Thank you Gary. I thoroughly enjoyed going for a walk with you and “Jack”. Also learnt a lot more watching you create the iMovie “live” which I missed however the value of your lesson still great in May of 2022. Thank you once again for sharing your knowledge and time so generously. 🤗💐👏👏👏👏💕
Missed your live presentation. Love your teaching. As a senior, I find the jump cuts seem to feed, if not, even begin to develop attention deficit. What's great is that I can adapt the transitions to allow us older folks to see and understand what's going on!! (ha-ha). As a long time iMovie user, I still learn and fine tune my skills, thanks to you, "The Master" ! Great job Gary!
Very well done. I found that in watching a live "how to" one can glean a great amount of knowledge, questions, and techniques, that may not become apparent on a structured tutorial. I am new to MAC and have benefited extensively from your videos. Loved your dog. Cheers!
The hour flew by! I appreciate you trying out new delivery formats. (Also appreciate that you clearly put some thought into your choices.) Just my own opinion, but I think Jack's crazy dance at the front doorstep deserved to make the final cut. Thanks for all of your time and effort educating this fairly new Mac user.
I love making little videos like this. This is such an awesome tutorial. I loved learning all the little tricks to the program. I'm so glad I watched. I was considering subscribing to Adobe Rush, but now I don't have to! Thanks for taking the time to do this video.
I forgot to mention in my earlier comment that I recently purchased Final Cut Pro and totally overwhelmed with the complexity of the program. But I’m determined to master it. Once again thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills so generously. 🤗💐👏👏💕
I never comment on videos, but this is the second time I watch your videos your work is so amazing! Your knowledge is the best, and small world! I knew this place looked familiar! I love City Park- Thank you so much for the step by step process
Brilliant! I've just caught up with this as I missed the live version, and it's really helpful and interesting to see you building the movie before our eyes. (Plus I ❤️ Jack! What a star.) Great format. I look forward to your doing more live streamed tutorials to complement the great regular ones. 👍🏻
Hey Gary: Thanks for showing the creative process as you use iMovie. Never really used it with my late 2008 Macbook Pro up to now (simply exported slideshows from Events in iPhoto) but I have an M1 Macbook Air on order. Your videos will help me a lot when I get it.
What a fantastic tutorial! Easily the best that I've seen so far. The "real live" editing approach is so useful and I learned so much. The other important thing I find after watching this video is it gives me more confidence the next time I use iMovie using the same process or approach in editing a video because I have seen you, the master, doing the same. Thank you so much. Merry Christmas to you Gary and to Jack!
ive been using imovie for 3 weeks now to add transitions to all ,select all videos and click on the transition you want its add transition to all clips, nice video
Your videos are so easy to follow. I haven't completed all of this video yet. Im Breaking it up in different times, but I will finish it. But are you say basically clips should only be about 1 second . It's hard for me to decide what part of the clips I want to use in my videos. But I like how you said action cuts. So I am going to practice on that. Maybe it will become easier if I look for those. thanks again.
Dear Gary, thank you for these wonderful tips! I have a problem with audio while recording screencasts. My t.bone microphone’s channels are both recorded on the right channel only. This sounds weird. I can’t find a way to switch to mono, not in the audio settings nor in the midi-audio settings. I use QuickTime Player for recording and iMovie for post-editing. Do you know, what to do? Thanks in advance and greetings from Germany!
How are you connecting the mic to your Mac? Is it USB, or do you have to use an adapter to convert analog to USB? If so, maybe get one that is mono or use an adapter to convert the analog stereo audio to mono before going into the USB adapter. Otherwise, you can play around with Audio/MIDI Setup (the app on your Mac) to see if you can convert the audio to mono as it comes in, but not sure of your skill level there.
The hardest part is deciding whether to start by choosing your music, then import your clips OR start by choosing your clips, THEN add music. You want to match the clips to the music (beat) so the video won't feel "off".
Gary, sometimes I’m using iMovie and I hit a button, maybe 1, and my timeline at the bottom disappears. I can get it back by exiting and then re-entering the project, but is there an easier way to get it back?
1 is the keyboard shortcut to go to the Media viewer. You can see it right in the Window menu. To get back to your project, click on Projects at the top and select your project.
I'm not looking for importing into iMovie to make a project. What if I want to record my video stock directly within iMovie? Can I just directly record the video I want on my MacBook Pro laptop in iMovie, rather than record with a peripheral and another app to import into the iMovie program? Can we cut some steps here? That's what I'm looking for in finding this video on RUclips.
Record using the QuickTime Player app on your Mac. Then do what you want with it after. If you just want to trim it you can do that in QuickTime Player. If you need to do more, drag and drop the file into iMovie or some other video editor.
Why am I unable to add a transition? Apple says transitions can't be added i the upper timeline. Upper timeline? Not sure what that is referring to and I have not been successful at finding info.
Hi Gary - Every time I try to add a picture from my Photos app to an iMovie clip, they are very pixelated and I need to resort to picture in picture so the poor quality is not seen. Any help?
@@macmost The pics I slide over from the Mac photo's app are fine. I should have clarified, when I download a pic from the internet and save in the downloads folder or desktop and then bring into the project, it is pixelated. I can only use as a PIP and make it small. Thank you for responding
@@dave0813 Select the file in Finder. Then use File, Get Info. Under More Info look for Dimensions. You can also double-click it to open it in Preview, then Tools, Show Inspector to see the width and height.

The most useful video on iMovie I have found. I like your clear and concise explanations and how comprehensive the whole episode is. Thanks Gary
You’re absolutely delightful Gary! A new video from you always cheers me up!
And bonus points for featuring your dog!

Thank you for this Vlog. I use to use Imovie, then they stopped producing it. Now its back. Simple easy for short videos. Love FXP as well. Best RJ
This is the best tutorial I’ve seen so far on working iMovie and I can actually understand what to do with it now. Thank you!
Cheers mate, I didn't know I could trim like that! (Without splitting clip).🙈
Thank you from an Englishman in a French forest. 🇬🇧🌞🇺🇸
Very helpful to just understand all the loads of features in iMovie.
Thanks Gary. I enjoyed. Yes, keep these coming.
that was very informative and effective...and we got to know Jack...all good, thanks
Thank you, very well done and easy to understand. Is Final Pro much better to use, I am afraid it’s difficult to use.
Final Cut Pro is a professional video editing tool, so yes the learning curve is much more difficult.

Great video! Thanks for creating this tutorial! I'm in the beginning of learning video editing and this is great!
Excellent work Gary - what a lovely dog Jack is! One thing I've always wondered about iMovie is the Movie/Trailer option what's the difference?
Thanks very informative video !

I am going to use iMovie to combine LightWave still image files
Why am I unable to add a transition? Apple says transitions can't be added i the upper timeline. Upper timeline? Not sure what that is referring to and I have not been successful at finding info.
The upper timeline is where you put picture-in-picture and cutaways. Transitions can only be added to the main timeline.

Why do you have a safe on your front porch?
