Okay. I seldom comment but I use RUclips mostly for tutorials for various things - you are incredible. So detailed. So incremental. So layered. Clear. Concise. I mean… this is your jam. Thank you so much for your work.
A very good guide but you left out one small but important point regarding mining: You can set different excavators to prioritize different materials like Stone or the different Ores. Still, the ramp and retaining wall demos alone make this a good watch!
Great job! I can now start again playing the game. I left it because of mining & dumping mystery. Congratulations for your video. Not only it is essential for dumb people like me, but (being myself an editor too) I can appreciate the work and time spent to prepare the speech and each single clip to illustrate it. Many thanks!
Phenomenal to the point tutorial. Clear voice that doesn't add in opinion, this or that, try to sell something, just explains what the title says. Wonderful job, wonderful game.
Something to add to retaining walls. Sense the walls can be built anywhere but mining is locked to the grid you can mine through the wall and destroy things you were trying to protect. So long at the section to be mined is in the middle of the wall your good. But if it goes just a little past the wall model not even the area the wall says it takes you will dig past it.
Quick tip if it hasn't been mentioned already: Mining towers don't have to be built for their dumping preferences to take effect, meaning you can create separate dumping grounds for Dirt, Rocks, Slag, Waste etc without actually using any resources building the towers that control those dumping grounds. At least as of version 0.4.14B
14:47 lol 100h+ game? I have that game for 3 days and I am at 40h as of now already, so definetly xD And Great Video btw. I use the retaining walls for clean ramps above ground :D
Thanks, this is excellent. Love this game and want to stick with it but have been stuck on mining and dumping. I have watched several other tutorials but this one really nailed it for me.
TY so much. Grat video. One question. I can use the dumping tool quite well. But when mining I can't seem to get the level to go up or down when i want. If I use the angle it alays wants to climb, not descend and then all of a sudden I've pressed the right keys or something and it goes down. Q and E seem to have no effect. And F just goes up or flat. Until it doesn't. arggh. Also, it seems the really large trucks (tier 3) won't go under transports. This game is so fun.
Use R to rotate the slope tool. The default state for mining should be to slope down, and the default for dumping up. - but R will let ya change around.
@@CharliePryor well either way, I started playing along with your recent series and learning a lot to that way. So keep up the good work and thnx for the educational videos.
Hey great videos man i really appreciate it. I do have a question i can't seem to find anywhere. If you make your trucks create dump piles for say iron ore or coal, can you still use them? or will they have to be put directly into a storage building? thanks.
Still usable. Just moves the resources, it doesn’t make them inaccessible. They can be moved again. But to use them with your trucks, they have to be in storage eventually.
Yo hat man. Send my regards to Bluesy. I would just like to pass of some observations from my own game. Your going to need one flywheel for every two power generators and the idea behind them was to reduce how often your boilers fire. Had lots of problems from my steam turbines. Found out why they did not have full power. I used Pipes II for the steam. The tear 1 boiler does not need that.
Is there a way to force the trucks assigned to a mining tower to drop off their resources in a particular storage depot? I find that when the storage close to the depot is full, the assigned trucks start driving to far-off manufacturing lines to dump the ore there. I'd rather just have them stay idle if they can't dump their ore in the storage that is designated for that mining site.
great video.. just hope there are some sheet that tell how far material can hold.. like sand will spread 3 grid for 1 deep.. and so on.. as watching this video im currently try dig mountain and become ramp tu get access higher terrain on last map.. hope its not collapse.. lol
Great Video! Can you do an update power one. I am not understanding the steam power. Seems pretty straight forward but I have 4 machines that use steam to generate power but only 3 out of 8 of those one things spin that makes power
Awesome video! There were a couple of aha! moments while watching it. Wish I had seen it earlier. On a side note, I noticed that the camera was following trucks in some instances. How did you do that?
Excellent video and great presentation! I'm looking into trying out this game as a long-time Factorio veteran. This was really helpful to get a quick look into mining and ramps. Nicely done! +1 Sub
Is it possible to place a Transport, then dig down under it increasing the height so its tall enough that excavators could in theory fit? Or will that desabalized the transport. I myself use ramps, but just a thought to try out. Then again, if it is hard coded that way to never allow them past, I guess its most likely not.
I have one ask question. What happened if all resources are gone. It is. The game finished and boring or not. Ex. The tree when i harvest it all they gone no new trees to harvest. Also fuel coal all of that.
The exploration of the world map provides a lot of resources - enough to complete the end of the tech tree easily. There is infinite wood, and therefore theoretically infinite coal.
Nice video man. This game looks very complex, and I would guess it's hard to learn, I'm not sure if it will be worth buying if it is very difficult to play.
Go to photo mode (F11). This removes the Ui, and allows for greater camera control. Then hover the cursor over whatever it is you want to follow, and hit F
13:59 "retaining walls can be built directly underground" 100% incorrect. the top of the retaining wall MUST be above ground and the retaining wall can never go completely underground. THe wall is 5 tiles tall and only 4 tiles can be in the ground at most. The game will not allow you to place "any" retaining walls underground.
At nowhere did I say the entirety of the wall is placed underground. You’re thinking in absolutes with this. There is no other structure that can be built underground… the majority of that structure is placed under the surface. You cannot do that with anything else. I mean, this script is pre-approved by the devs. Not incorrect.
Do resources got wasted if you dig to deep and walls fall of,, Or you get the resources any1,, If so, Why mine in levels if you dont lose anything, Just go down.
You do not get any resources for a collapsed structure. Walls aren’t for every mine. Just mines that are close to buildings/infrastructure. - as explained, it can also save time from stuff like sand constantly falling in. When the walls collapsed, all that stuff on the side it was holding out… is now coming in.
@@CharliePryor Didnt mean strukcture,, I mean if I mine a Big iron deposite,, lets say 10 high,, and you mine at level 0,, the top of the mountain walls will fall down,, do you get this resurses too or is it lost pga its collaps goods,
There isn’t currently a way to replant trees. However, the sawmill on the map will bring in more wood, and faster, than the trees on your island could ever give you.
decent video, but you didn't even remotely cover how getting rock and slag works since it's essential for making concrete. I still have to go watch other videos to explain how that mechanic works - I would have liked your video if you had included this essential information.
Appreciate the feedback, but that is outside the scope of a mining guide. It’s a resource, like any other, and all of the equipment has formulas for such things. While you may find it essential for creating a specific resource, I also didn’t cover how to convert iron ore to iron, or to steel, etc. It’s not a part of the “how to mine” and “how mining works” process. That’s more a “what to mine” thing.

I bought this game a day ago and got stuck on the mining tool. With this video it helped clear everything up. Thank you!
Good stuff. Will really help people struggling with the mine/dump mechanics.

Just got the game yesterday, your video helped a lot, will check for the others, thank you!
Amazing video Charlie loving this game, bought it because of your videos ♥️
Awesome guide. Thanks! Question though, how do you set the follow cam for the trucks like at 9:48?
F11 goes to photo mode. Then hover cursor over what you want to follow, and press F. :)

Working on it. This video took me some time
Thank you so much for these explanations! Setting designations was driving me crazy, now I feel I am an expert! :D
What is the max depth of mining? This sounds the absolute perfect game to scratch my open pit mine itch!
You can go well below sea level. Like below -30

You cannot excavate where infrastructure already is
That global dumping tool button was hiding right in front of me! Just thought the truck busyness was a status indicator
