IDEA: Travel from the Alphabetically 1st station to the last one.
Abbey Wood at the end of the Elizabeth Line to Ystrad Rhondda in Wales
They could go to Paddington from Abbey Wood, and then get a train into Wales and use TFW for the rest of the journey.
Abbey Wood to Ystrad Rhondda, I'm guessing?
@@NickBadley probably yeah 😅 sorry, I am from Hungary and obsessed w/ trains
You'll have to wait until at least February since the Rhondda line is currently closed for metro upgrades
2:44 you should make a series visiting abandoned platforms and look at their past and what they were used for.
This great little video brought back some good memories for Christmas!
Back in the early 1980s I lived close to East Croydon. I moved to Sydenham in 1987, then near Sydenham Hill in 2000 (my closest station would have been Crystal Palace [High Level] which was built to be even grander than the surviving Low Level station) and finally to Manchester in 2019.
When living at Sydenham in pre-Oystercard and Overground days, Penge East was at the other end of my road. I tried applying for an annual season from Penge East to Penge West via London Terminals. Sadly, the answer was no.
There are, of course, several pointless journey opportunities between Sydenham and Sydenham Hill. The expert track-basher’s one, if you time it right, is Sydenham-Crystal Palace/Norwood Junction-Streatham Hill-Tulse Hill-Herne Hill-Sydenham Hill.
Or you could do what most people do and take the 450 bus. 😁
Merry Christmas and Happy travels in 2024!
The unadvertised stop at Selhurst is fairly normal on most Saturday afternoons, to deter people from using Selhurst station when Crystal Palace FC are playing at home due to the fact it cant handle large crowds
Maybe you could go from Waterloo (Merseyside) to Waterloo (Belgium) possibly via Waterloo station in London. Thought it'd be cool
I never even knew there wasa waterloo station in merseyside and belgium
@@diyaaldeen1097 All the places named Waterloo are named after the battle of Waterloo, named after the Belgian town of Waterloo nearby. As a town of 30000 it of course warranted a station.
As far as I recall, the unadvertised stop at Selhurst is due to it dropping and picking up of staff from the nearby Selhurst Depot
and the overtime ban meaning that on Saturdays Southern ran the "RMT strike" level of service so because of football overcrowding they closed Selhurst that day.
Ahh, Sydenham, my hometown. +1 for the missed opportunity to have included Lower Sydenham, which could have been done by a further train from Sydenham Hill to Kent House, short walk to Clock House, then two more stops to Lower Sydenham
Now do Sydenham NIR - Sydenham NR. You missed out going via Sutton, or changing at Birkbeck for the train into Beckenham Junction.
Ah, the three musketeers are in train mood again. Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas especially you Nick, for coming up with all these "pointless" ideas.
Three musketeers, I like that! Merry Christmas to you too!
Pssst!
Nat....blink hard twice if you're there against your will, lol :D
A year ago, there used to be one train each weekday of the London Bridge - Caterham via Streatham 75 that went non-stop from Streatham Common to Selhurst, skipping Norbury and Thornton Heath. I went on the last run of this to be operated with a class 455, & the driver out of habit stopped at Norbury anyway, and someone got on & asked me where the train was going. The driver then realised he was supposed to be the fast service & skipped Thornton Heath.
I once went to a wedding in London, and it was interesting listening to all the London people at the reception saying "How did you get here?" with replies like "We changed at Wimbledon onto the District Line" then - "Really, how interesting, how long did it take?" After property prices, it seemed the second most popular thing Londoners talk about is how to get from A to B. (The reception was in Chiswick btw).
lol i love doing this :3 its so nerdy and fun
Blackhorse Road To Blackhorse Lane
Or Woolwich to Woolwich Arsenal (50 meters apart from each other)😊
Brilliant video Nick and brilliant to see Coastway Will in this as well. Lol, I've found Croydon to be quite tame everytime I've visited there.
