When My baby showers happened, there weren't gift bags, however I used the wrapping paper for their drawers, also. I cut a 6" slit in the back of the Mylar balloons and stuffed them w/ tissue paper. Cut the balloon ribbon short and hung three high on the wall above the changing table. Easy to wipe the dust off; stayed bright and the boys loved looking at them. When they became more agile, I simply took them down for safety and put up a picture.
Hi, Just last week I was at the Dollar Tree and saw 2 of the prettiest XL gift bags with gorgeous outdoor Christmas scenes. I bought them solely with the plan to cut out that scene and frame them. So glad I did- they make me smile every time I look at them. I LOVE your placemat idea - especially for kids birthday parties - will save buying a new tablecloth for every party.
For the triangles for the garland, I would use a second holiday on the back like Thanksgiving with Christmas make it reversible. It takes up less space to store.
I reused several Christmas bags for going on 20 years now. They’ll probably outlast me. And they’ve saved me so many thousands of hours of wrapping gifts. I can’t imagine why anyone would be so wasteful as to just throw them out.
@SoundofSilence492 - I save gift bags and reuse them, too. One year I forgot to sign a birthday card to my sister (we actually share a birthday, but 2 years apart). I was surprised when she gave it back to me the next year, still unsigned! We've reused that same card for at least 25 years! My mom is 93, but she was a 'conservationist' long before the term became popular. She doesn't believe in cluttering the landfills with single use items, either.
@@SharonPerson-hm9ds That is so funny! The exact same thing happened with my Mama & her twin sister! It became a running joke between them for several years -- sending that same card back & forth! They would be 91 years old now, if they were still with us.
@susanking3974 - I'm so sorry that your mom and aunt are no longer with you.💔 My sister & I know how blessed we are to have our mom. She still lives in her own home, drives, and will go out to shovel, or snow blow, her driveway if someone doesn't beat her to it. She's what they call a 'Sturdy New England Yankee', as her dad was before her. He passed away the month before his 105th birthday, and his brother passed at 103. Lots of longevity in her family.
These are fun ideas! My whole family reuses bags from any occasion. Then if we we a really beautiful or fun one or two, we add them in to replace any overly used ones. When they are in very good condition, I also donate them to programs collecting and giving Christmas presents out in the community. Some programs allow parents to select gifts from new donated items. Then they can choose wrapping paper or bags along with them. My mother-in-law always bought the daughters in-laws something lovely from Nordstrom. She would get their boxes...we all reused those boxes for YEARS!!! 😄
I reused mine for years and I finally got so tired of them and/or the children grew up and I didn't have a use for the ones for little ones. I used one bag to store the others that I wanted to get rid of. I left them by the front door and then when friends and family would visit I would let them know they were available to take. They sure didn't sit there very long. Also did the same with the small number of cards I had left over from multiple boxes. I did the same with birthday bags as well.
Love all these projects Deidre. You’ve shown us some great ideas. Even quite a few that I used to make when I was a lot younger. Thanks for bringing back some deep seated memories that my old brain had forgotten about. There’s quite a few that some of my grandkids and I can do together. Have a great weekend Deidre.
Yes, that's one reason I really like these ideas - you can do them with kids to show them how to make something from what might otherwise be thrown away.
Delightful!! all of them! I made a junk journal from a cereal box n used a gift bag to cover it,in a way that the cord handles of the gift bag could be tied up to keep the journal closed. Wish I could explain better🥹
I've stopped using regular 'gift' bags altogether. When looking for a bag to put a gift in, I now look at something that can be used to carry groceries home. We have to pay for bags in Australia (and they're almost all now made of paper) or bring your own. Before this was introduced, I'd actually given family members a set of reusable (nice ones, not yukky) fabric shopping bags that fold up neatly to carry in your handbag. I've found that these types of bags are now so widely available that their cost compares well to buying a gift bag. For Christmas upcoming, I've bought felt bottle bags since I've made some lighted bottles with designs (from good, glass recycled bottles). So everyone's getting a reusable felt bag; a couple of lanterns; and a bunch of handmade accessories. You can't help what others give you though!
A friend has always used fabric to wrap gifts... could be leftover, worn out clothing or kitchen towels that can be used for their intended purpose after the holiday.
I do that too when I can find a generic bag that doesn't have the stores emblem on them I really wish they would just make bags that are holiday themed they are so much sturdier ( here ours is made out of heavy plastic or sturdy cloth) they will last a long long time. Anna In Ohio
I use my old Christmas cards and make them into name tags for gifts. Sometimes I use the whole front of the card or I cut around certain pictures on the front of the card. Make sure there is no writing on the back. Use a hole puncher near top and attach ribbon. Plenty of room on the back to write stuff.
My Grandmother taught me this trick. She lived to 98! I've done it for years. Some of the cards are just too beautiful to throw away. I tie a lot of my own bows, some years the goal is to have something different on every pkg.!
You have great ideas! I would like to share an idea to make a garland. Use previous year's Christmas 🎄 Cards or even find Christmas Cards at thrift stores. I make a template of a Christmas tree 🎄, place the middle of the card on pattern. Cut out 'card trees', punch holes, add baker's twine, thin ribbon, etc. Then hang the Christmas garland over a door or on the Christmas tree. Also, for templates, I make different types of Christmas trees, for different garlands.
love love love the gift tags & book marks.. have many small bags on hand that were useless until I saw your video. thanks for the inspiration.. you are one clever lady.
This has nothing to do with Christmas but works wonders. Tired of having to buy a new address book and updating every couple of years? Well, I ended up with several empty photo albums. The 3 ring binders that will hold 3 x 5 cards. I put one address on a 3 x 5 card and put the cards, in alphabetical order, in the photo album with several empty spaces in between. Now I can make changes on the 3 x 5 cards. When too many changes, on that card, just put a new 3 x 5 card in replacing that address. You can add and delete addresses and don't have to buy anymore new address books and don't have to spend days re-copying😮 everything.
😊 Great answer! I am making patchwork bags to gift Brownies in a jar and Smaller bags for my homemade vanilla extract. I have been brewing it for two month now. So love your idea to make small bags from the wine gift bags. They won't take much time to create. ❤
I would like to make a suggestion on the triangle garland, anytime you put holes in paper, if you put the hole reinforcement tabs on the back your garland will last longer
I am sewing patchwork drawstring bags for brownies and cookie mix in a jar. REUSING the jars and now I can use those bags I had been saving too! Loved your card idea for the ingredients and how to bake. Thanks for sharing! ❤😊❤
Another one for the brown paper bags is to make “leatherette” for costumes and crafts. Crumple the bag repeatedly, add light crayon streaks of brown or black, then rub it all over with a stick of beeswax or paraffin, repeat the crumpling maneuver and another layer of wax. I learned that from a home decor show in the early 90’s 😂
I've turned some into magnets by gluing onto a magnet sheet. One was a beautiful translucent snowy scene so I hung it on a suction cup hook on the window.

Instead of making or buying a card, I make a flat ornament instead. I use air drying clay to make the shape. Then I either paint or design something for the front of the disc. I write my message and the year on the back. You can use ready-made ceramic discs or get the timber ones, of course. I top it off with a small string of beads and some pretty ribbon.

Thanks for watching!
I like all of your ideas, but especially enjoy making garlands from gift bags and old Christmas cards.
Garlands are my favorite! 😄
SO HAPPY to see you doing a crafty video!! I was afraid you were going to start doing only podcasts. 😢 Watching you create stuff is WAY more fun than podcasts!! 😊
