  • Hello, and welcome to the second video of Tiny Fish, the "school" for newbie indie game devs. This time, I reflect on the 8 things I did that I feel helped get a lot of eyes on my simple casual game, Toe to Toe.

    adding achievements to your games is also a great way to increase player count. some people will only play a game if it has achievements, like achievement hunters.

      Great suggestion. I actually considered it, but didn't have an elegant cross-platform solution. May I ask what you're using so I can take a look when I explore achievements?

      ​@@TinyFishGameDev its actually a little different for each platform, but at the same time its very similar.
      For steam and google store you need to add the applicable api data to you actual game code.
      there is a lot great tutorials here on YT on both and how to implement them.
      i'd be glad to work with you and help you out if needed, do you have a discord or something i can join to make communicating a little easier?
      as for what i use, i mainly work over at retro achievements and the way we do it over there is very different than what is needed for modern gaming.

      I have actually tried Google Leaderboards and Achievements, I loved it and it was pretty straightforward to implement, but was kind of hoping for a cross-platform solution. Or would that not matter as much as cross-platform leaderboards?
      By the way, when you say retro achievements, do you mean retroachievements.org?

    Omg you made toe 2 toe. I loved that game huge inspiration. I’ve been learning Godot for the last year and even participated in some game jams since. Would love to hear more about your game dev journey.

      Oh wow! Pretty awesome to stumble on someone who played my game! Glad you loved it. Looking forward to seeing your creations, especially if I unknowingly played a small part in making it happen.
      By the way, how is Godot? I have been meaning to try it out for 3D stuff, but have not found the time to do so.

    brooooooooooo...this video slaps hard AF, are you me, it is alot of common sense stuff that you just dont think about, its really amazing you hit all the points, I decided that this year I was going to be more active on social media and how I can eventually advertise my game and this video was EXACTLY what I needed, Thank you sir

      Yeah, so many things are simple and should be common sense, but sometimes it doesn't really hit you as hard as when you hear it or even better, experience it.
      I wish you luck with your game and being more active on social media. Like I said on the video, it's difficult. It's definitely a plant your seed kind of thing, so you probably won't see impressive results soon. Put in the work though, and legit try to be part of the community. Don't be an annoying bot spammer. People sense when you're genuine, and it'll also be good for you--if you love game dev, not just your games, you'll learn a lot from and meet amazing people.
      I'm still working on social media myself, long way to go. But at least I've started. The best time to start after yesterday is today!

    Hey man i really appreciate this video
    I just started learning game dev and wanted to understand how publishing works since i wasn't confident if this would be worth it . And i found this video a real confidence boost.

      You're welcome. You might get different results--you could be more successful with your attempt, or maybe not. Some people do think that my mild success is still a failure because it's just pocket money, but I'm still pretty happy with the outcome. It's really hard to tell what is "worth it" and what is "success". Only one person can be the judge of that--you. After all, it's your time and effort that will be spent. My definition of success wasn't hinged on the money, but on people playing my game. I love games because it brings me happiness. My goal was to bring happiness to a bunch of people, make their day a little bit brighter. I still can't believe I was able to reach that goal.
      Game dev is extremely difficult, so you definitely need to temper expectations. I wish I could say I 100% know the secret formula and that things will be easy this point onwards, but that would be a lie. I'm almost as clueless as when I started, just a tiny bit wiser. What I do know is that had I not tried, I wouldn't have known my answer. So I suggest you try too. You decide if it's worth it after. If not, that's fine, at least you can say you tried.
      Don't beat yourself up too much, a lot of people will do that for you. Good luck!

    Wow, great video, you are really helping me out there, even though i have confidence problems, just listening you and you experiences makes me want to work harder and finish my game.
    You gave me some good first, second and third steps out there.
    What do you think about visual novel games?
    Im looking for a game that simulates fighting experience through visual novel (it is easier for me as i first learned to program at JavaScript)
    Also, the quality is amazing, audio and animations, everything, great work

      Thanks, I'm starting to get more comfortable with youtube, video editing, and also hating my voice less. You're welcome too, always glad to help out.
      For visual novel games, I'm not too familiar with them because I haven't played much of those, but I do know that it has a market. Try to look for communities that are into visual novel games. They can give you better insights and suggestions for your game, and they can also support you if they see and like what you're doing.

      Haha I might have accidentally stumbled on a captured audience when I chose to make the character female. Some people who liked my tweet were into buff women who box, didn't expect something so specific. In any case, I'm just glad people appreciate and play my game. I hope you enjoy it too!

      You can!
      1) Keep practicing and studying pixel art and animation principles
      2) Watch and observe lots of boxing and mma videos
      3) Study good video game animations with punches
      3) Use yourself as a reference. Get a mirror and imitate the punches of the pros. Ignore looking like an idiot shadow boxing. When you understand the movement, experiment with exaggeration.
      4) Cry and throw up (From the physical exercise and getting sick of studying pixel art and animation)
      5) Repeat

    Hi, thanks for the video, what engine are you using to create games now? Construct or Unity ?)

      I use Construct 3 for 2D games, which is where it excels. It being lightweight and available on mobile is a big plus for me, since it allows me to work anywhere.
      Unity isn't exactly in my radar at the moment. I gave it a try several times, but always found it too big/ bloated. I know it's very capable, and I might revisit it when making 3d games, but I'm somewhat leaning towards Godot for that because it's also lightweight . Also, the whole Unity fiasco recently doesn't help. It's not a knock on Unity, I think it depends on the person's preference/comfort level, and what the person is trying to achieve.
      What engine do you use?
