      @@SimonHytte Very fair! I started using it some time ago to try and make my own project. Godot is definitely one of the nicer ones I've tried. (admittedly, I never actually used unity before outside of importing VRchat avatars when that was new and exciting)
      But yeah, I was already uninterested in Unity when they merged with a company that literally shipped malware, and then the CEO insulted developers for not wanting ads and microtransactions in their games.
      Hopefully I find the time and energy to use Godot some more!

Something that helped me was Unreal Engine because their visual scripting, Blueprints, is a lot less intimidating to learn than code is haha. You can also make full games with Blueprints and never write a single line of "code".
      Also, I recently have been learning the Godot Engine and I have to say, GDScript is way easier to learn than I thought it would be. I'm not sure if it is because after doing Bluprints for a while I can think more in a coders mindset now instead of just visually, or if it is just the coding language being easier but I highly recommend checking out both of them!

      @ 12 to 14 years it was all good fun at the time :)
      I like most old school adventure games, but (don't laugh) favorite is always "Breakout" especially DXBall V1.9 (Windows)
      I have a very large collection of classic games dating back to about 1978 :)
      Mostly Windows, DOS, and BASIC for the 6502 ( OSI 1P and 4P, Commodore and Amstrad)
      There are a small collection of public domain retro games out there. Some commercial games have released the source code into the open source or public domain. Many have been converted to the newer Win and Linux 64 platforms.
      I made a bit of a vertical space shooter using SDL-BGI (graphics.h). It was fun but it's not finished. SDL-BGI was made to convert old DOS games so it has slow downs built in, which can be difficult to work around. I'll redo it in Allegro5 when I get time and maybe polish it up and finish it.

    • @xchronox0
      @xchronox0 2 месяца назад +1

      probably because the rest of them don't really market themselves at all, and typically only exist for in-house projects with some of them allowing other people to use them.
      then there's also not-really-game-engines like some html5 frameworks and such.
      some other notable engines for anyone reading this though would be love2d (which uses lua), and renpy (for visual novels).
      i can't really think of any notable 3d engines that aren't godot, unreal, or unity.
      you can do 3d in gamemaker, but it's definitely not recommended, especially because you have to implement your own model importing, code to turn that into something that can render, and then if you wanna actually do the making a game part, you'd need to spin up your own 3d editor too.
      then some less notable ones but definitely do exist... torque3d/torque2d, superpowers and it's predecessor craft studio, serious engine 1 (2 and so on are not available to the public), source 1 (2 not available to the public)
      these are either very out of date, or are otherwise lacking enough features that it's not really worth using them

I think Unity is the most shameful engine ever that has now reached a point where they are spitting every developer to the face but also has branched on so many parts that is worse than Unreal for 3D games and worse than Godot for development. I think Godot is the best option for any indie dev looking to make a game right now, and I can only see the engine improving with time.

    I think you shouldn't pick and engine just because, not being good at coding or so... knowing about coding its absolutely needed for making games, there is not other way... even if some engines makes coding easy, that has serious consequences in performance and scalability.. which is ok for simplest games, but.. in the future you will aim for biggest games that requires strong coding skills.

    • @SimonHytte
      @SimonHytte  3 месяца назад +2

      i agree!!! there are a lot of faucets of game development that need to be considered and coding is the train everything else rides on. ^•ᴥ•^
      I do think the engine choice should reflect you as a person, and what your strengths and weakness are though. Like legit choosing gamemaker for people who don't like to code is a nice way to simplify this part, same with the project scope & game genre. Should you be making a MMO RPG if you don't even like to code? the answer is no i think. if you need an example of this in practice, undertale for example has spaghetti code that runs on gamemaker hahaha.
      so to simplify my answer, choose engine & games based on what u like doing, or maybe invite someone else to fill in that weakness of yours. Nobody is perfect in everything and I think that's why indie games are awesome. but that's just a mere dog's opinion ≧◠ᴥ◠≦
