- *Live coverage from day one of Jason Meade's trial has concluded. The first witnesses in the case are expected to be called to the stand Thursday morning.*
Opening statements by both the prosecution and the defense were delivered in court Wednesday morning.
Prosecuting attorney Gary Shroyer called the shooting "unjustified" and said that evidence will show Meade acted with intent, knowingly and recklessly causing the death of Goodson.
The prosecution revealed that Goodson's gun was found on the kitchen floor of the home near where he fell after he was shot. Shroyer said the gun’s safety button was on and that Goodson had a soft-sided holster without a strap in the front of his pants.
Goodson, according to the prosecution, was only carrying keys and a bag of Subway sandwiches and his back was to Meade at the time of the shooting.
“Six shots in the back, all fired by the defendant into the back of Casey Goodson with no reasonable basis for the defendant to perceive a threat by Casey,” Shroyer said. “It's an unjustified shooting.”

In the defense’s opening statement, attorney Kaitlyn Stephens said Goodson waved a gun, ran and pointed his weapon in the direction of Meade.
The defense stated evidence throughout the trial will show that Meade was not reckless in the shooting. Stephens argued Meade is trained to shoot until the threat is over and that he shot to stop the threat of an attack before the threat “attacked him.”
The defense also said Meade's gun was set on automatic and that Meade pulled the trigger once, firing six shots at Goodson.
“He continues to yell, ‘show me your hands’ before the suspect makes entry into that home,” Stephens said. “My client thought it was all over. My client thought he was going to surrender. In that split second, the suspect turns towards the officer, looks in Jason's direction as he lifts his hands up leveling the barrel of the gun toward my client and in that split second Jason steps to the left and fires.”
Jurors will visit the home of Goodson’s grandmother in the Linden neighborhood Wednesday afternoon to see the scene of the shooting. The purpose of the trip is to help the jury put into perspective the evidence that will be presented throughout the trial.
Attorneys on both sides will be in attendance but are not allowed to intervene in any way.

I was at the courthouse earlier today. In the same courthouse, there was an aggravated assault trial. That guy was so pissed and arguing about it in the hallway. It was in Chris’s courtroom, floor 3.

@sandman0022 How can you defend someone who took a person life without justification? His Dad has nothing to do with your argument. As far as Casey's record, it holds no weight. Casey should not have been killed based on assumptions an officer had. Like you think it's OK for this man to be dead when he had his whole life left to live.
@@carebears4295 Casey was in violation of federal laws he had marijuana in his system so he was not a legal gun owner and he could not legally have a CCW license. So therefore if Casey wasn't a criminal and was not breaking laws this would have never happened
@sandman0022 You must not have been watching the case on TV. who cares he had Marijuana. As far as a CCW, if you watch the news, you would have seen clearly that he had a license to carry a firearm.
None of this would have happened if Meade and his partner had left the area with their "team." None of this would have happened if Meade hadn't pursued Casey.

Officers have qualified immunity in almost all circumstances, except in cases like these. Using audible key words and obstructing their bodycam, I have seen the lengths cops will go to in order to stage a scene while they're confronting someone. Their unions are so powerful, a cop can break all the rules, then quit and switch precincts and start over with a clean slate. So clean, after a while their old violations get wiped away.
There is so little accountability, that even when charges are warranted, they are immune, or they have staged their defense.
Try hearing all of the evidence before you jump to a verdict. All you've heard so far are Opening Statements!

I would say that’s an accurate statement. He’s a Franklin county officer and US marshall. That’s what they do…hunt, track down, pursue. I’d say more often than not, the people they’re after, are trying to evade. It’s not like he was a patrol officer writing traffic tickets
I know nothing about this case but I will say the defense attorney is a turn off. Yelling and constantly saying "ladies and gentlemen" over and over. Hard to listen to. Loses points if I were on the jury.

Sandwiches in one hand, house keys in the other, shot in the back entering the house, deputy said because he was refusing to drop gun but more likely he was being told not to enter the house but didn’t hear the deputy because he had AirPods in. If he was pointing a gun at the cop he wouldn’t have been shot in the back. I suspect everything from the victim flashing a gun in the car to pointing the gun at the deputy is a lie fabricated to justify what transpired. The family said after they hear gunshots they came outside and nothing was on the ground except the AirPods and sandwiches.
It kinda makes me laugh the way the defense attorney is relying on at least one juror to be that dumb & naive to believe her when she says this case is all about was Meade reasonably in fear or not reasonably in fear for his life enough to shoot Casey jr when the gun was pointed at him. But we know that the case is all about wheather or not Casey ACTUALLY POINTED the gun at Meade. This is how this defense attorney manipulate & fool a dumb not so smart juror. Smdh 😊lol

Seeing all of these not guilty comments really makes me happy because I know Jason Meade on a personal level. He is the pastor of my church.

"While serving as a deputy, Meade also served as a pastor at Rosedale Free Will Baptist Church in Irwin, east of Mechanicsburg. Soon after the shooting, recordings of Meade surfaced, including one of him speaking at a Baptist convention in which he said he "hunts" people, and that "it's a great job."
He goes on to talk about use of force, saying, "I learned long ago I got to throw the first punch. And I learned long ago why I'm justified in throwing the first punch. Don't look up here like 'oh, police brutality.' The people I hit, you wish you could hit, trust me." So...amen, I guess. amirite?! JFC.
