Long story short, when your wife says fix the door locks, fix your door locks. 😂
:D
My guess was the flux capacitor needed to be tuned up. Boy was I wrong.
Awesome video as always. I watched till the very end.
Thank you! You’re a trooper!
SO glad to hear you finally nailed down what was wrong with the 80! Awesome find, BUT you could have saved over a year by asking Corrie about it...... LOL!!!!
Remember the wife is always right.😂
Correct!
Been chasing gremlins for a while as well - Finally figured it all out... This is a good video for people to watch because it helps people to turn another gear in their skulls and think outside the box - You can bet your ass I'll be eyeballing things more after water crossings. It also reminded me I need to extend my breather tubes. I watched 'til the end, man...
The end story was fun. Sounded like a great community you're in.
ROFLMAO on the "Narrowed it down to one of these wires"!!!
Yep, it was the ECM that killed my good old '79 Celica. It was around the year 1996, and the local dealership was able to diagnose it, but told me that it was going cost me about $1,000 to get one shipped from a warehouse in Japan. A thousand bucks in 1996 was like $2700 today. I said forget it. I searched every pick and pull yard that I could find (this was long before eBay) and found one. It lasted about a year and then that ECM died too. That was when my beloved Celica found its resting place in a junkyard.
Oh man I feel this pain. Currently chasing a rough idle and misfire on my 80. It is especially bad during cold start but mostly smooths out when warm. Under load it does still have a very very slight surge but it’s barely noticeable. So far replaced cap, rotor, plugs and wires, fuel pump, fuel filter, tested fuel pressure, checked all vacuum hoses etc. next up is checking injector wiring and replacing injectors. It is so frustrating trying to diagnose.
I had a similar symptoms with the immobilizer in a 100 series. Turned out a junction box was corroded and was shorting/killing the immobilizer.
Great that you finally found the problem. Great video once again, it was fun to watch. Thank you!
You could separate that part of the harness and move it up under the dash so it's less likely to get that wet again.
Congrats on opening up!
Glad you got it fixed!
Great find! and enjoy the stories!
1. Yes, I do enjoy vlog style of BS-ing.
2. The CAN bus is your party line of data for computer modules that use it to talk to other modules or actuators. Generate and send corrupted data, and some other module dependent on that info may ignore it or take some underserved action.
3. Great catch by Frank! OBD-2 (light-duty vehicles like cars) diagnostics is poor compared to what’s available on OBD-1.
You are going to be telling the grandkiddos that McDonald's story someday. I can see it now, "Kids, let me tell you how cool your dad is....."
Hey Mikey, I liked it! I liked it a lot. Great video and so happy the 80 is complete once again. Cheers, Mate.
It’s all part of the adventure
Similar issue happend to my truck, I was going to comment on the last video but thought it was the ignitor after y’all spoke about it so didn’t post!!!
Great info mate , I’ll be mindful of such with my FZJ80! Currently doing a build series!
Intresting so now its time to get upp and drive again! Yes👍
Great job on the full length movie- Carol & I got out the popcorn. We did ramble a bit- and I have to stop cutting you off- I grew up with a cross talking family. Great editing- would have been a full hour the way we were going. Lots of Fun
Awesome!
In all seriousness, it has to be great to get the rig really up and running and reliable.
It's that feeling when you fix that one electrical gremlin that has haunted you for so long...
Sounds like a part Toyota should add to the heritage parts run.
I would consider dunking this module in conformal coating several times, or find a Tupperware box that fits neatly around it😂
I can’t believe the timing of your video! A friend of mine had the same problem in January up in Idaho. His igniter finally died completely after 2 weeks of what is wrong here. He spent close to a week in a motel before he got one. Turns out Toyota doesn’t make them any more. The Chinese do. They are like $150 to $200 and are crap. It got him home. I immediately called my mechanic at The Truck Shop in San Diego and got him to find an infighter for me. It took hm 10 days! But I got a genuine Lexis ignighter that hopefully should last the next 250,000 miles in my 1997 Toyota Landcruiser. It was ouch! $650! I took the old one which was working , vacuumed packed it and stuck it in the back compartment. Figured that was a lot better than buying a Chinese one and worrying about it lasting.
I feel this.
I just finished removing a factory alarm that was tied into an aftermarket alarm kill switch. Once all that was removed it sparked right up. This video just confirmed what I already was thinking. I'll be removing mine once I get the chance. Module is still there but they never removed the harness completely.
Finally! Who’da thunk! Thanks Michael! ✍🏼✍🏼
great video ! :)
The previous owner on my Jeep put in a cheap remote start kit and it caused so many issues. Randomly would go off, would lock it and I had to manually unlock it, would kill my battery. Just a big headache.
