We just bought a 2023 sienna hybrid. I was hesitant with the hybrid engine at first. But after driving it for over 5000 miles, I told my wife if they put a highbred 2.4 L into a Tacoma, I would buy it immediately. The low end torque is awesome because of the electric motors. The transfer of power happens at more throttle I would say 1/3 of throttle, so if your low speed crawling over rocks, the electric motors are going to do great. When more power is needed with the electric motors, there’s a seamless entrance of the gas engine. It’s quite amazing set up Toyota has with this. Not to mention the average of about 32 to 35 mpg city or highway doesn’t matter. I would imagine a Tacoma we get 25 in the city or highway which is a huge improvement from the 16 to 20. I’m getting now with my 2004.
The ONLY question would be if over the long term (years and years) of trail use the drive train could stand up to it. My 2004 Tacoma is still stock and solid (original billsteins) because I know what it is capable of and baby it on trails. Time will tell
Sienna Hybrid is different from i-force max hybrid, i-force max is mostly only start-stop function+ a little bit of movement at low speeds. I-force has worse economy than Hybrid synergy drive
FYI, a Toyota engineer said in an interview that the durability testing in the 2.4L was increased by a factor of 1.6 for truck applications, meaning the engine should be substantially more durable and long lasting than it is in the Sienna or any other vehicles.
@@snteevveetnsabsolutely but also to mention, Toyota is since eternity in the hybrid game. Also they Run a Rally Car Hybrid in the WRC, so I guess they know what the electric motor needs to do and withstand
This is a new LC Prado. Not a replacement for the 200 series. That would be the 300 Series which we do not get in the U.S. anymore. We have had the old Prado for years in the form of the LX460. This is a cool truck, but I’m really interested to see if it is as reliable. I do like that is full time 4-wheel drive like the 200, and I like that it also has a rear locker, and sway bar disconnect. If I was thinking of getting a 4-runner I’d totally wait for this instead. However, I’ll not be getting rid of my 200 Series for one.
Kind of surprised in a little let down that Toyota didn't already have one outfitted with ARB and Old Man Emu accessories, and with larger tires so that way people can see what the new land cruiser would look like outfitted kind of silly that they did't.
In Australia, this will be the new 250 Land Cruiser Prado (replacing the 150) and will only be available with the 2.8 turbo diesel which has been around for many years. Little disappointed we arent getting any petrol versions. We also have the 300 series Land Cruiser with the V6 diesel which is our replacement for the 200 series V8 diesel. .
This might be the first non-Jeep I buy. Won’t replace either of my wranglers for rock crawling, but I’d use this on 95% of Colorado’s trails. Looks like it’d be fun to wheel!
It looks alright I guess. Another IFS SUV… seems like we’re getting a lot of those, 4 runner, Bronco, whatever the scout turns out to be. This just seems like a slightly larger 4Runner. What’s the point? We need a new solid front and rear axle vehicle to compete with the Wrangler. With no heavy battery preferably.

Thanks Michael, for this cool, entertaining and informative video. The vehicle looks promising. Let's see when the first ones will be available in Europe.
i like it alot, but i don't like the way the back seat rolls up and doesn't give you a flat surface, my 2016 4runner trail is my daily driver and my overland vehicle which when I put the rear seats down, i can sleep in it. Also I prefer the little 4wd stick instead of that push button. Still, the land cruiser is a wonderful vehicle, but for that price, which will be around 60 plus, i'll keep my beloved 4runnner.
Was really excited about this. Not so excited about the price (rumoured to be $81k over here 😢). Apparently we will get it in the 2.8 GD6 diesel at least.
With 8.5 inches ground clearance? And min skid plates. Nope. Lol. But I like what they did- they didn’t try to make it off the shelf ready and then charge an arm and leg- I’m looking at you Ineos. They give you the basic goodies you need, and leave it to you to mod aftermarket as your needs require. Do wish it had a solid axle up front so that in the US there would at least be one Yota with a solid axle. I love marketing - Full Time 4WD, not AWD. Lol ok guys- all full time 4WD is is AWD with a manual or electronically selectable center locking diff to make it actually 4WD. If it was literally full time 4WD it couldnt turn without blowing up the center diff. I love a front locker- yes use it a LOT less, but when going up a ledge or steep climb, it is so much safer to prevent a rollover. One of those things you only use once in a while but when you use it you are really glad you had it- kinda like a winch. That said- Yota’s ATRAK should be fine for most people for the front.
I think the biggest question is... Why would I buy the Land Cruiser when I can buy a 4Runner that does everything that the Land Cruiser does, but better and the 4Runner has a lot of the aftermarket support tested and working. It doesn't make sense to buy a Land Cruiser. It doesn't offer anything special other than the name. I think some will buy it because of the name, but that might be it. I wanted it to be a competitor for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and it's not even a competitor for the 4Runner LOL.