Great route from Will, though I expected you might've done Balham, northern line to stockwell, victoria line to brixton, then southeastern to sydenham hill!
My brief was "Pointless Journey in South London that involves trams". I think I did a reasonable job despite the long connections 😂
@@CoastwayWill ahhhh that makes sense! and you did a great job!
You could have done a first in this series and linked THREE stations. There is a third Sydenham, Lower Sydenham on the Hayes line. Also seeing you call at at Beckenham Junction you could go from there to New Beckenham
This could also be a trilogy if you add Beckenham Hill
For a Point to Point, you could do Skipton to Shipton.
Good one!
Pointless journeys ideas:
Dovey Junction - Dovey Junction (it’s possible on a TfW map)
Blackpool North - Blackpool South
Birmingham New Street - Moor Street or Snow Hill
Manchester Piccadilly (Railway) - Piccadilly (Metrolink)
Manchester Piccadilly - Manchester Victoria (no direct TPE allowed)
Point to Point ideas:
Charing Cross (London) to Charing Cross (Glasgow)
Newtown Powys to New Mills Newtown
Great ideas.
If I might add some extra ideas:
Sudbury Hill (Pic tube) to Sudbury Hill Harrow (Chiltern) - pointless.
Or Sudbury (Sussex) to Sudbury Town (TFL) - PTP.
Victoria (Manchester) to Victoria (London) - PTP.
Or Appleby to Apsley.
Mate you are at my local train stations.....
I love your channel and content.
Keep up the great work 💪
Thanks!
You could have skipped Balham and West Croydon and got the direct train from Crystal Palace to Beckenham Junction. Lots of route combinations possible in South London!
I think on the day we did it there were rail replacement buses there 😅
@@InkItOut makes sense plus you got the joy of seeing more bits of South London!
It's funny how many different ways you could do this
Easiest being go to penge West and walk to penge east
Or crystal palace to Beckenham to sydenham Hill or sydenham to crystal palace to Tulse Hill to Herne Hill (which would allow some class 700 action) to Sydenham Hill, i can think of about 10 other ways too
the 3 musketeers are back 😂
The first step of your journey from Sydenham to Crystal Palace used to be very difficult at one time. Only a token peak hour service used to use that line.
Not only that, but to get from Crystal Palace to Sydenham on the once-a-day doodah back then, you had to use the now abandoned platform!
@@willmill82 I didn’t know that. When I finally managed to score that line it was a London Bridge - London Bridge circular service.
@@nigelkthomas9501 that sounds about right - Connex South Central started the more regular services on the Sydenham to Crystal Palace spur, from memory I think they changed it to the London Bridge to Victoria service, might be wrong
@@willmill82 I remember doing it in both directions to get both alignments at Sydenham!
An enjoyable video: thanks. It would be an interesting challenge to visit all three Pontefract stations in one journey 😊
There are so many railway routes criss-crossing each other in London, the possibilities for pointless journeys are almost endless
Great video as usual Nick. Maybe you could do a Pointless journey for Chester (Merseyrail) - Chester (Transport for Wales)
Alternative title: Where there's a Will, there's a way.
There were many ways with me planning it! 😂
Good one also Dorking to Dorking Deepdene
Had you used the side exit from the platform you arrived at West Croydon on, you’d have made the first Beckenham Junction tram, and then not had to run to catch that last train.
Love it❤❤❤❤❤
Here to ask again for St Budeaux Victoria Road to St Budeaux Ferry Road. The two stations run parallel to each other and are separated by an embankment just 20 metres wide. You can walk from one station to the other in less than a minute. The only downside is that the next station along, Keyham, is also close by, so it would be a very short video...
Great video as always - great team as well.
Shame about the strikes because as you say there are some wonderful options in London, strikes permitting.
All the Ruislips, Ealings and Actons. As well as the Wembleys and Sudburys can be very confusing. Even the three Watfords.
