Have you considered using sleet storm/bigsby's hand in conjunction with control water to drown opponents?

Tiefling - Levistus (Mordenkainen's Tomb of Foes) +2 Cha, +1 Con - Legacy of Stygia - Ray of Frost, 3rd Armor of Agathys (2nd), 5th Darkness. Seems to have good synergy with the spell list

I played the UA Version of this. I want to tell a story of an example of something you can do with this subclass:
This subclass is *horrifying* underwater. The Lance of Lethargy and Grasp of Hadar invocations suit this subclass really well. Here is an example of something you can pull: My Fathomless Warlock was at the bottom of a deep pool, in a very dark room (she has Devil's Sight). She had cast Hallucinatory Terrain to make the pool look like a solid floor, so several enemies members fell in. She then used control water to make a whirlpool, which makes the water even more difficult to swim through and pulls people down every turn. Then she used her Eldritch Blast to slow people down and drag them even more. She additionally used the Tentacle of the Depths to slow down foes that were passing their strength saves against the Control Water. This mean they were being pulled down 20 feet per turn and only had a swim speed of 5 feet if they passed a strength save (and they couldn't move away at all if they failed). And she could safely do all of this from deep underwater, out of sight, out of reach. I am not sure of many things that can survive that without using teleportation, and it is up to the DM's discretion if the Verbal components (such as the ones used in dimension door) are even performable underwater (Which wouldn't be an issue for the Fathomless Warlock as they have that ability to speak properly underwater). You can also pull something somewhat similar on land using Evard's Black Tentacles, although your positioning will have to me more careful and it won't be as effective (but it will still most likely nearly immobilize many foes).
If you are playing a campaign where you might have battles near water, and if you are fighting foes that can't necessarily breathe water, the Fathomless can be terrifying.
Oh, and you can use upcasted Create/Destroy Water repeatedly to make ponds for your Control Water and your Fathomless Plunge, and seeing as you regain those slots on a short rest, given time, you can easily make large bodies of water.
    I love this subclass.

That sounds horrific to fight against and great fun to play. Your not the first person to suggest grasp of hadar, it seems to work really well. Good tip about the summon water.

That’s a spicy idea, slowing everything to a grinding halt and letting swashbucklers and monks dip in and out of melee range. Sounds like an interesting challenge for a DM To facilitate.

Dude your videos are really pleasant and chill. Love the style! I would appreciate some more specific build suggestions on your class videos though, but keep it up! I'm pretty sure you could grow an audience with this awesome presentation style. A lot of other content producers for D&D are just plain exhausting or annoying to listen to. I could listen to you all day.

C- for me, this subclass is ‘okay.’ The tentacle is what the class revolves around and it’s largely disappointing, a bonus action d8 at low levels is nice and the 10ft speed reduction is great, at low levels. By the time your getting to level ten 2d8 cold and a ten feet speed reduce might as well be a light scratch to most if not all monsters, and the coil ability is okay, 2d8 damage reduction can be the difference from being knocked up or being up for that attack, then you slapped again and your down and that’s if you roll well on the dice. Grasping is neat and EBT is a pretty good spell, it’s a fine ability the temp HP could be better. And plunge is disappointing, if it had the same range at teleport I’d call it game breaking, cause 1 mile ain’t jack shit. Overall, disappointing though gift of the sea is cool, can’t complain about that one.

    • @leohale6449
      @leohale6449 3 года назад +2

Of course you need to remember that most people never get past level 10 in a game anyway, so it is not the huge disappointment most would believe.

@@leohale6449 with disappointing abilities in 3rd tier play like this one, I can’t blame people for dipping out. My friends and I play to 20 usually but I can’t see myself going all the way to 20 on this. Hex blade maybe but not this. It should’ve kept its capstone ability from the UA. At least the teleport was better and being able to do damage with the maw was a cool idea. Had some actual versatility.

Pairs well with Mercer's Paladin of the Open Seas, and/or Aberrant Mind Sorcerer.

I think you guys are under rating this drastically. The tentacle is the equivalent or better to Spirit Weapon, a 2nd level spell. It doesn't add spell mod to damage, but it has grater reach, 30ft move speed, and a slow effect. On top of that it isn't a level spell, so you can cast a normal spell on the same turn. Not to mention it will trigger Hex damage.
The tentacle slow + lance of lethargy + repelling blast + hunger of hadar/ EBT mean that you can slow a targets by -10- 20ft and then halve the remaining due to rough terrain, all while knocking them back into the radius. And while targets are in there, they are blinded meaning anyone on your team with dark vision has advantage and anyone without it has normal rolls (blindness cancels not being able to see them RAW).
The slows, the knock backs, and the the blindness all are automatic, there is no save throw, there is no size maximum, not even legendary resistances matter.
Sadly though, I see no reason to not just go 2 levels fathomless and put the rest into aberrant mind sorc.

I wish it was you guys, it’s just me making the videos 😂
Upon further research the multiple methods to inflict slow make this subclass a great map control option and there are some pretty juicy combos like you mentioned.

"Sea hag covens"... so if I can use 3 9th level spell slots for planar binding and the conjur woodland beings spell... I could make myself a servant patron... good. About time. I'd prefer a bond with a pixies involving having to prank people if it were available but this is much better.

lurker in the deep was better. they completely ruined it in my opinion and the name is way worse.
they really said "hmm LITD is best in water but still usable on land. lets make it completely useless on land and then make it barely usable underwater."

There was 30+ new subclasses in Tasha’s and I don’t think they could all be home runs. The problem with subclasses is that they can be good isolated but if you compare them in the games ecosystem it’s hard to balanced them all equally.
