Hiccup saw it coming, he's smarter than Johann, it tooks time for him to puzzle it together before he betrays him and Johann was such a fool to be a bad guy and think friends make Hiccup weak.
I'm sure he wasn't planned as a villain from the start. They just needed a cliffhanger for the last season.

Johan didn't betray Hiccup, he was never on Hiccup's side to begin with!

Okay I'm gonna be honest when I first saw trader Johan I confused trader with traitor and years later I was corrected and then here I am who knew past me was right
To be fairly honest, I had watched HTTYD1, HTTYD2, and HTTYD: THW, but never the netflix series until before 4th term this year. In RTTE when I first saw Johann, I wondered why he wasn’t in HTTD2. It wasn’t until RTTE S6E13 The King of Dragons Part 2 when the Bewilderbeast froze Johann when Johann was about to kill Hiccup by stomping his foot on Hiccup’s hand to cause Hiccup to fall, saving Hiccup’s life in the process when the dragon did, that I realized why Johann never was in HTTYD2 and HTTYD3: THW.
You know the funny thing? When I first saw Johann in Dragons Riders of Berk, all the Vikings were excited to see “Trader Johann”. Except, I was young, and misheard trader as traitor. So despite his not being a traitor (yet!) he became forever cemented to me as Traitor Johann. And then this plot twist comes up.
I'm getting Assassin's Creed vibs with Johann
If Assassin's Creed exists in HTTYD, Johann would probably be a former Hidden One who either went rogue or defected to the Order of the Ancients
This was probably the best plot twist in the show!

Johann is the secondary antagonist of the franchise. Drago is the main antagonist of the whole franchise due to his assassination of the chiefs and creation of the dragon army that sent Krogan etc.
To be fair krogan was working for drago

Late reply just saw the series and not he betrayed him then. He meant first time trying to get them killed they knew about the dragon eyes I’m guessing and was plotting to steal them when he first started trading.
I wish they mentioned these characters in the movies especially Viggo since he died sacrificing himself so hiccup and toothless could escape johans camp

They technically did mention Viggo in the 3rd film, wasn't name dropped but when they were being told about the big bad and how he's so smart Hiccup said something like "we've dealt with his kind before" which he means by Viggo
I don't think of this johann bit as cannon cos tbo he was a bit of a shit villain that some bad writers just decided to make evil for a final plot twist

I truthfully found Johann to be terrifying once the sheer extent of his duplicity was revealed, but that line did make me laugh.
No reveal has ever blown my mind as much as this one did when I clocked it was Yohan behind it all 🤯

I knew Johann is evil. He had always a strange in himself and was always a strange guy.
yeah, he has a lot of suspicious activities before he reveals his identity, it's quite a nice plot twist for the show

What I did not understand was why Hiccup just didn't beat the living shit out of him, he was wearing thick leather armor, Johann wasn't nearly strong enough to pierce it with his butter knife, and Hiccup has a really strong punch, like really *REALLY* strong punch, he would knock him out in two or three punches tops, so why didn't he do that?

Johann was just revealed to be the main antagonist of the entire Dragons TV series franchise. In essence, he is the most dangerous man Hiccup has ever faced, not at all to be compared to the sweet old doddery merchant facade. Hiccup has no idea how he would compare to this newfound enemy, so why would he risk antagonising him only to be killed on the spot by some trick? After all, a knife could easily be plunged into his face.

@@ShaunakDesaiPiano just because he turned out to be a villain doesn't mean everything about him was a lie, he didn't changed bodies suddenly or undergoed some horrific transformation that changed him entirely, he was always a coward and a weakling, nobody can completely lie about everything about them
Everybody be saying that Johan has an Assassin blade, but I, personally, compare him to Lord Shen, specifically in the way he throws his knives.
Trader Johann almost reminds me of Professor Quirrell from Harry Potter.

Personally after HTTYD 2, I always wondered why Johann was absent in it. The conclusion I took: he died. But the way he went out, and his betrayal.... boy, not in a 1000 years would I have seen that coming!....

They set up all these moments where he tries to ‘rid the archipelago of hiccup and his dragon riders,
Breakneck bog) dagur escaping the prison) giant eels at the start of the first season) his distress call)
Sending them after dagur) leading heather to the flyers and krogan) putting the smothering smoke breath eggs in the metal in the tv show)
Telling them about a secret weapon dagur was building in the tv show but was just a trap)
They definitely planned it from the start of edge, but I don’t know about other shows, mainly because it’s been so long since I’ve seen them and they aren’t available in my region. If they had heather with a lens the whole time they definitely had all of race to the edge planned out
I knew something was up when he led Heather into those Dragon Hunters in the previous episode but I didn’t think much of it

I actually like trader johan being the normal trader this twist just really ruined the character for me it was better how it was before

Yeah, the last point can be a problem, tho it can also be Johann provided the base for Viggo, with Viggo being Viggo, expanded it to great lengths.

I really liked Johann. I was sad that he turned out to be a villain. Tbh, that’s the reason I don’t watch Race to the Edge.
To be honest, Hiccup’s expression when he turned to Johann and saw the knife in Johann’s hand, shocked me. I can’t in Sins of the Past when Johann turned up in the scene with Krogan and Viggo was when I instantly knew Johann was in it to get the King of Dragons. I hated Johann for that, I actually liked Johann and his stories. I was upset that DreamWorks changed Johann from who he was to an evil character who was behind it all to get the King of Dragons.
DreamWorks, you changed the character I liked, why did you do that? Johann was perfect as he was, why change him??? 😔😔😢😢.
