This just doesn't happen when you are a HTTYD antagonist (hell, even the good guys don't choose their deaths "points to Stoicks burning ship"). You are usually in for a painful end (Frozen (Yohan), Drowned (Drago,Ryker,Grimmel) Burned (The Red Death,Deathgrippers) , Executed (Krogan) etc) The only other "planned" death we saw was Dagur's "sacrifice" (which doesn't really count since it was his last resort to saving his siblings from flying into a trap and didn't actually know if he would survive) But Viggo? This man just walzed up to Hiccup, no remorse for his previous (or following) actions, wrapped him up to neatly fit his plan, lead him to what he was searching, making sure those backstabbing bastards would go down even if he wasn't there to see it, and once he made sure Hiccup had what he needed (plus a pep talk I suspect he was itching to give him. Like, that moment was so...touching? Hiccup was actually hurt Viggo would die? While usually he is pretty passive when villains die? Viggo was right, he is ruthless) went out to buy him time with four arrows in his back and with a skrill for company, whom he politely asked if it wished to stay or not. *_What. A Fucking. Legend_*
The only guy in the franchise to be actually able to properly tame a Skrill, the very same type of dragon that gave Hiccup and Toothless a run for their money and is one of the most badass dragons in the franchise, while outsmarting Hiccup the whole time and went down facing certain death with a smile on his face and his partner at his back. What a legend, they had to kill him or else the series would be over on the next episode, your story will never be forgotten.

Which kinda makes it even sadder, as he breaks his all-smug and unbothered character in the last second. The last time it happened was then he first fell almost to his death, then got half of his face literally burned away by molten rocks

I have a fun theory At 0:54 (at least before that scene in the show), Viggo looks like he's about to SPOILER Stab Hiccup in the back with a dagger, but I thought, "That can't be right." He's smarter than to knife a rider of a dragon unable to fly on its own and fiercely loyal to the said rider while being in the middle of nowhere above the ocean. My theory is that he was casually breaking the 4th wall and gaslighting the audience for the sake of drama