Because this will get far better mileage, be far better on the road (which is where you will spend 80% of your time, even if you’re “hardcore”) and it has updated tech. Don’t get me wrong, the 4Runner is awesome but this is essentially the new 4Runner. And the aftermarket will focus on the LC, soon you’ll have tons of choice. Maybe don’t buy it new, buy a used in 2-3 years. The next generation 4Runner will be the Jeep/Bronco competitor you’re looking for. The LC isn’t that. It’s supposed to be a true overlander not a weekend off road warrior.
Great job on the video Michael! Thanks for making it. I'm confidant that there will be a TRD trim to compete directly with the Bronco Raptor. Turbocharged V6 from the Lexus GX, front locker, Lithium batteries, plug-in hybrid, etc.
There are two trims excluding first edition, that's it. You're thinking of the eventual new 4Runner, where you can probably expect the features of the new Tacoma TRD Pro in SUV form.
It has the same engine as the Toyota Crown Platinum with MPG of 29/32/30 and the 2023 Grand Highlander which returns 21/28/24 mpg (city/Hwy/combined) according to the Toyota website, so I can estimate that LC will return an average of 19/25/21 mpg because it has more drag coefficient comparing to the Crown and the Grand Highlander.
I have a nickel based battery in my 2013 Lexus ES hybrid and it still gets the same average mpg as in 2013. Toyota really makes the battery cycling as durable and long lasting as possible. The low end torque is decent but then again, my ES is not quick, it’s not meant to be.
The only miss I can see is the loss of the clamshell rear hatch. That fold down tail gate is hugely useful - from a cooking platform, to sitting on it dangling your legs truck style. That raised rear section like the old GX where the rear seats would have folded into is a cheap out oversight. It's a an extra few inches to lift things up into it.
IMO, this could be Toyota getting ready for their new solid state batteries, and wanting to have the Land Cruiser ready for it in '25-'26. When that happens, I think you see that cargo floor drop to level.
Idk how I feel about the turbo 4 with hybrid. Seems like too many parts to fail. Yes Toyota is reliable but they have their issues too. I’m sure the hybrid system will add a lot of weight as well

Why do you not talk about the new LC 70 series? I’m glad that the manual transmission is still available, but sadly still no petrol model available down under. Looking forward to having solid front and rear axles still .
@@overland_adventure_nz It's due to the US's safety and emissions standards. The 70 would have to be completely reworked JUST for the US. Believe me, if it were available there would be one in my garage right now.
It looks good. It will sell. Don’t like the complexity of two engine systems to only make 300 horse. Landcruiser should have a front locker. Tire size isn’t competitive with leading off-road industry vehicles. To much plastic to low. Can’t wait to see some built ones.
Okay this was a cool review nice to see them back, but for overlanding my Ram Rebel handles it very well. 55K really- the aftermarket will have a field day with this. Maybe they should have brought back the FJ instead.
Toyota engineers eliminated the tailgate to save money and weight. They also did not incorporate a solid front axle to save money and weight. IFS used to be cheaper (pre C19), however with the increased cost of metal, solid front axles and their components have come up in price. I'm a huge fan of Toyota, however, the new LC is a letdown to me. I will just keep my 2022 4Runner.
This is just what the 2024 4 Runner was supposed to be. A Prado Based SUV with a different body and interior. They just decided to do a money grab, add $15K to the starting price and slap on a new name. Genius. If you do a little homework you can clearly see that the suspension, inverter plugs, window switches, tie downs, event the vents are all the same place the 2023 4 Runner/ Prado/LX are. It was the evolution that Toyota decided to take a way from those 4 Runner owners expecting the new one. Now those will get a Tacoma with a 4Cyl and a cab in the back. You will read the press release and say "4 Runner back to its roots, of pure 4 x4 adventure". Do your job please.
To me the land cruiser fits perfectly in size and price in-between the current 4runner and sequoia, and also makes sense in terms of the gx550. They lost me with the lack of 3rd row. Existing 4runner can be had with 3rd row but is tight. So a slightly larger lc with a third row makes sense. If i want a 3rd row body on frame i am stuck with smaller 4runner, sequoia, gx460 or 550. If the new 4runner looses third row, then im really constrained
It would fit better in that price segment with a 3rd row option. They sacrificed 3rd row and ground clearance for this battery pack. Hope it was worth it in the end. I’m glad someone is calling out the meh or actually quite poor ground clearance. Same as bronco sport - lame
The reason for no 3rd row is because the battery. Look at the sequoia. The seats sit so high above the floor it makes the cargo situation very awkward. Hence why you can get a GX550 with 3rd row seats but not the LC.
If you look at the rear of the Landcruiser you'll see that at the very bottom and underneath the rear bumper is the 7 pin connector. Absolutely horrible location. This is a total no-go if you are towing an off road capable trailer. Definitely the first thing that will get ripped out.
My 2010 LX 570 tucks the trailer harness well up and behind the rear bumper. This new Land Cruiser puts it extremely low under the bumper and it will get damaged on any decent hill climb.
