I've been involved in tech since the 80s. Her demonstration was extremely weak and my thoughts echo what Mark said. The biggest issue i see with kids today is that they don't value learning and think it's boring and uncool. Furthermore, the instant gratification caused by tech has made attention spans of kids and adults terrible. Kids are going to find this robot interesting for about .01 seconds and then go back to playing some game on their phone.

Kids today? No, I was born in the 70s and I don't know any kid who liked going to school. There's a difference between "learning" and "going to school". Kids nowadays learn technology very quickly, they learn how to order at their fav restaurants quickly, etc but they never like going to SCHOOL.
The issue with robots like this is the lack of visuals and the limited interaction. Apps on phones have ever changing visuals and interactions. Kids nowadays do have limited patience, that's true.

I also think there are probably more and clever ways to fake a positive attention result.

She's right that the robot's social connection with kids is meaningful, but she's a PhD in CS. She should have pulled in citations on robot interactions and simulations - there is plenty of research that supports the learning benefits of these kinds of products.

An educational robotic toy should be something that the children have to build and programmed themselves. It could come as a base model with upgradable parts that can be coded to do different things. Apps can then be loaded to do stuff like what she said. You get to learn coding while building the robot, plus whatever companion or educational apps that follows after. At that price point, I would expect something like this.

In the 1990’s when my daughter was in 4 or 5th grade and was dealing with fractions and geometry she was having a really hard time. She tried but grades stayed around the D area. I was certainly no help in that area so I called the high school and asked for a good quality 11 or 12th grade female who wanted a side job tutoring. She called back the next day with the name of the sweetest, kindest, smartest young woman (Katie) they could recommend. I paid $20 an hour twice a week for two months. My daughters math grade went straight to A’s and B’s. Best money ever spent. Her grades were secondary to the self esteem she learned she possessed from Katie and succeeded in improving her grades.

Kevin mentioning Oregon Trail multiple times reminds me:
I played Oregano Trail in school. I don’t remember math in it. I remember hunting Bison. There were 20 Bison in the field. We shot 13. Leaving 7 Bison left in the field. Our wagon could only hold 5 Bison. Each Bison provides food for 4 people for 4 days. So my family of 4 decided to keep 4 Bison. Giving my family 16 days worth of food. We sold the other 9 Bison for $10 each. Giving us a nice $90 to spend at the shops. Unfortunately our wagon could only hold the weight equivalent to one Bison now. So we bought supplies carefully. We were left with $37. Do to illness a long the way, none of it mattered.

A webcam and a computer can get this done way cheaper, way more easily, with way more interaction. Kids aren't dumb, they know the robot isn't fully monitoring them (that is, before Google gets implemented). In fact, I feel things like this can actually cause social issues.

I think the idea is amazing 👏 you know why, because it's like having a mini friend playing with you and helping the teach by showing the kids behaving and the only alternative to this is smart boards/walls with an ai on screen or speaking over the surround sound. The reason this is the only alternative is because the future will have computers as teachers, do we want that to he with smart boards, or by robots. Easy answer to that, robots.

Expensive robots like these just felt that it’s being done redundantly and very inaccessible to most students around the world because not every students is from a well off family. Even if their family can afford these robots, I don’t think kids would focus on studying because the robot looks like a toy and they will only think of play time instead. With her background, she could have instead built and app for studying because most students these days own a phone so that’ll be a lot more accessible than paying for a huge sum of money for a robot for students to learn with. Robots are fun but the novelty will dies off quickly

Ok so with 100 kids you will have 100 different traits and brain work. I know AI has gone far from what is needed but in order to keep up with those kids with different traits the AI would need constant learning. If you ask me 2 kids in the same house have different level of concentration and learning. This will not be able to handle.
