This MAY be a stretch, but during the Bowser Rave scene, one of the Koopas playing the music is sporting some pointy shades. This COULD be a reference to the original Paper Mario games, where Koopa Troopas wore pointy glasses.

One thing I LOVE about the references in this movie is that they never feel random and out of place, they did a good job at contextualising them into the movie! (Also wow! You managed squeeze them all in a 30 minutes video!!)

28:42 if you look at the taxi in the bottom right corner you can see the top of it says “save the kingdom” and this may be foreshadowing Mario getting back up to save not only the mushroom kingdom but Brooklyn as well.

  • @johnnobon
    @johnnobon Год назад +43

I just love the way they used so many old obscure references to fill out the background and world they created for the movie. They could have easily used generic cartoon stock objects and no one would have cared, but the fact the they really took the time to flesh out the world with all this stuff really shows that the artists behind it care about what they were doing. I also think that making their version of Brooklyn this retro wonderland full of references to the old Nintendo games is a great idea.

Mario playing Kid Icarus is my favorite easter egg because of how honored Pit must be being a Mario fan himself.
Also thanks to the 4th-wall destroying nature of Kid Icarus Uprising openly accepting its existence as a game sequel, Pit appearing as a video game could count as a full in-person cameo.

It's so sad that Toadsworth wasn't able to be in the movie; it was such a simple addition, and considering the amount of easter eggs, it only makes think that, for some reason, it was a deliberate choice to not have Toadsworth. It would have been wholesome if the Toad holding Baby Peach when she first arrived would have been a younger Toadsworth.

The Super Star also has a more dramatic rendition when Bowser finds it at the start of the movie.
Bowser's floating lair thing is also possibly a reference to Paper Mario, where Bowser's castle appears as a floating chunk of land underneath Peach's castle, with the giant spike balls on chains as its anchors.
The Ghost House theme from Super Mario World plays while Luigi is escaping from the Dry Bones horde.
The "peace sign" on the flag Baby Luigi holds isn't a peace sign, it's a skull.
The modern P-Switch theme plays while Mario is getting lost in the pipe maze before arriving at the castle.
In the vignette of Bob-Omb Battlefield, not only are the cannon and floating island visible, but so is the bridge and the Cap Block beside it - though it's replaced with a standard yellow Question Block.
And not really an Easter Egg but more of a missed opportunity, but the voxel art for the Question Block that turns into the obstacle course is completely original to the movie - it does not match any existing Question Block sprites.

4:57 all the way to the left, the painting is recreation of some old Mario tiles ( most likely from mario 3 )
6:33 Nintendo sticker on the Tv
10:27 This fire flower might actually be a golden flower from nsmb2
11:20 Clerk is also voiced by Charles Martinet
19:00 artwork on the right might be from the super famicom excitebike game.
Other references with no footage in this video: Wario’s battle canyon ost playing when Dk gets hit by the tire, Mario’s ground pound and Dk’s spin jump from the dkc games.
This video was so in depth and made me gasp out loud on how I missed some of these references even after over 13+ rewatches. Say what you will about Illumination, but I think I will always love and respect this movie for many reasons, one such reason being that it clearly shows just how much the team knew exactly what they wanted the Super Mario Bros. Movie to be. No potty humor. No politics. No woke BS. It's just a simple, fun romp of an adventure with charm oozing from its every pore. And nowadays, it's all I could ask for from a movie.

I have 1 more reference, in the Mario vs DK scene, when DK punches Mario and sends him to the air, before Mario says "It's a Me" Peach screams "MARIOOOO" Just like in recent mario games where she gets captured. In latin spanish, the tone and voice of the voice actor sounds pretty similar and I soon as I heard that, i got the reference.

Did y’all see that the main character had a red hat with a letter M on it. This could be a reference to Mario’s iconic hat he wears in all his games 😮😮😮

Holy cow, that's a lot of references! And hardly anyone would even see most of these. A lot of them weren't even Mario related, instead referencing obscure NES games and even some real life things. Great, great job with this video!

Another possible one: when Mario is fighting DK and loosing badly, he falls in slow motion and Peach cries "Marioooo!" Like she does in the games when he can see her in Bower's castle in New Super Mario Bros game for Switch (possible same for Wii). She also does this cry in the Odyssey game.

9:32 Deep Dark Galaxy plays here
    27:27 Mario does a Ground-Pound
Not only that, but the koopas surrounding him get knocked back which could either be referencing the Synchro Ground Pound in NSMB or the Yellow Goombas from Odyssey

This movie was a 10/10 for me, soecifically the og music and the countless easter eggs, I'm sure the kids enjoyed it but for all of us who grew up with Mario and other Nintendo games, it meant alot more for us cause it splashed us with nostalgia, their commitment to all the content they could fit in the movie was pure dedication and creativity, thank you Nintendo and Illumination for this

15:52 - A little bit more detail on the underworld piano theme with coin sounds. There's a pianist named Martin Leung who plays video game themes on piano. He plays a track with Video Games Live where he plays the underworld theme with those same coin sounds, along with a number of other absurdly complex Mario Bros. themes on piano.

I watched this video mostly to decide what game to play next to get more references on a rewatch, but now I have more options to consider. They really covered a lot! Just finished 3D World + Bowser's Fury since that seems to include the most things the movie references(even Captain Toad!). I've only played a few levels of most of the other games. Mario 64 might be the next game to experience, based on easter eggs. I've probably played enough Mario Kart to get all its references. Starting to think Donkey Kong should move up the list, with how much he was in the movie.