Welcome back to London again, Nick!
Point To Point Ideas:
Berwick (Sussex) to Berwick upon tweed
Sheffield Park (Bluebell Railway) to Sheffield
Pointless Journey Ideas:
Porthmadog (F&WHR) to Porthmadog
Shepards Bush (Central Line) to Shepards Bush
Oxford to Oxford Parkway (the long way round)
Bicester to Bicester Village (the long way round)
You should also possibly try out some Steam action on the Mainline, or travel on one of the tours.
Your channel is unique, but you make lovely content 🙂 keep up the great work!
You should do Stratford International (DLR) - Stratford International (national rail)
Have a Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year
There's also a Sydenham in Belfast, if you want to go there!
Thank you for sharing Nick.
There's also Lower Sydenham nearby, in the area you can also find
Beckenham Road, Beckenham Junction, Beckenham hill and New Beckenham.
Opportunity for bonus round missed: taking the most extreme and direct walking route back to your starting point, up Low Cross Wood Lane and along Wells Park Road, you'd've passed the site of the former Sydenham Wells Station on the old Crystal Palace High Level route - not really one for a winter's night though \m/
Brilliant video
I don’t know why that there is a disused platform at Crystal Palace that could have been used for London Overground or Southern trains. I have been to Crystal Palace.
And as Southern got rid of the Class 455 they have allowed more Class 377s on the suburban services. And Southern could have ordered new trains that would have been used on the suburban services in and around South London.
Upside is the influx of de facto declassified First Class sections on some services, bit of pot luck for you there \m/
You could try Catford to Catford Bridge around south London too although they have loads of them like that.
Have you ever tried Catford to Catford Bridge? 2 stations literally next door to each other but not connected.
Can you please do a a pointless journey from waterloo to waterloo east?
There's loads of stations all within walking distance of each other in that part of London to change between different lines
Dorking (main) to Dorking Deepdene
New Cross to New Cross Gate
Camden Road to Camden Town
Edgware Road (Bakerloo) to Edgware Road (Circle and District)
Hammersmith (Hammersmith & City) to Hammersmith (Piccadilly and District)
Bethnal Green (Central) to Bethnal Green (Overground)
Harringay to Harringay Green Lanes
when the proposed Cambourne station opens, you can do a pointless journey (or a point-to point) from Camborne to Cambourne
Will keep that in mind 😉
But not on a Wednesday as the train don't stop Cambourne Wednesday, just ask Jethro!!
You know I actually forgot Sydenham Hill even existed
Mainly because whenever I am filming in that area, I'm always filming and vlogging at Sydenham, especially around Southern divert time but the fact remains
Great video, seeing your channel grow has been a real treat, though I’ve never really commented before.
"Balham, gateway to the South".
Beat me to it. I wonder how many people will understand this ?
Chips are off \m/
You should do Bradford Interchange to Bradford Forster Square
There’s a Sydenham station in Sydney Australia
One in Belfast
All the london in this video reminded me you could do Dalston (Cumbria) to Dalston Junction as part of the point to point series
Next time in London you should do Catford - Catford Bridge (I have a feeling you were going to do it anyway but train strikes ruined it)
I love going on trains I'll travel to Scotland just for a day
How long would it take to walk between the two Sydenham stations?
It's a big old hill, so longer than it looks on an A-Z \m/
You should try Southend Victoria to Southend Central if you get the chance. One is at the top of the high street and the other in the centre of it, but to go by train you have to go via London Overground or the Tube.
Southend Victoria to Southend Central can be done entirely by National Rail
Southend Victoria - Shenfield - Romford- Upminster - Southend Central, or
Southend Victoria - Stratford - Gospel Oak - Barking - Southend Central
If you count London Overground as National Rail then Yes. Both require Overground (Romford - Upminster or Stratford-Gospel Oak and GO - Barking are both Overground). Similarly Stratford - West Ham then West Ham via Jubilee Line then WH to SC is also viable.