Definitely not a comeback. More like a recycled name like the Chevy Blazer. This is to compete in the Bronco/JL market. And while mid $50s, is better than low $90s, this is not going to be a inexpensive vehicle. I think it will sell well though.
I think Toyota is about to loose A LOT of ground to Nissan. I hope it happens to be honest. Nissan comes out with a new Xterra, this thing gets crushed.
Definitely the antithesis of a apocalypse vehicle. That engine would shut down immediately and it’s also not wrench friendly it’s gonna require considerable expense to get fixed.

Is any new model suv really worth going into debt paying 50k to 90k on any suv before adding upgrades for myself i say no debt is the only thing keeps people at work when today the average car note is 770 a month before insurance, i just added a 04 land rover discovery 2 i paid 600 dollars for that i will build into another overlanding build all my 6 off roads builds cost me wY less than a new suv but im not hating anyone who wants brand new go for it i just like the freedom of being debt frreeto live not working to buy and buying up a forgotten vehicles i also own a 07 yota fj the new yota land cruiser outer looks similar but modern
This is a great approach to life.
Why do you not talk about the new LC 70 series?
I’m glad that the manual transmission is still available, but sadly still no petrol model available down under.
Looking forward to having solid front and rear axles still .
Because it won’t be available in the us
@@diegoarjona7605 Why not? Is it because of Jeep Wrangler and some law blocking any superior vehicle?
@@overland_adventure_nz They never have been
@@overland_adventure_nz It's due to the US's safety and emissions standards.
Nice pardo 😂
Okay this was a cool review nice to see them back, but for overlanding my Ram Rebel handles it very well. 55K really- the aftermarket will have a field day with this. Maybe they should have brought back the FJ instead.
Dealer pre orders already adding a 10k fee. Snakes they are Toyota please start selling direct.
I will just keep my 2022 4Runner.
looks like a new bronco! lol
@@davidheaton6206the 200 series had 8.9 inches of ground clearance on paper, I think that number is deceiving.
They will happily sell you a GX550 if you want a third row in this vehicle.
Luv it, and anticipated mpgs, but higher cargo floor Is a bummer. It's a lot of room lost!
If you look at the rear of the Landcruiser you'll see that at the very bottom and underneath the rear bumper is the 7 pin connector. Absolutely horrible location. This is a total no-go if you are towing an off road capable trailer. Definitely the first thing that will get ripped out.
Well I have been going for years with it in that location on my LC200. Inconvenient? Sure but hardly a no-go situation.
@@Umbrarian
I can't see it making through many trails pulling a trailer. At the vey least locate it above the hitch.
My 2010 LX 570 tucks the trailer harness well up and behind the rear bumper. This new Land Cruiser puts it extremely low under the bumper and it will get damaged on any decent hill climb.
@@dr.emilschaffhausen4683
I agree 100%
Boy, I can’t wait till the Toyota dealers get their greedy hands on these and jack up the price to 70k-80k. That’ll be fun, huh guys? Lol
And I’m signing off because of the hybrid engine plus turbo … bad idea. Sorry Toyota you just blew it again
That's the US government deciding that for them, not Toyota.
Is it just me or does this look old after a few days!
Definitely not a comeback. More like a recycled name like the Chevy Blazer. This is to compete in the Bronco/JL market. And while mid $50s, is better than low $90s, this is not going to be a inexpensive vehicle. I think it will sell well though.
Reality on dealer lot's it will go for 65-75K
4 cylinder designed like a brick .... BOOOOOOOOOO
$10k mark up from dealer. 😂😂😂😂😂
No & that price redic
Its a Prado. Not a “true” Land Cruiser.
This is as much a Land Cruiser than the previous you had in the US. Both are variants from the heavy duty utilitarian Land Cruiser.
@@Fe_lix its NOT a Land Cruiser! Full Stop
@@iwanjohnson7474 And yet it's named Land Cruiser by Toyota and has a J in the type.
Hybrid……NOPE! What another major let down
Meh
NOT a LC. total meh if not fail
Big pass 🫤👎
I am disappointed with it not having a third row seat. It’s the reason I cannot get because of my family
I think Toyota is about to loose A LOT of ground to Nissan. I hope it happens to be honest. Nissan comes out with a new Xterra, this thing gets crushed.
It's not a landcruiser it's a prado
Prado means meadow in Spanish. But it's official that toyota named this the Land Cruiser. So it's called Land Cruiser
Yuck....$70+k to get this thing out of the dealership and somewhat capable/ready.
Definitely the antithesis of a apocalypse vehicle. That engine would shut down immediately and it’s also not wrench friendly it’s gonna require considerable expense to get fixed.
Honestly one of the key factors in us never getting rid of the 80
@@OverlandBound I love the 80 series bro. And I’m thinking about getting one eventually and doing a build on it but also keeping my LX 470.
@@OverlandBoundI like this new version but also keeping my gx460 as long as I can
Why would the engine “shut down” ? I’m honestly curious
@@topreview3791 wow. Because things break on the trail. Why don’t you get out there and you’ll see
I would still take 80 series
