I travelled on this many times in the early 60's when our school took us to the St. Marys Bay children's holiday camp. I used to do the trip from Dymchurch to Dungeness. I bought a R.H. & D. R. Tye from their shop and kept it for over twenty years, till it fell apart. I spent many very happy hours riding on and watching the trains. I'm so glad they're still doing well.
There is a working railroad museum near my home with two fully operational 4-8-4's and a 4-6-2 under restoration to full working condition. Standing next to the drive wheels that are taller than i am, and i'm 6'2", is awe inspiring. Seeing them shrunk down is strange yet really fascinating, not to mention beautiful.
The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is neither a "working railroad museum" or some sort of "preservation movememt". This railway is the "Worlds smallest Public Railway" and was opened for normal railway business both passenger and freight in 1924, by two famous Millioniare Racing Car drivers of that era. (Captain J.E.P Howey and Count Louis Zebrowski). It operates along a 13.5 mile stretch of coastline in South East England, and has of course in modern times become a major tourist attaction. The Count was killed at Le Mans in 1924, racing his famous car "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". Progress on the railways construction was already quite advanced and Captain Howey continued the project alone.
A magnificent line very professionally run. A real treat to ride the entire line. Would go more often if I wasn't so far away, but as the RH&DR often has loco exchanges with the R&ER I can still experience some of the lovely locos nearer to home. Thanks for the upload - also a very professional job!
I was there at 9.50 to 1am when the bugle at home was sounded , the gong you can hear is my rail gen e mail , its upset eveyone .. When i was told i could go on that piece of land opposite the turntable i thought the shots would look better or it would have been into the sun.Would you have gone into the turntable and had a go i was dying . talking to myself as well about cameras keep turning themselves off . The pics were brill as well . cant fault any off it....ian
In my last video i posted , i got off the train at Dymchurch it was stopped further up the line by a tree which had fallen , i was told everyone got off and help move it , if it ha deeen on the mainline eveything for a hundred miles would heve been stopped . Its run by a group of people and some paid staff and volunteers , they must have safety guidlines . and they do a great job all of them...ian
I was told by the signal box operator that it was kind of run down 10 years ago but the standard of the locomotives has never been better , it does look like it , i was luck it was not to busy and they were able to take time to tell me a lot about the working etc . I just stayed at Hythe station and for the 25p platform ticket , ive put up 2 very long hd videos which im very proud of as it shows just what some of the unpaid staff do in a very friendly way . thanks for viewing....ian.
The people who work on the railway do such a great job it shows in the video everywhere is kept well the locos are spotless aand its easy to film there as the people are so friendly . I found it very easy to film there , just follow the timetable and off you go ,Hope to do some more there this year looking forwards to it ...thanks very much for comment .....ian.
Actually a cosmetically enhanced version of the Gresley A1/A3, as these little locomotives were themselves built between 1923 and 1931, soon after the original Gresley locos were built. So they have been chuffing up and down this 13.5 mile line along the Kent Coast constantly for over 90 years......
Nos 1-3 and Nos 7 and 8 are based on Gresleys original A1 Pacific of 1921 design. These Romney engines being built by Davey Paxman of Colchester between 1923 and 1927. Nos 7 & 8 have had certain cosmetic trimmings added to make them more similar to the A3 variant. Note the corridor type tender on No 7 Hurricane, which was Captain Howeys personal favourite.
cool love to visit this place someday I was wondering Does this line have to follow the Railway Board's Rules & Regulations? Like a full sized railway would?
No 8 Hurricane built by Davey Paxman of Colchester in 1927 was built as a 3 cylinder replica (like No 8 Typhoon) of a Gresely A1 Pacific. However as the real Gresley Pacifics were altered to the A3 variant so too were Hurricane and Typhoon. Although the centre cylinder was blanked off, as the extra power was deemed superfluousat this 33.3% scale of the originals. The loco as seen in the video has a few cosmetic embelishments mainly added at Captain Howeys behest as this was his favourite loco. Capt Howey and his racing driver friend Count Louis Zerbrowski (of Chitty-Chitty bang-bang fame) were Millioniare racing car drivers in the 1920's who bought the 13.5 mile strip of land along the Kent coast and built this famous little railway.
Its double track to New Romney from Hythe as far as I know its then single line working from New Romney To Dungeness that's how ive known it don't think it came to lifting tracks they were possibly going through a bad period ,its come along real well lately everyones working harder etc . I will ask a member of the association when I see one about that they would know . Thanks for posting ian.
In the late 1970's a financial situation was developing as the area was no longer regarded as a suitable tourist destination. Thanks to a college project I produced at that time, detailing the seriousness of the situation. Sir Bill McAlpine stumbled on my project, and thankfully saved the railway by investing in it......
incase anyone is wondering they have 13 locos, numbered 1-14, 11 steam and two diesels i could go full nerd and list them all but i cant be bothered to type that much, and you need to see GreenGoddess, Black Prince and Winston Churchill there is 13.60miles of track with New Romely being the engine sheds ect.
They did not make the locos though they do the major repairs but send boilers out for repair they were made a while ago some of them others more recent . Would cost a small fortune I would imagine third size loco . A lot of cash .
The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway operates along a 13.5 mile stretch of the Kent coast in South East England. It was built and opened in the mid 1920's by two Millioniare racing Car drivers, with regular passenger trains and even freight trains. Post World War 2 it slowly became a purely tourist attraction, and still operates today with its original 1920's-30's built fleet of a 11 steam locomotives a couple of other steam locos aquired more recently and a couple of diesels originally intended for a daily schools train operated during the 1980's -90's.
No 10 Dr. Syn and No 9 Winston Churchill are actually based losely on a Canadian "Canpac" design. They were built by the Yorkshire Engine Co in 1931 after Capt Howey had paid a visit to Canada.
The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway was the brainchild of two 1920's Milionaire racing car drivers. They bought a strip of land approx 13.5miles long and built this 15inch gauge railway. Although the locomotives at 33.3% full size were originally intended to run on 18inch gauge. The locos and line opened with a regular public service in stages around 1924-27. So the locos are almost as old as the full size designs they copy. During World War 2 armour plated trains mounting Anti-aircraft guns operated on this railway.
It also did clam a German aircraft kill in WW2. Whether that is because they shot it down or the plane failed to pull up in time thinking it was higher thinking it was shooting at a full size train not a miniature one I don't know...
Losers! Forget them. They obviously can't appreciate the beauty of all of this, never mind the hours put into creating this masterpiece. Probably too busy texting on their 'phones. I know I'm very grateful for being able to see all this. Lots of memories.

