I had a 3-year relationship with a woman who, a week after telling me she adored me and that we had an amazing connection, ghosted me and ran off with another guy. That's how I came to understand narcissists. If you've ever been through something like that, VR doesn't scare you anymore. Finding out that what you thought was real was actually faked can happen in the "real" world.
Ever since I tried VR few years ago I have started reflecting and changing my perspective and trying to use my mind and my experience to figure out or understand more about the nature of reality and consciousness. I mastered dream world at a young age because I preferred to sleep rather than deal with stress of reality. Sleep was my escape. Every movie that I remember from 1980s to present I would fall asleep during movies or else I would look at movies and look for lessons I can extrapolate and use to improve myself. I would miss majority of plot but would look for the moral of the story. Nothing could compare to physically going through the seemingly easy or difficult life struggles. I have now understand the saying “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” on several levels including a much deeper level than i could before

I liken simulation theory to turtle theory: the universe exists on the back of a turtle, and it’s turtles all the way down. Our only solid evidence of existence is our internal thought life-our consciousness. Whether that exists “in reality” or “in simulation” is a semantic point in my opinion. If it’s a simulation, what hosts the simulation? Who programmed it? Do they also exist in a meta simulation? What does simulation even mean? Finally, does it somehow diminish, marginalize or invalidate this reality?

Yes. I love your question about what is the host reality that precedes the simulation? To me this begins look like the assertion of god creating the universe. It becomes a potential infinite loop of then who created x...and so on.
@@lopezjraul to me, I find the idea of no higher intelligence harder to accept than a creator because the simple existence of reality seems peculiar otherwise. It truly seems far too much like a construct when we merely consider the immense number of physical constants or ratios (collectively parameters) that must be exquisitely tuned (to as-yet humanly irreproducible levels of precision) in order for the universe to operate and life to exist. The probability that these 33 values would all exist within the necessary tolerances by chance is the smallest probability I have ever encountered being no more than 1 in 10^3600, (that’s 1 chance out of 1 followed by 3600 zeroes).
The parameters I know about (i.e. why they matter) are as follows:
*strong nuclear force constant
if larger: no hydrogen would form; atomic nuclei for most life-essential elements would be unstable; thus, no life chemistry
if smaller: no elements heavier than hydrogen would form: again, no life chemistry
*weak nuclear force constant
if larger: too much hydrogen would convert to helium in big bang; hence, stars would convert too much matter into heavy elements making life chemistry impossible
if smaller: too little helium would be produced from big bang; hence, stars would convert too little matter into heavy elements making life chemistry impossible
*gravitational force constant
if larger: stars would be too hot and would burn too rapidly and too unevenly for life chemistry
if smaller: stars would be too cool to ignite nuclear fusion; thus, many of the elements needed for life chemistry would never form

I accepted consciousness as a fundamental part of the universe. As above so below. Our consciousness is multi dimensional. You can perceive the 1st dim. A single point. 2nd 2 points on a plane. 3rd 2d planes stacked together.
4th 3d objects moving through spacetime.
5th .parallel universe's stacked on top of each other.
And the "power" is choosing which reality you want.
Combined with congruence you can find yourself in some amazing or scary places.

I have the grand unified theory that combines the known laws of physics with consciousness. It was known by the father of quantum mechanics, Max Planck, when he stated the following: "I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness." Consciousness is FUNDAMENTAL. As Max Planck states, everything derives from consciousness.

My brother studied theoretical physics and we’ve had long conversations about the mystery of consciousness and why there is even an “observer” to watch the movie in our head. It does seem to have gradation. There’s different levels of consciousness even throughout our life we can increase it with study and mindful practices. Consciousness is the degree to which we can be self-reflecting.

I agree, I think consciousness is intrinsic like basic elements that make up reality. If the chemical structure is complex enough then consciousness starts to grow and the more complex a biological system is the bigger it’s consciousness and self awareness. I think self awareness is the byproduct, like an inevitable outcome of complexity and connections.
As David said, the idea of consciousness is not dependent on reality vs simulation and even reality is a simulation, which may or may not include our consciousness. Imo the better question is if our consciousness is separate or an aspect of the Sim.

I know we live in a simulation but what sucks is the fact that we incarnate back over n over n over again and we have our memories wiped each time but some people remember living the exact same life and some people have glimpses such as deja vu and what isn't fair is the fact that how are we supposed to learn and grow if we never get the chance to if our memories are wiped each time? Earth is a simulation prison hell but the fact that we have to keep doing it for an evil thing we've done and never get the chance to change and learn is unfair big time.

This is all a pretty complicated thing we've put ourselves into, which is a game of sorts in the big picture of it all. We are just beings of energy flowing in an infinite spac,e, now currently having an human experience. We've all created life as we know it to take adventures and explore, have fun, experience emotions and feelings, etc. We're all creators of a multiverse, there are so many planets we can imagine, probably an infinite amount., with different environments unlike our own. This is the truth whether you want to believe it or not, everyone of us experiences it we can live many different lives other than our own its our choice and always has been, it was your choice to be here and now wherever you may be. Knowing the true state of existence, I believe, is such a beautiful thing its so awe inspiring I hope you have a great rest of your life wherever you are in the world brother/sieter or whatever you identify with!

