Lovely consistency. This formulation is technically a cream lotion as it contains water. Body butters are anhydrous formulations. This means they contain no water and are comprised entirely of oils and butters. A preservative is usually not needed in body butters unless there is a chance that water might be introduced into the product. For example, using wet hands to apply the product or using it in the shower. The use of a antioxidant such as Vitamin E is highly recommended when making body butters as it will help to prolong the shelf life of the product. Vitamin E helps to prevent rancidity of. the oils and butters. Also, most if not all, preservatives have what is called a Flashpoint. This means they are only effective when used at the manufacturer's recommended temperature and below. If added above the recommended temperature they will 'burn off' and become ineffective. Again, the consistency of your finish product was amazing. As formulaters who are no longer novices, we often overlook the fact that people look to us for knowledge. A majority of these videos become tutorials whether or not they are meant to be.
Wonderful feedback, thank you so much! I love the idea of adding the Vitamin E. I will definitely try that. We market our "barrier cream consistency lotion" as a body butter to our customers because of the texture and because of the high content of wonderful butters. We steer away from the anhydrous version in the summer months here in southern California, because it's just too hot, and the butters will melt. An emulsified version is the perfect alternative. We always add the preservative at a temperature that will not burn off of course, because we want our products to fresh as long as possible.
Even with an anhydrous product it's still a wise choice to use a presevatives so incase a client keeps their product in the shower or bathroom and accidentally gets water in the butter as it doesn't take much for bacteria to grow! Not a chance I would want to take!
Thanks @Kim Rawls for your info, as I was just thinking the same thing about butters vs. lotion with water content. Education is key. Video was great, loved the breakdown of measurements

Thank you so much! It's more of a marketing decision. You'll notice a lot of commercial body butters contain water. They have chosen to do that for shelf stability. And, consumers are attracted to the whipped buttery texture, so it is a descriptive word that allows the consumer to know what the product will feel like before purchasing and using it. It's a marketing term more so than a literal term. I hope that helps! :-)

@@karimyyy4653 Hi! Shelf life is up to two years. When making any skin care product where water is added, a preservative is a must. The balance of emulsifiers to solid and liquid oils is up to you as the creator. Everyone has a different quality they are looking for in the texture of their product. That's the fun part of being a bath and body artisan. ;-)

If so, when you added vitamin E, what was the percentage? Also can I use essential oils and place of the fragrance? If so, may you please provide the percentages Please and thank you 😊
Hi I love how detailed you were in this video. I saw other videos which those youtubers stated you shouldn't use no more than 1.5 % preservatives in your products. So if you're making a big batch (let's say to fill approximately 20 jars ) would you put more than 1.5% or is 1.5% the perfect measurement no matter the amount of product you're making? Sorry if this is super long lol I'm just so lost when it comes to preservatives

And, consumers are attracted to the whipped buttery texture, so it is a descriptive word that allows the consumer to know what the product will feel like before purchasing and using it. It's a marketing term more so than a literal term. I hope that helps! :-)
Thank you for sharing this video!!! It looks so luxurious! How long is the shelf life of this butter? Am I asking too much if I would like to know what kind of stability testing you've done on this product? This is really awesome, thus I am eager to learn more
I have batches I have tested from about two years ago, and it's still going strong. But, I typically put 12 months on my labels.
@@TyarsEssentials thank you for your reply! Two years is awesome
@@TyarsEssentials does it last that long without a rheology modifier?
@@karimyyy4653 Hi! Shelf life is up to two years. When making any skin care product where water is added, a preservative is a must. The balance of emulsifiers to solid and liquid oils is up to you as the creator. Everyone has a different quality they are looking for in the texture of their product. That's the fun part of being a bath and body artisan. ;-)
If you want to make a body butter with water but thicker and a bit less 'loose' which ingredients would you add more of?
I would suggest checking out this little cheat sheet, and adjusting the percentage of hard butters and oils. cheatography.com/emmajane/cheat-sheets/ingredient-ratios-for-lotion-making/
This looks amazing I would want to try it out this weekend but is Cetyl alcohol need can I just use more Ewax (only because I don’t have cetyl alcohol) also will it still thicken up if I use like a kitchen aid instead of the hand mixer??
I would try a small batch with the Kitchen Aid, I am not sure if it will reach emulsion. Yes, you can substitute a bit of e-wax for the Cetyl Alcohol.
I have a question? Why do you add a preservative if you are adding a 100% vegetable glycerin, which is a stabilizer and preservative in itself?
Hi! Good question. I myself have not heard that glycerin is a preservative. So, I’m not sure about that. But, I add a paraben free preservative to all of my products that have water content for safety.
Theres more water than glycerine so it would mold
Love video thanks💖🏘💕✨😊
Thank you for the compliment, it's my pleasure!
please what oil can i replace avocado with? Avocado oil is pretty expensive here. i love your recipe. thanx
You can use Olive oil as they are both "similar" in terms of consistency.
There are multiple oils that can be used. Its just based off your personal preference. Search natural oils on google
is the cetyl alcahol really needed for this batch? i cannot seem to find it any place i have looked. i found optiphen and the emulsion wax the natural type. thanks i make a medicated oil and wanted to use this for my arthritis pain. thank you so much. Sam
I use it for the texture I want to achieve.
Think you could swap out coco butter for mango butter? Or add mango and cocoa butter to equal the same weight?
Oh, yes! Definitely, that would be fabulous!
When you add water to your body ,will it still melt under the influence of heat or the sun ?
I have kept mine in the car for hours with over 100 degree heat, no problem, but it will still melt at extremely high temperatures.
Regarding water, how hot should the water be? As well as oils??
Mine are typically at 175 to 180 degrees.
Can we add arrowroot powder to cut down on the greasiness of the butters?
I don’t know if I’d add arrowroot to this formulation. It’s not greasy and won’t really need it.
@@TyarsEssentials so is it more of a lotion consistency then an actual body butter consistency?
Thanks so much for this
Hi there, thanks for the video! Just wondering if you added the shea butter? I saw it sitting there but didn't see you add it. Also what kind of preservative do you use?
Yes, maybe I missed it, lol. Optiphen
hi ! the liquid aloe vera is that aloe vera juice ? if not where can i get liquid aloe vera
It's Aloe Vera juice, no additives. You can get it from GNC.
@@TyarsEssentials awesome just as I thought I have a whole gallon here. I'm excited to try this
@@TyarsEssentials it came out absolutely perfect thank sooo much
One more question is it ok yo add color to this formula ?
I Dont have avocado oil can I use grapeseed or sunflower oil?
You sure can. ;-)
@Tyars Essentials Hello gorgeous, is the preservative used broad spectrum? In your previous reply to a comment about adding vitamin E, you've mentioned you'll try it. Have you? If so, when you added vitamin E, what was the percentage? Also can I use essential oils and place of the fragrance? If so, may you please provide the percentages Please and thank you 😊
I use optiphen. I am not sure of the percentages off hand. I'll have to work on that. ;-)
Would it be possible to use strained fresh aloe vera liquid in it instead of liquid aloe? I have an abundance of it growing outside
Yes! Definitely! (Maybe even better) 🙂
If I wanted to make a multicolored body butter what step or when would I add the color?
I would add it, when you add the fragrance oil.
Thank you for the compliement! Yes, I do about 1 percent, no matter the size of the batch. Just be sure its thoroughly incorporated.
And also use the suppliers recommendation guidelines for preservatives and EOs/FOs
Hi there can this be used in hair?
Can I use essential oil instead of the fragrance?
Oh, yes of course! Just be sure to research the usage rate. Every oil is different.