Amazing video! Idea: east croydon tram to east Croydon train or the other way around
Surprisingly easy, tram to Wimbledon. Wimbledon to Clapham Clapham to east Croydon as the quickest probably
Or tram to elmers end or Beckenham junction then Train to Victoria then Victoria to ecr
Oh ok@@CelticGoals
I think you should have walked between both stations to show how near they actually are
Word of caution: they look close on an A-Z or similar flat map, if you consult the contours involved, you'll see a stonking great hill and an ancient forest in the way - takes longer than you might think \m/
Should do a pointless journey Woolwich Arsenal to Woolwich love your video you do
Lovely. My local stations. An easier journey to get mad trains between than actually walking between. Really super steep hill up from Sydenham Hill Station. (which is deep in the valley).
More ridiculous than this would be Catford to Catford Bridge.
I used to live on the Kingswood Estate (those stairs from the back of the estate to the station were killer) and yeah when we'd go sydenham it would either be get the 450 or get the train from sydenham hill to penge east and bus from there or walk to penge West and get the train
Nick Badley you could do, Reading General to Reading Southern for pointless journeys. Wokingham to Woking for Point to Point. Farnham to Fareham for Point to point. Ashford (surrey) to Ashford (kent) for point to point. Gillingham (dorest) to Gillingham (kent) for point to point.
Catford to Catford Bridge pointless journey would be good! They are pretty much next to each other
Suggestion:Sydenham(overground) To Sydenham (Sydney trains)
East Croydon - West Croydon (no trams)
To guarantee that last connection, you could've alighted at Beckenham Road and walked to Kent House
Upminster to Upminster Bridge using as many lines as possible.
Sid in a mill.
Ideal for point to point has to to be Gillingham (Kent) to Gillingham (Dorset)
Possibly do Catfor to Catford Bridge
Chaps at Sydenham you could of got the 450 bus towards West Croydon, get off at Kingswood Drive/collage road, walk back up to collage road, follow it down and you're be at the station
How about Northolt to Northolt Park?
Once again asking for Canary Wharf to Canary Wharf via Canary Wharf.
You could do Catford bridge to Catford.
Mossley to Mossley hill!
Heres a 'Pointless Journey', Catford Catford Bridge
Nick Badley pls Do a pointless journey from South Wimbledon to Morden road
Try Birmingham Moor Street to Birmingham New Street next (without walking)
Me waiting for pointless journey 🥱
Me when a pointless journey comes out😁
Oh cool I was in the area
You should do Wakefield west gate to wakefeild kirgate
Idea - West Croydon to East Croydon (no, you cant use the trams)
Via Epsom Downs & Tattenham Corner is quite an interesting way to do it
Do one from Paddington to Paddington by circle line
I hope you will do Coulsdon south to Coulsdon Town soon
What would be your chosen route?
IDEA: Point to Point Hampton in Arden to Hampton Court as they both are have near enough similar names
Nice video
When is the Catford to Catford Bridge episode. Maybe invert the concept and walk it?
Definitely Highbury and Islington Underground to Highbury and Islington overground
IDEA: Point to Point, Tynemouth to Teignmouth
You've probably avoided this because of strikes and delays and whatnot but you missed an opportunity to go via Lower Sydenham. As for point to point would love to see something like Hayes (Kent) to Hayes & Harlington or from there to Harlington (Bedfordshire).
Interesting.
You could have took overground to Crystal Palace southern to beckenham then southeastern or take overground to west Croydon trolley or tram to beckenham junction then take southeastern
Croydon to Croy
Here’s an idea for both pointless journeys and point to point: Wigan North Western to Wigan Wallgate and Cuxton to Buxton
Am surprised no-one has done Whitchurch to Whitchurch via Whitchurch
Try Bromley North to Bromley South
Ah, Bal-ham, gateway to the south......😉
