I love Snotlout and Hiccup’s cousin vibes. Like they really be acting like cousins. They really hate each other but because they’re bound by blood they also will have each other’s backs/care when the time calls for it.

I also think he greatly admired Valka, "she's amazing" when she beat his dad, his dad was kinda the worst, and because he has some toxic masculinity issues I think, and the internalized homophobia, he confused his feelings of admiration amd respect as romantic feelings. At least that's what I want to think, instead of the writers throwing out all his development as a person and his growing respect for hiccup as a leader, cousin, and equal for a cringey joke that never lands and just makes everything awkward.

Edit: Also Snotlout definitely has issues with his own mom(or may have possibly lost her by this point, since Spitelout is always alone and Snotlout seems to have had a decent relationship with her in the past 4:28, 11:59), because he keeps trying to act like the perfect son/nephew in front of Valka, his aunt.

Yeah, it’s never been confirmed canon explicitly in the shows or movies but I like thinking that it is because it definitely adds an interesting layer to all of their interactions.
I also very much wished that they would have implemented Snotlout’s sacrifice into the third movie… with some character building and a little more focus on him, it would have rounded out his character arc in such a meaningful way(if they did it right).
Instead he just made random comments the entire movie 😅

I know that the movies and the series are different, but noone can convince me otherwise that snotlout from the former and the latter are just twoo very different people, and i prefer snotlout and the gang actually in the series, smarter, more mature,.more responsable, relatable, reasonable, not just for acting out unneceserily for humour like in yhe movies especially the last one when they were suppose to be more older
I totally agree. I don't dislike the gang in the movies, I understand there's not nearly enough time to flesh them all out like there is with a series. But it's so much more fun to watch them be more realistic and complex in rtte. It also makes their dynamic so much more interesting, especially (though I'm obviously biased lol) with how Snotlout interacts with the others. I think I just fall hard for any found family dynamic though 🤷🏽♀️
My sibling and I were actually planning a fanfic rewrite of everything after the time the series is set for that exact reason. We like the characters much better in the series (and season 6 sucked but that's not the point)

Tuffnut also deserves a montage, I dunno if he is pan, bi, ace or what. I feel he is kinda like Deadpool, whatever sexual/ gender orientation he is in that moment, then the moment changes. Either way, he is the ultimate comedic queer icon the world needs. I love snotlout, but sometimes he has nothing on Tuffnut as an icon.

I do like that in the shows they tried to incorporate stuff from the books wherever they could, like showing snotlout's dad and how snotlout and hiccup are cousins, fishlegs being a berserker, alvin the treacherous etc. they took cues and plotlines but put them in in a way that fit the world, and it came out really well. I think the shows did it better than the movies at least, who just haphazardly tried to align themselves with the ending of the books and call it a day.
This is motivating me to actually write that fic I was thinking about where Dagur and Snotlout just get together and talk about their daddy issues (which Dagur obviously has too I mean look at him.) And y'know, Fishlout because nowadays I couldn't even dream of writing a HTTYD fic without it

To be honest the lack of character development for him, Fishlegs, Toughnut and Ruffnut during the franchise. I mean yeah they got some during the first movie when they move from dragon killer to dragon rider, and yeah some episodes of the serie were dedicated to them and showed some development... But it's minor in order to keep the status quo intact.
I mean just look at Snotlout in the third movie, he is still insecure about his masculinity (he feels threatened of the presence of Eret), i don't remember well but I do think he still considers women (in this case Valka) as weaker than him because he tries to flirt with her by impressing her which would've been fine, he is allowed to have a love interest of course, if Valka wasn't his aunt. I guess they are not related by blood, i hope so, but she is still the mother of Hiccup, and Hiccup is his cousin as mentioned in the show. So it is still his aunt technically. If you think about it, you realize that they put that whole flirt with valka thing just because they needed Snotlout to flirt for comedy, because it is the status quo. He is a macho, he heavily flirts with women, he does that all the time.
I'm not saying I wanted him to not be those things anymore, I mean the whole "himbo" part of Rustik is what makes him funny and appealing as a character, it's also the reason why he is my favorite character of the franchise. But it's possible to have him developp as a character without loosing these characteristics, they proved that in his dedicated episodes in the show !
I love and will always love the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, but the fact that these three characters (even if I only used Snotlout as an example) were completely forgotten will always be (to me) the biggest flaw of this franchise
this happens mostly in the 3rd movie, it totally ignores the characters that aren't: toothless, hiccup and light fury, the others are just extras that don't matter (astrid a little of course) and sometimes they're just there to make a bad comedy like snotlout flirting with hiccup's mother, the fact that she is considered his aunt makes everything worse, it seems they didn't even bother to watch the series, if they couldn't do much better scenes for this movie, not just something without salt or too stupid , well thought out and well structured things like in RTTE.