Stayed till the end and learned, cut your engine off in McD's line for free food!
Ahhhh. So that box let out the smoke that allows the electronics to work properly. You know, you got to keep the smoke in those units.
Crazy that was it
Maybe conformal coating inside that box. No more water EVER.
Full marks for entertainment value💯😂😂
Ok Michael @overlandbound who’s the owner of that clean Montero Sport you were driving? Glad to here that the rig is good to go 🤙🏼
That’s my Top Shop Auto Montero - on 33” w rear locker - ❤it
Is the opening music to this video from the movie BIG Country?
It’s licensed from Epidemic Sound so I don’t believe so.
The 80's computers let it down.
HEEEY!! You drive a Mitzi Montero Sport, too? NOICE!
Borrowed Franks!
@@OverlandBound Tell him he has great taste.
I lifted mine, 2'' body and 2'' suspension lift, put lockers in it and 32'' tires on 15'' steelies, now it's a monster Mitzi.
Sounds like a fun rig - I ❤ love the Montero
Yay !!!
So my 03 Tacoma had done the same thing. Just started turning off. Then the last straw was drying down the highway lights started flashing, horn blaring etc. yeah the PCM got water intrusion because of a poor front windshield replacement.
You are welcome
I think the same module affected your camera autofocus
1000%
I don't even own a Toyota and watched this to the end.
By the way; if you have to drive through deepish water/mud, put on a forward car bra and the bow wave will push a lot more liquid away. Of course, stalling or sitting in deep water will probably bugger up internal electronics as witnessed here so do a thorough inspection after each trip. Just hosing the body and underside down doesn’t cut it. 👍🏻🙏🦘
To add to that, I was told to have the windows up and the blower on high to create some positive pressure inside the cab.
And drive a Diesel 80 also helps.
Just never stop
Hello friend! 😁
Actual diagnosis @ 10:34
Coulda stretched it for another 10 easy 😂
Have you thought about switching to some sort of military vehicle like a Stryker or Buffalo? This beautiful rig of yours is not made to take the kind of abuse you dish out. It makes for great content but is cruelty to Toyotas a thing? :)))
Do they also do regrearing for a 2018 Toyota Tacoma ?
It is called a grimln module lol
would disconnecting the alarm control module completely prevents the car from starting, im just curious since these parts are almost impossible to find.
Electrical corrosion is a big problem for us guys who take our toys out there. Glad you were able to find a replacement but wouldn't have been better to just bypass that module?
The theft module is so integrated in the other systems - and we found one - so we took the replacement route
@Frank Powell man....that sucks. Hopefully there's a site that can do repairs on these boards.
❤
Yes, I watched till the end! How is that Montero sport treating you? do you have frequent issues? locating parts? I am looking at my 5th 4x4 and has an opportunity to get a 01 Montero full size (from a relative) or buy a brand new Armada. I might do both to have a fleet, but wanted to know how the reliability of the montero.
Franks rig! He swears by it!
I have a 98 & 99 Sport- 200k on one 250k on the other- all OE other than regular maint. Yes - parts are a little harder to find- we have our trusted sources.
Whats funny about my 99 Montero sport - I bought it for cheap because of a stalling issue- would die and blow a 25a fuse. Would only go a few miles- then blow the fuse again. We found that the shop that did the timing belt at 90K miles- mounted the crank sensor connector in the wrong spot- the connector was hitting the underside of the hood while driving- chafed off the wire housing- grounding on the hood blowing the fuse. The hard part is it only did it with the hood shut. 110K after the repair- running strong.
Think I should take mine out before I have this dumb issue 😂
My 95fzj80 has a bad box under the seat .alarm not working or fib door locks. Been chasing an odd sputter ....🤔 . You fellas have me thinking...👍
Take a look- not hard to get to it
@@topshopauto oh I plan on it 👍 Thank you
OK.... but at the beginning of the video. Was that a 2nd vehicle build?
Thats my Top Shop Auto Rig- 99 Montero - My air foil has the Overland Bound crest
@@topshopauto awesomeness 👌
I could possibly repair that and then make it way more water resistant/proof if ya send it I can check it out for ya I repair water damage boards alot send it to me to check it out
“The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.” Wish trucks were still just made of metal and sparks and gas.
I have an 80 series land cruiser and a Jeep xj..my xj is more reliable unfortunately
Aloha friend. That’s what I am looking for, Small Town Community helpfulness

Did Frank say your “wench” hasn’t arrived yet?! 😱🙈😂👍🏻🙏🦘
Still Broke
That’s Tulsa speak for “winch”.
