    This is Miss May Whitley, who performed Judo exhibitions all over London in the 1930s. Her sparring partner is Charles Cawkell, a member of Britain's first international judo team.
    Not long after this video was filmed, Whitley split with Cawkell and teamed up with another judoka named James Harrison. Cawkell sought an injunction to stop the show (which presumably he had helped to create, and I'm guessing he also taught Whitley her moves). The injunction failed, and Whitley went on to perform in a traveling show along with several other acts, including trapeze artist Blondie Hartley and magician Amac Terin. Quite a group of miscellaneous acts. Apparently far eastern martial arts were little more than a sideshow back then.
    The show's advertisements declared that Miss Whitley would demonstrate, “how easy it is to handle bag snatchers and refractory husbands.”
    According to a March 17, 1935 piece in The Straits Times, Whitley’s act caught the attention of Ahmed Abdullah Bey, a millionaire from Turkey. “Ju-Jitsu Girl to Wed Rich Turk,” the headline blared. The article explained that Abdullah’s father was a wealthy tobacco merchant, making Whitley the eventual heiress to a fortune. Though Abdullah’s family was initially against the union, Whitley was quoted as saying she was ready to convert to Islam: “I am to be accepted into Muhammedanism.”
    Whitley married Abdullah and moved to Izmir, Turkey, where she had children and grandchildren. She lived a long life, and passed away in 2001.

      Stage falls are a part of acting in theater and have often been done without padding from height during classical plays. Unless he landed in a way he wasn't expecting, he was fine. The fact that he knew exactly what throws she was going to do definitely helped.

    • @Lreclusa
      @Lreclusa 15 дней назад +1

      @spicybiscuit88 nah, he was perfectly fine. He barely even hit the floor. The loud thumps when he crashed were either the bottoms of his feet that he was intentionally slamming to the floor or more likely it was foley that was recorded separately. The reason I say the latter is that the sounds are suspiciously similar to each other despite the various methods of throws he's subjected to.
      The shoulder throw where she brings him up over her standing posture was the one where he got the most velocity coming down, and the most likely one to have actually caused a bruise, but the sound was the same as the monkey roll (foot in belly) which is actually a very gentle roll due to the victim being almost doubled over to the ground when they're released, making an easy somersault if you're prepared for it. Also, there's what looks like a black mat or cloth beneath them and their shoes don't make much sound as they walk, yet there's terrible crashing as he lands? He's not even landing directly on the wood stage but the sounds are clearly not muffled.

    • @spicybiscuit88
      @spicybiscuit88 15 дней назад

      @Lreclusa ah - those are some good points. It didn't make a lot of sense that they would slam him on a wooden floor for no real reason - I just thought we'll maybe in the 1930s they didn't give a f. 😆

These two probably taught some form of self defense class/novelty show though, and he would be very used to being an uki for her. They also probably didn't have anything close to the mats we have today, and even those don't entirely save you from an unlucky fall so I'm sure he had a bad landing now and again.

      Most of this is physics based.
      Leverage, centre of gravity.
      Physics does not go out of the window in a street fight, AT ALL.
      And most people who attack you in the street are cowardly scumbags and not MMA fighters.
      I find it hilarious that you believe anyone who engages in street fights are at the leve of trained MMA Kick Boxers....
      It's obvious you've never been in a street fight OR you're one of those who does go around bullying others picking targets you know are weaker and smaller than you.
      Until one day someone uses one of these techniques and it will be you going out of a window.
      But yeah. if you want to believe Physics goes out of the window in a street fight.
      Good for you.

      @@Gigdiarychannel You do realize that what they do in MMA is mostly either brawling or just punching/kicking, which is included in ju-jutsu. Do your research please and do not be biased. Jujutsu is the origins of many martial arts, while outdated, it can still be effective.
      Muay Thai is not the "Superior" martial art it is just the best for the rules that they play with, Aikidio for example can easily dislocate your shoulder if you resist, or make you blind for the rest of your life.
      Brazillian jujitsu is known for their very brutal moves, breaking bones, maybe dislocating something.
      Judo can make you paralyzed if you land with your back on a hard surface.
      However, none of this is allowed because, it's a sport, not survival.
      Muay Thai, is indeed a very brutal martial art however. With their powerful blows, knee's and elbows. But in the end, it is the artist not the art.
      "Self defense" is usually just one big swing from a drunk dude. And the chances that someone who wants to pick a fight with you enters a boxing guard is just ridiculous. If too brutal techniques are used, have fun in jail. And please, respect martial arts.
      (P.s. Fights in general is something to avoid as you never know what your opponent might do to you, you could end up with a flesh wound or a bullet in you. If they want to hurt you, you run. If you can't THEN defend yourself.)

    Guys keep this in mind
    It's better to know something than to know nothing. I'm sure some will say
    "That won't work", "That's not realistic", "She'll be killed in a real attack".
    That's why it's called a demonstration. And I'm sure you all know that an important part of martial arts training is conditioning. A strong body makes strong offense and defense. I get it combat sports such as MMA, Boxing, wrestling, and BJJ has shown what works and what doesn't work......against a highly skilled opponent who knows who they're fighting. Real violence is chaotic, unpredictable, and traumatic. And the ones committing the violence have little to no training. And at the end of the day I would rather know some form of martial arts that would give me a chance to survive a violent encounter.
