Indira Gandhi became PM immediately after 1965 war and death of PM L.B.Shastri.
But, in 1971 April when PM Gandhi ordered army chief Maneckshaw to attack Pakistan, his reply was that Indian army was not prepared and India will lose the war.
This speaks about bad leadership and incompetence at every level.
Fact is entire East Pakistan Rifles and East Bengal regiment had rebelled against the invading West Pakistani army which was small in number in late of March 1971 and disorganized with no heavy equipment.
If the Indian army along with East Pakistan Rifles and East Bengal Regiment had attacked the few West Pakistani troops in April of 1971, the bloodbath and genocide in Bangladesh could have been averted.
By December 1971, West Pakistani forces had balooned from 30,000 to nearly 300,000 troops with the addition of nearly 200,000 razakars.
If the Bengalis didn't wage a bloody 9 months civil war, today instead of Bangladesh we would have East Pakistan.
As in 1971, 1999 Kargil war also exposed our political and military leadership's unpreparedness for war.

There were few West Pakistani troops in East Bengal in late March 1971 when operation Searchlight began. These West Pakistani troops didn't come with tanks and heavy equipment. They also didn't have adequate supplies and ammunition.
If India attacked in April 1971, the few West Pakistani troops could easily be defeated in a matter of few weeks as it happened in December 1971.
Chief of army saying weather is bad, my army is completely unprepared and India will lose the war therefore here is my resignation speaks of terrible leadership as was pointed out by Gen J.F.R.Jacob the man responsible for getting unconditional surrender from Gen Niazi.

Very similar to what Pakistan did in Kashmir in 1948 disguised as Pathan tribals and in 1999 disguised as Kashmiri Mujahideen. The number of West Pakistani troops in April 1971 was very small and ill equipped who could be easily overwhelmed unlike November December 1971 when West Pakistani troops ballooned to more than 300,000 troops.

One of the most sensible things that the Congress governments of the past did -- was keeping Pakistan bilaterally engaged on all issues including Kashmir.
This kept any third party from intervening on Pakistan's behalf.
The present BJP Govt's abrogation of Article 370 which amounted to a unilateral tampering of the LAC and LOC has thrown the earlier arrangement haywire.
This has now multi-lateralized the Kashmir issue with China becoming an active party in J&K.
Now both China and Pakistan have set up a reinforced front against India. It means no one can intervene militarily on our behalf in case hostilities begin.

The idea of blaming the past leaders is to hide one's limitations and shortcomings.
Half baked truths.. she was quite decisive in the 1971 war, but backed down after Pakistani threats to go nuclear in the 70s, as well as going half hearted on nuclear tests in 1974. It was the Vajpayee govt. that completed the nuclear tests in 98 and made the country openly nuclear. Not to mention, her support for proto khalistanis in the 80s also was a massive failure, a failure that she paid for with her life.
The 1971 war also wasn't a great war by any standards, technically ot geographically, looking at current wars in ukraine and gaza. India has never been a nation that can wage open and brutal war. And we are still weak, no govt will admit that we cannot fight beyond 4-5 months.

I have a long memory. We created Bangladesh which sheltered the NE terrorists including the ULFA. 93000 Prisoners' of War were handed over to pakistan in exchange of nothing. Even the 54 Indian soldiers captured by Pakistan was not bargained and are still languishing in Pakistani jails.
After 30 lakh east pakistanis were killed by the Khan senas, which included 25 lakh hindu bengalis, Indira Gandhi sent troops to Pakistan. The troops were sent only when the western border of India was attacked by Pakistan. Congress have always treated Bengalis as enemies since the time gandhi joined INC, possibly in 1919.
