    Really cool video, I’m curious what happened around late jan/early feb 2023? All 3 graphs have a spike in views around this time, was it something on your end or something itch did?

      Late Jan is when my post went viral on reddit, so it's probably that. I don't know if itchio also contributed to the traffic. It is possible that after getting some traffic, itchio added to the attention by maybe putting it on the popular section. If I remember correctly, a fellow jam member mentioned my game at the time was in featured in a section at the bottom, but not the main feature.

    To start and get some views on itch, do you think that it is better to publish games to play in the browser or games to download and execute on your system?

    • @TinyFishGameDev
      @TinyFishGameDev 3 месяца назад

      Definitely! People are very impatient and often won't download stuff, especially for a simple game from a random unknown dev and there is a risk of downloading a virus/trojan. Maybe if you've established yourself, then this wouldn't matter as much. If there is a web version, my trust goes up a bit. If I like the game, that's the time I download executables. My browser plays are significantly higher than downloads. Also, a web version works on mobile, so major points for those who make their game mobile ready/playable. When I'm out and bored, I look for games to play on my phone/tablet. Obviously, I have to skip those that I can't play, and that's a missed opportunity.

    • @eloctopusmakesgames
      @eloctopusmakesgames 3 месяца назад

      @TinyFishGameDev 3 месяца назад

      @eloctopusmakesgames you can also offer a demo (a level or something) if you like, especially if you have a very large game or a paid product. However, if your engine doesn't offer web output, I think it might be better to look for alternative ways to gain users instead of having to rewrite everything.

      Don't wait, as Nike says, just do it! Won't go smooth for sure (like how my first vid had sound coming off only one channel), but you learn from it. The sooner you start, the sooner you can improve. As for the sprites for Toe to Toe, I used both Pixly(android, free) and Aseprite(desktop, paid). Just in case you're on a budget, you can compile aseprite from source, or you can use libresprite(an earlier fork of aseprite that's free).

    • @TinyFishGameDev
      @TinyFishGameDev 5 месяцев назад

      You're welcome. You might get different results--you could be more successful with your attempt, or maybe not. Some people do think that my mild success is still a failure because it's just pocket money, but I'm still pretty happy with the outcome. It's really hard to tell what is "worth it" and what is "success". Only one person can be the judge of that--you. After all, it's your time and effort that will be spent. My definition of success wasn't hinged on the money, but on people playing my game. I love games because it brings me happiness. My goal was to bring happiness to a bunch of people, make their day a little bit brighter. I still can't believe I was able to reach that goal. Game dev is extremely difficult, so you definitely need to temper expectations. I wish I could say I 100% know the secret formula and that things will be easy this point onwards, but that would be a lie. I'm almost as clueless as when I started, just a tiny bit wiser. What I do know is that had I not tried, I wouldn't have known my answer. So I suggest you try too. You decide if it's worth it after. If not, that's fine, at least you can say you tried. Don't beat yourself up too much, a lot of people will do that for you. Good luck!

      @@jellycode4949 Yeah, for sure it won't happen overnight. Like I said, it's extremely difficult, and if you're starting just starting, money shouldn't be your primary objective, or you're going to be disappointed real quick. Try to enjoy the journey, because it's going to be long/seemingly endless. I took a look at your game trailer, and I think the graphics could still use some improvements. Try to play a lot games, study their UI and graphics. Watch tutorials too, there are lots out there. Another thing you can explore is to use premade assets. There are free and high-quality game assets available for download such as Kenney's. Being a solo game dev needs you to be a jack of all trades, and trying to level up from scratch in multiple disciplines is tough. Using premade assets can help you level up in the other aspects of the game (e.g. programming side). Study the assets that you use too. Eventually, if you decide to create everything from scratch, you'll be able to put more focus since you don't have to focus as much on the programming side.

    adding achievements to your games is also a great way to increase player count. some people will only play a game if it has achievements, like achievement hunters.

      Great suggestion. I actually considered it, but didn't have an elegant cross-platform solution. May I ask what you're using so I can take a look when I explore achievements?

      @@TinyFishGameDev its actually a little different for each platform, but at the same time its very similar. For steam and google store you need to add the applicable api data to you actual game code. there is a lot great tutorials here on YT on both and how to implement them. i'd be glad to work with you and help you out if needed, do you have a discord or something i can join to make communicating a little easier? as for what i use, i mainly work over at retro achievements and the way we do it over there is very different than what is needed for modern gaming.

      I have actually tried Google Leaderboards and Achievements, I loved it and it was pretty straightforward to implement, but was kind of hoping for a cross-platform solution. Or would that not matter as much as cross-platform leaderboards? By the way, when you say retro achievements, do you mean retroachievements.org?
