade too. Over 230,000 miles on it. We do work, hauling, hunt and still 4wheel it in Colorado in southwest lots of trails and mountains to explore. But it regularly maintained and still use stock parts.
PLEASE check the intake gasket. The Magnum series 318/360 engines are notorious for those going bad. A very easy way to check it, if the PCV system is OK, is to get it nice and warm, and with it idling, open the oil fill cap and put your hand over the oil fill. If there is vacuum, the barrel gasket on the bottom of the intake manifold has failed. I have had many of these in Dodge/Jeep products and it’s always overlooked. ALSO, front unit bearing assembly. If it has not been replaced, buy three, replace both, and keep the extra for a spare when one fails again.
I did exactly what you're doing here with a 2002 Sierra SLT Z71 Extended cab. Bought it with 169,000 miles in 2017 and it already had a Fabtech 6" lift, a SnugTop shell and 35'5 on it for roughly $5k. I put a couple grand into replacing wear items, a couple grand into the motor, new Bilstein shocks, re-geared it to 4.56, added fender flares and put wider tires on it with an E-Locker out back....it's been a daily ever since and it's bomb proof off-road. So much better than the new trucks and it hauls butt while getting 15mpg average.
This should be a good series. These don't need to be full-on projects, but hopefully the do mini mods--maybe a $1k budget each (or a $6,000ish total budget). For this one, a new dash, used tailgate, and a home respray.
Just replace the dash pad with one from LMC truck or Geno’s garage, you don’t need to get that plastic cover, the replacement dash pad is made out of superior materials.
I owned the same truck in Intense Blue Pearl. I special ordered back in September 2000. Loved the truck! Slapped some 285’s on it not long after I bought it. Rust on the bottom of the doors and broken dash was standard with those.
I have a 98 ram 1500 with the 5.2 magnum. Its been a good truck. Finally got around to fixing the minor body damage and painting it back in May of 2020. Replaced the factory steel 16" steel wheels with a set of 17" chrome and got a really good deal on a set of big ol Michelle's, kinda rough riding now as the tires are 10ply rated, lol.......rated to carry almost 3200 lbs each, bet I never overload it. Building a RV tow rig. Its coming along nicely......
I always really liked this 2nd generation Dodge Ram! I wanted to buy one new but couldn’t afford a new truck then. But these old trucks will run forever! They don’t last long in the rust belt though.
I have a 99 sport 4x4 with the 5.9, 146,000 miles. Has headers on it and a K&N air charger. I still love it. All besides the gas mileage. I get about 12 in town and 15 on the interstate. It regularly pulls a 16' stock trailer with 3 horses in it no problem.
I love this truck. Fix the brakes, cheap paint job, new head lamps, dual exhaust, and cover the dash. Bam, its ready. Oh, and take those goofy side steps off!
The brakes are not great even when they are perfect; the 2500 from 2000 had upgraded two piston calipers in front. The trans the famous 46re, if its not broken, it will be unless someone has already replaced it. Oh, and don't forget those corporate rear end weakness also.
5.9/360 Magnum was not available with a 5spd in a 1500. Also, looks like it's missing the factory tow hooks that came standard on Offroad Editions, I know a guy with some if that's one of three things you're looking to upgrade. Sport front ends demand a fairly high price, a good condition bumper/grille often goes for $600-$1000
I had a 1994 Laramie 5.9 360 Forest Green with silver on the lower rockers . That 360 sucks gas but runs forever! It will outlast the rest of the truck ! Mine went 600K miles before the body rusted away !
I have a 2001 dodge 2500 V10 Laramie and the dash is fine- the dash in my 1999 dodge 1500 5.9 L dash hasn’t cracked either, I’ve always kept it conditioned, and something over it.
LMC actually has full replacement dash pads now so you don't have to use the plastic covers. Have a plastic cover on my 97 and I hate it. Looking at switching it out fully soon.
I owned a 3d Gen Ram (2002) which carried over the same 5.9 V8. Not a bad engine, plenty of low end torque but runs out of breath on top quickly. Also,be prepared for frequent gas station visits; it gets around 11-12 mpg and that was in RWD trim. I would also expect AC (condensor) issues and front suspension problems (tie rods, front hubs, etc). Yea the dashboards disintegrate...this carried on to the 3d Gen Ram too.
I remember when those trucks first came out...... 4 inch lift on a factory half ton was awesome! Really low miles for its age it should be fairly problem free.
