The whistle emote also calls animals to you and doesn't cost dinks, however it'll call all your tamed animals to you. The specialized whistles call just that animal type. Also, another useful early game way to farm poo is to catch a couple roo in a trap then release them in an fenced animal pen (I have mine separate from the tamed animals). They can't get out and it feels a bit cruel since you can't feed them, but they'll poo in the pen and you won't have to rely just on finding it in the wild.
Early game tip when flattening your base layout and tryna get rid of all the dirt, if a wheelbarrow is present in your current progression into the the game, how it works is. Normally if you fill it up manually with a shovel, you also unload it with a shovel...but did you know, if you fill it up with dirt and drop it into a 2-3 block deep water, the wheelbarrow will return to its box form and all the dirt will be unloded when you respawn it.

I don't add gates, just fencing because you can jump over it.