What beautiful machinery, and such a wonderful video! Thank you for sharing this.
These engines look absolutely supurb in a beautiful location and the filming is second to none thanks for the pleasure and keep up the good work
What stunning machines, love it.

Ten carriages - that is pretty good going. Lovely video. Thank you
I've kinda been wanting to have one of these lately so I could get from school to where ever I want to go for lunch so I don't have to walk to lunch.
Well if you have a couple of Million pounds spare and a few miles of track, I'm sure somebody would be happy to build you one.

Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Miniature Railway
My home from home , miss the place cant wait till March when they start running again. thanks for the comment...ian
The dream. They're living it
This is amazing I loved that cyan peppercorn A1 Loco

Hello jean noel how are you thanks for viewing....ian
Okay, along with the Pecorama, this railway is on my Bucket List.
lovely! Thanks for this.
i would go to this railway for a B-day treat and until now i never really noticed that one of the engines looks like an A1

Great Video
Been There Before
Great Place
Blake
cool love to visit this place someday
I was wondering Does this line have to follow the Railway Board's Rules & Regulations? Like a full sized railway would?
no its a private railway
is hurricane based on a A1, A2 or A3?
No 8 Hurricane built by Davey Paxman of Colchester in 1927 was built as a 3 cylinder replica (like No 8 Typhoon) of a Gresely A1 Pacific. However as the real Gresley Pacifics were altered to the A3 variant so too were Hurricane and Typhoon. Love that teal loco❤️
I watched a video from 1984, and the narrator was saying that they might have to reduce the double track section to single track. Did this happen?
Its double track to New Romney from Hythe as far as I know its then single line working from New Romney To Dungeness that's how ive known it don't think it came to lifting tracks they were possibly going through a bad period ,its come along real well lately everyones working harder etc . +Xz D E V I L S P A W N zX Can you explain why they skip a number? 13 locos would normally be numbered 1-13.
pingpongpung 13 is seen as unlucky, Howey was quite superstitious, yet i think a work champion is aloud to be lol.
gripping stuff?
would the people who own these would sell or make one or two of the loco's in the the video if so please get back to me or if they wont
They did not make the locos though they do the major repairs but send boilers out for repair they were made a while ago some of them others more recent . Would cost a small fortune I would imagine third size loco . A lot of cash .
thank you
Charles Harris any one who wants something like this is going to have to build it them self
The Giants have taken over!
where ever this is or who ever is recording this I really wanna work there where is this

Is Dr Syn modelled on an American design?

what is the gauge?
+Edoardo Branconi 15 inches (381mm)
heh awesome I'd of helped move the tree too
Are these actually operating on proper rail tracks? surely the tracks are scaled down too? and if so... where are these tracks?!
Nauman Javed if you have eyes then the answers to your questions should be fairly obvious...