Love Kase, he is just so good on cam, sharp and speaks clearly with confidence and just knowing how these vehicles actually work is really a major plus. He is especially awesome at this sort of old fixer up stuff. I have seen some of Kase's and his Dad's projects on their family website Bad Betty garage builds. Very talented guys. Pebble beach. LOL That was good.
These are the holy Grail of second gen rams it comes with a coil lift 410: gear ratio trussed dana 44 front and lsd 9.25 rear axle, 17" rims, dual piston calipers, power steering cooler, external trans cooler, high volume oil pump all from the factory
I had a 2000 sport off road with the 5.2 I think it was. The smaller V8. Loved it. I was dumb and traded it. I wish I had it back. I had installed a high flow cat and a single flowmaster super 44 out the side in front of the rear tire. Super loud.
Michigan Dodge trucks are well ventilated. You can change the oil, change head gaskets, etc without opening the hood. Just reach through the abundant rust holes.
I have never had much luck polishing out headlights. Sure they can look decent again, but never seems to last. I would just change them out for new housings with new lenses just like Kase did on his truck. I would also upgrade the bulbs to LEDs while I was at it.

I have a sure grip in my Dakota and even with 230,000 miles it still spins both tires on dry pavement. In fact itll smoke em and leave hella stripes. Never been rebuilt.
270,000 on my 5.2. Other then the plenum gasket, the Magnum series were reliable. Not terribly powerful, but decent torque. End of the day it's just a small block 360 that has a little different oiling and intake bolts, plenty of parts out there to make more power.
I had the exact same truck but red. Loved that truck. Really not that old I still remember making my payments $550 a month witch seemed a lot for a 20 year old kid...
I had a 98 ram 1500 sport with the off-road model exactly like that with the factory lift but red. Loved it. It would go anywhere I pointed it. Had it for 7 year till the frame rotted out.

My brother has this same exact truck with the same paint fade too. Over 230,000 miles on it. We do work, hauling, hunt and still 4wheel it in Colorado in southwest lots of trails and mountains to explore. But it regularly maintained and still use stock parts.
Replace plenum gasket and do transmission band adjustment. Check pcm to see if truck has been death flashed. Great truck.
2nd gen dodge rams are my favorite. my dad has a 2001 cummins and it’s probably the most reliable truck he’s ever had
I have that exact same truck. I am the original owner and mine stills looks new. Looking forward to seeing your project get some love.
Look up a Rust-Oleum roll on paint job. You can paint the whole truck for $100-200 yourself.
They should just apply bed protection to the whole truck ! Lol 😂
Cool video. $20 bucks the transmission is slipping/not shifting through gears in under 5000 miles. Ask me how I know.
Just replace the dash pad with one from LMC truck or Geno’s garage, you don’t need to get that plastic cover, the replacement dash pad is made out of superior materials.
It is not ugly, it is a good truck, it just takes work and time to leave it in excellent condition.
They don’t last long in the rust belt though.
this series should be fun to watch!
Get rid of bed liner keep the chest it will help you on the trail cause ya know carry extra supplies
Great to see Nathan
You need to get the center console cup holders you can’t latch the console anymore and it’s 45$ but it’s a game changer!
The brakes are not great even when they are perfect; the 2500 from 2000 had upgraded two piston calipers in front. The trans the famous 46re, if its not broken, it will be unless someone has already replaced it. Oh, and don't forget those corporate rear end weakness also.
5.9 I love that engine
@CJ Malone you're a boat anchor
@CJ Malone ill take 5.9 over a ford 5.4 anyday..
@@workingshlub8861 5.4 pulls way better
@@SuperSurviver71 5.9 is easy to repair
@@SuperSurviver71 it pulled about the same
5.9/360 Magnum was not available with a 5spd in a 1500.
Also, looks like it's missing the factory tow hooks that came standard on Offroad Editions, I know a guy with some if that's one of three things you're looking to upgrade.
Sport front ends demand a fairly high price, a good condition bumper/grille often goes for $600-$1000
I love old trucks my daily driver is an 04 Silverado 1500 z71 not for sale my grandpa left it to me when he passed
When he took the dashboard cover out 🤣🤣🤣 i wasn't expecting that, but at the same time, i was expecting it
Lmao this man said don’t touch my truck or y’all getting busted knee caps 😂😂😂😂
I remember when that generation ram came out. It was a very bold design at the time. I still think they’re good looking trucks.