I should have been a philosopher, I’ve thought about every single thing that talked about exactly how Chalmers describes it.
Also I’m really surprised neither one of them mentioned the movie Total Recall. They mention the matrix and Truman show, but Total Recall was exactly about being implanted into virtual world and fake memories and fake wife who you thought you loved.

I think the more relevant questions will be more like how many types of consciousness are there? And like you discussed, is everything consciousness or a form of?
Perhaps the first states of concessions is the idea of something and then it 'being'.
And then we have a sort of chicken or the egg question.
But maybe an idea doesn't have to be limited to the brain, how can we prove otherwise?
0 is much more than just 0. Just because it doesn't exist doesn't mean it has no journey or story in to show, 0 also equals 1-1 and 2-2 and so on. Could this be classed as an idea?
What we do know is that nothing's certain, everything is probability and having infinate states allow for a lot of space for error.
Showing maybe how something could come from nothing, accidentally (if you will). Just a thought.

Thanks for creating this content. I had an experience where I became aware of a space that was more real than this one...it only lasted about 1 min but felt like I was there for years. Despite that, I do believe our essence is wise & wouldn't make the effort to be conscious here unless there was a purpose for it.

@@drkaushikt6926 Sure. I could feel myself losing my identity after using cannabis. I was scared but I was also fascinated. Then I became "disconnected" from my body. I entered a space that had timelines & my consciousness was trying to find my body. Maybe it was the 4th dimension...I'm not sure. On my channel, it is explained in the video "Timeless space". That world was complete peace & more real than this one. When I became conscious again, I was upset that I couldn't be there longer.

Is our body a VR device we wear to play earth game? I just wish this game was less painful and with less suffering ... not only for me, but also for others as seeing other people's pain and suffering makes me suffer too ...

Dr. Giulio Tononi is Professor of Psychiatry, Distinguished Professor in Consciousness Science, the David P. White Chair in Sleep Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Sleep and Consciousness. His laboratory studies consciousness and its disorders as well as the mechanisms and functions of sleep. Dr. Tononi’s main contribution in the study of consciousness has been the development of the integrated information theory. This is a comprehensive theory of what consciousness is, what determines its quantity and quality, and how it emerges from causal structures such as neural networks. The theory provides a parsimonious account of many neuropsychological observations, among them why certain parts of the brain give rise to experience and others do not, why consciousness vanishes during slow wave sleep and seizures despite continuing neural activity, and how unconscious processes interact with conscious ones. The theory has implications for the unfolding of consciousness across development and phylogeny, and predicts which ingredients are necessary and sufficient to construct sentient machines. With regard to the study of sleep, Dr. Tononi’s main contribution has been the development of a comprehensive hypothesis about the function of sleep, the synaptic homeostasis hypothesis. According to the hypothesis, sleep serves to renormalize synaptic strength, counterbalancing a net increase of synaptic strength due to plasticity during wakefulness. Without sleep, such progressive increase in synaptic strength would lead to unsustainable costs in terms of energy, space, cellular supplies, and would saturate the ability to learn. In short, sleep is the price to pay for plasticity during wakefulness
For VR we need some test like turing test that we have for robots.

I´ve been asking myself this question: supposed that we are actually, at this moment, living in 1 of an infinite number of simulations, competing against each other to get to a stable state of present: where are all these infinite simulations stored in this universal computer? The speed of light + quantized time & space do suggest that there´s an upper limit to the "CPU" running the simulation, but what about the memory? Also the memories & thoughts of every conscious being out there should also be saved somewhere, right? "Infinity" is a very irritating concept to grasp....

if you introduce simulation theory into the equation, and think of it as a sort of program "compiler" of all of the various laws of the universe, you could suddenly explain virtually everything in life that is hard to understand or believe relatively easily. The variables of our life could just be code, and the program execution could end up being the "grand unyifing theory" a sort of executable program of the specific code paramaters in the simulation that bring everything together and manifest consciouness. The master code writer ends up being "God" the creator, and our life expierence ends up being the net results of the specific code parameters. Which we would then percieve thru our thoughts as "reality".

The assumption that there is something rather than nothing is not quite right. There can be something and nothing simultaneously at the same time and place. It's like Shrodinger's cat but with only one observable state. We observe the something by chance, and the nothingness is not observable anyway, so here we are.

In a life before that I travelled further down the highway, maybe even to the next state, that I don't know. But after seeing my ends so many times, and seeing this sh!thole of a situation that I'm in again this time around I'm now trying to sit the rest of this out. Our lives simply play out over and over and over with only minor changes in this life from the last one. I have been homeless on the run far too many times. My family has been in danger far too many times. This life is not worth any amount of enlightenment nor 'God's 'grace'' if you ask me. It's like being made to eat sh!t (and die) only then to be promised a cupcake (that's likely full of sh!t).

