Song dynasty dao are such impressively brutal cleavers, some of the only swords where describing them like "this thing is a beast" is actually a compliment.
I knew that you would do some amazing cutting with this blade! My favorite period in military history is East Asia from the 10-13th centuries in part because you have weapons like this!
This period is my favorite in East Asian military history too, not only it had weapons like this, but it also witnessed the emergence of gunpowder weapons like rocket arrows and fire lances.
That sword is THICK. Wowza! You absolutely crushed the cutting with this sword. If I saw you holding this on the battlefield, I'd pee my pants while I was running away.
Every single thing about this sword, from its name, to the broadening profile and its proportions, and the cross section of the targets it cuts, is terrifying. Thanks for the impressive demonstration!
Great vid, Mr. Marten! I hope I get the chance to review this model. Indeed, anti-cavalry weapons were nasty business. Those battlefields must have looked like a scene from Hell.
Tremendous work! Good job showcasing this mean mean dao. Glad to see the Song Dynasty continuing to be showcased, and that you chose targets to properly challenge the blade design. Great overview and as always lovely performance.
I did enjoy this useful review!!! I’m planning on scooping a sword from LK Chen, but it will be my first sword, so I’m doing a lot Of research. Cutting things cannot be as easy as you make it look! However, one day I hope to be able to cut things 1/3 as well as you do! Splendid video!
From my knowledge, it was rather typical of that era. However simpler straight hand guards, hand guards of other shapes, and swords with no apparent guards also existed.

What an absolute monster of a sword! 💪💪
This was awesome. I think I was just as impressed with the 3 level cutting stand as I was with the blade!
2 birds one stone: Happy New Years

Esp. when you compare this Song-era Zhanmadao to its primary opponent, the Twin Peaks Liao Dao.

Impressive weapon, thanks for the review
Good gods, what a beast of a cleaver!
I love it!
Now that is a beast of a sword for sure. Nice cutting as always.

This is the true Chinese war sword hahahaha. Such an interesting looking weapon, great design with excellent utility.
Excellent video. And terrific sword that one is
Just saw the tatami video and came hoping you still made videos. Love channels like yours
Subbed - I like the style of your reviews and the backdrop of historical reference for context
👍 Great uploads!! Much appreciated!!
Wonder how it compares to its predecessor the Tang-era Zhanmadao, its contemporary the Liao Twin Peaks Dao and its descendant the Dadao.
Certain features pop up from time to time. Vietnamese also have twin peaks dao.
Aikidoka you train at the phoenix society of historical swordsmanship? i trained there a few times with richard on polish saber.
Yes, I have been the cutting instructor at the Phoenix Society for the past 6 years. There will be a cutting class this Sunday, if you are interested.
do u happen to know where the antique is kept today
wow that's a crazy weapon 😶
is the tear drop shaped disc guard typical of that era?

Two cuts nice
well done. wow
Wow!👍
Try metal cutting. Try iron tube cutting. In the battle field, often a swordsman has to cross sword with another sword and swordsman.