Great video guys!
I already know I am really going to enjoy this series.
Kase and Nathan are the new dynamic duo
LOL
That was good.
Headlights will polish up nice, and you have an aftermarket trans cooler.
I have never had much luck polishing out headlights.
Sure they can look decent again, but never seems to last.
I would just change them out for new housings with new lenses just like Kase did on his truck.
I would also upgrade the bulbs to LEDs while I was at it.
@@jdfleetguy28 Mother's mag wheel polish and a foam pad on a drill. Takes 10 min to do both. Very easy. A coat of wax on them every other month and they will last.
Headlights are cheap. Just replace for $60.
These trucks are classics. I had one with a 5speed... It was big, comfortable and a hoot to drive. Scared some people. Lol
I really love those second gens! Keep up the classic channel, it’s stirring my imagination.
Great video! Nathan and Case play well off of each other.
And thank you Nathan for saying those running boards need to go! At 6'10" I laugh at such things! Hahaha.
Case / Kase..... How do you spell your name?
The second one haha
The limited slip would essentially be an open diff by now. It would require full rebuild to be useful off road.
Um yours is a 318 cubic inch displacement engine
I had the exact same truck but red. Loved that truck. Really not that old I still remember making my payments $550 a month witch seemed a lot for a 20 year old kid...
Ah yes, another great series to look forward to!!! 😁
i had a 99 ram with the 5.9l and 4wd. It was a nice truck, despite the 5.9 it was slow and got terrible mileage but it was great offroad.
I had a 98 ram 1500 sport with the off-road model exactly like that with the factory lift but red. Loved it. It would go anywhere I pointed it. Had it for 7 year till the frame rotted out.
Please review the last generation of the Dodge Ram Van Wagons from 1994-2003. I really want you to review this truck and all the American Vans like the Ford Econoline that was sold as a van until 2014 and then they only sold it as a chassis that was updated from the interior in 2021 and also a good review of the Chevrolet Express which is the Last Classic American Van built on a frame.
Thanks The Fast Lane Truck & @TFLClasics.
This segment will be a great hit no doubt!
We have trucks that are maybe 3yrs old here that look 20 years old with the rust on them. That looks like new underneath. That 5.9 mag gets gallons per mile lol. The good ole days
My grandma had an 03 Durango with the 5.9. It was a tank. 235,000 miles
Race this against Kases truck!
Seeing this truck brings back memories in my grandpa’s 99 1500
I always liked these trucks. Last manufacturer and generation to use a solid front axle in a half ton.
$5000 USD!? For that price in Canada you can get all 3 of these plus give everyone $800 for mods. Hell for $5500 canadian I've purchased 05 Tacoma TRD/06 4runner SR5 combo deal. I honestly can't believe how crazy the used market is there! Either that or TFL just loves overpaying ...
agree same stuck 2wd would be $1000
I’ve been and owned all three 90s fords, Chevy and dodge. In my opinion chevy is the most reliable but dodge is the most fun by a lot.
yep. I'm personally a chevy guy, but those era dodges sounded super tough with an aftermarket muffler
90s Chevys are good. They’ve kind of sucked since then, but the GMT400 platform was great.
Chevy Silverado and Dodge Ram of these years are top dog and still see them on the roads today!
@@rickydavis5541 they are
I’ve owned 5 90s ram and only one of them has had under 200k, 2 of them diesels but one of the gassers I owned had almost 300k miles
Holy crap I had a 2001 dodge ram 1500 sport too with the 318. Same color and everything. Sadly rust ate it alive. But was still running with all the abuse it was put through. Tough truck. Some people will argue over the 318. But I think the 318 and 360 are the best engines dodge made. reliable, simple and made great torque. Just my opinion.
My father gave me one one of these but it was a 2wd with IFS. It got the 5.9 Magnum. That was a quick truck according to the ones I drove before.
Love my 2001 and Raptor lined it. Had to redo the headliner, headlights, and yes the dash was just like yours but the dash cover works great.
Picked up mine for 1500 bucks. Still running strong
I vote for offroad content and all 3 go up the ike with 7k pound trailer. Be awsome to see how old trucks compare to new ones.
Stoked about hell and back! Here for all of it!
Dude, that's so cool of them to sponsor a series like this! I look forward to it! Definitely gotta fix those brakes first though.