The problem with the question of, "Are we in a simulation or not?" is similar to the question of whether god exists or not. It' a bit unfalsifiable and though fun to question and speculate IMO not the more important question to answer. Tom I think you think about this a lot but the simulation that matter to me is the one we create for ourselves through our nexus of perceptions about reality.
Whether we are in a simulation or in physical reality projecting our experience through consciousness arising from neuronic integration there is always an element of simulation. We never have a perfect knowledge of reality and we rely on constructs of reality called beliefs. Beliefs are the seemingly inevitable web of the matrix we build for ourselves through our interaction between consciousness and physical reality intercepting. I don't discount we might be in an actual simulation like virtual reality but we don't even need to be there in order to apply tools to transcend the matrix.
So, back to the point which is how do we transcend our beliefs better and know better should be our ultimate aim at the same time how do we construct an awesome experience. These two fundamental components will create a fulfilling and successful life. It could be said the reverse is true as well, that the primary aim should be to have a great experience if that is the fundamental true thing and beyond that striving to know more and operate within that knowing is secondary.

Therefore we are not conscience in a true sense but only conscience within the context of our limited existence. We might take this analogy to a spiritual level and come to the conclusion that only God is truly conscience and the only creator of this simulation. In this sense, it can no longer be a simulation (as we define “simulation”) and is therefore rendered as our only reality as we can not match the consciousness of God.

Why can't consciousness just be data? The storing and manipulation of data. When I think about what I am experiencing as consciousness it all comes down to data, everything, it's all data. You can even swap the two words 'consciousness' and 'data' in a sentence and it still means the same. I think consciousness is often mixed up with awareness of your surroundings and yourself. If you do not have awareness of yourself and your surroundings (like a laptop doesn't), then you are not conscious. I don't see that. Self awareness and awareness of your surroundings is just extra data, it's just a higher form of consciousness. I think we need to try to understand what it is like to BE something when it comes to consciousness. THIS (what we are all experiencing) is what it is like to BE a working human brain .... and I don't mean this is what it is like to be something else experiencing what it is like to be a human brain. There's not two of us, only one, just the brain, this is what it is like to BE a working human brain.
Non-dual(Advait) vedanta has dealt with the hard problem of consciousness thousands of years ago. I think considering consciousness as a product of mental processes is not going to lead anywhere. Instead thinking of consciousness as the fundamental reality might be a better path to take. As per Advaita anything that can be named is an object and is not our true nature and once one starts that process of elimination and what is left at the end is the subject and subject alone i.e; witness i.e; consciousness.

Maybe consciousness is the will, beyond automatic subconscious evolution driven biology, of which the sole purpose is to survive and reproduce, perhaps it’s the “will” that interacts and affects the outside world, molds it, sculpts it, creates it, and enjoys it. The will can only come from a sense of “I”, and the others, the outside world. A will to persist, to engage, to fight on despite all set backs, to love unconditionally, to express oneself. Consciousness is fundamental and OUTSIDE of space-time. The sooner that is accepted by more scientists the faster a viable theory can be produced. For a far better explanation (theory), check out the work of Dr Donald Hoffman. He and his team are on the cutting-edge of this particular science.

A simulation does NOT need to be 'indistinguishable from 'reality'' in order for our brains to buy into the authenticity of virtual stimuli. If you take a grainy 'photo' of a sunset, or your mother, or a bowl of cereal and encode it such that it matches the brainwaves for the 'reality' version of the same then your brain WILL accept and identify and identify with the stimuli provided as if it was not only real, but 'hi definition' as well even if it is the bare minimum quality to do so.
We have the technology to produce this 'acceptable' version of virtual reality now. We've already proven this. I believe we are living in a simulation, however, I am certain that we live in a multi-verse - that is, I know we are.
My question now is am I the only one here. Is this a dream of mine. Am I dead and this is an 'in-body' OBE. I am almost certain that there is a true reality outside of this existence. That may be heaven, but I believe heaven can be found here, so if we find heaven here do we awake in the real 'world'?
Whatever the ultimate reality is, I know we live this life over and over again, or at least I do.
To refute the virtual world is a real world argument that this guy is making, I have to cry BS. If this is a simulation then nothing here is truly real - nothing. Even most of our thoughts would then be simulated which would explain why we can't control our thoughts. But if this is the case, then there are only a few possible reasons for it. Either we are a source of entertainment, we are prisoners of a malevolent being, or our own race has us in here for the purpose of evolution.
We are all one god head who has been divided into every thing and everyone living out every life all at once to gain the totality of wizdom from every lived experience. One of us learns and lives a musicians life while another is a physicist. When everything has been learned we all die and the god head awakens as a wize creator. Everything is fractal and a reflection of self. We will eventually solve all problems and cure every disease. However we are not there yet. Recognize that your ideas and thought arrive often from elsewhere .
