This video is worth it alone for the tip about sliding another wrench into the end of the first for more leverage. I've always used a long pipe and put it over the wrench but this is a way better and more readily available option. Thanks a ton!
Well I’ve had an issue with the alternator not charging, I changed the alternator, changed the battery, cleaned all the grounds and checked all the fuses and relays and watched a shit ton of videos and was on a bunch of ford forms , so pissed at not finding the issue after 3 days We just sitting in the garage watching random Ford videos came across yours but watching it go towards down there we were talking about the green and red wire running up to the start of the annoyed and realized my wire did not run up there what is in a wire run it up there and now it’s charging again, So thank you for the video
Question: I have a 1986/1987 L6 300 (Depending on what parts I need) and I paid some idiot to change my alternator because I didn't have the time. Well, when I bought the truck it had been rewired by the previous owner. Well dumb dumb changed the alternator and connected the power wire at the bottom, but left the 3 wires capped off. I cannot find where to land the three bottom wires. one is two are black #10's and one is a white 18 gauge. so right now my battery is not charging at all. Where are those wires supposed to land? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I would put the pigtails on. Only say this because we got my son a cool 1992 Ford flareside pickup and drove it home literally the first time after we took it to a mechanic and had it checked out. Glad it didn't catch on fire when we didn't own it yet. We stopped in his school friends driveway because they were outside. Sitting there talking and smoke started coming out from under the hood. Jumped out and cracked the hood. The alternator/wires were on fire! They had a fire extinguisher handy and we put it out, but now we have to replace the burned plug and pigtails, alternator etc. Hope this helps others. Good video! Thanks! I don't know what the 3g is. His is a 1992. Are they be interchangeable?

Ok thx. I have 1990 Ford F150 5.0 xlt lariat long bed. The Chilton repair manual says Pivot bolt 58 ft ibs Adjusting bolt 25 ft ibs wire terminal nuts 60-90 inch ibs. My top bolt is very short maybe 2 inches and the bottom bolt is about 5 inches long. Is the bottom bolt the pivot or adjusting bolt? I thought the top bolt was the pivot bolt.
Ok thx. Which bolt should be tightened to 58 ft ibs and which bolt at 25 ft ibs? Please reply top bolt __ and bottom bolt __. I tightened the top bolt at 58 ft ibs. If iys suppose to be at 25 ft ibs should i loosen it then retorque at 25 ft ibs? I think I made mistake. Thank you for your response I truly appreciate it.
@@TheFSeries youre lucky your connector hasnt melted or warped like mine. I'm going through hell right now trying to splice the new connector wires. It's a fairly easy install just the wiring that throws things off. (Update) it’s spliced and good to go

@@TheFSeries thank you so much! I am literally three wires away from completing this vehicle and I'm ready to pull my hair out! I should have done it myself, but the guy needed money and I figured he couldn't screw it up. He proved me wrong...... But at least he earned some money for his family.
Get rid of that 2 g fire hazzard ,the 3g is a direct fit . The 95 amp 3g also uses the same belt as the 2g . The large case 130 amp and larger uses a different belt. The wiring changes are also easy. That damn 2g is a waste of money! Just ask for a 1995 alternator, the 4.9 300 has mounting provisions for the 95 amp or the larger 130 and up alternator. That 75 amp 2g doesn't produce enough power and runs way hotter than the higher amp 3g's. I used the large case 130 amp on my 88 4.9 f150. No more power problems ,like slow wipers etc! They will also fit the v8 engines .
damn I wish i would've saw this before I bought a 2g. I'm currently in the process of splicing the wiring harness because the old one from 1991 (I'm convinced) melted/warped into the old alternator its not problem to do but It's still a fire hazard risk. I had to knock mine out with a hammer cause it was so rusty haha
I finally upgraded to the 3g up in Idaho while on a trip to Washington when the 2g crapped out again, i think i was on my 6th alternator at that point. The guy at the alternator shop is the one who suggested the 3g. At that time i didn't even know the 3g existed lol.
Carquest no longer carries that part. Checked September 23rd, 2024. As a matter of fact.... don't give ANY part store your old alternator as a core. You're going to be needing it. Edit: the junkyard is running out of them too.
not simple. I had to remove the radiator to remove the lower bolt with an air gun. This was the original alternator and the lower bold was not stainless like the upper bolt.

Definitely not OSHA approved but hey...It works.
Just beware that if it breaks, you'll definitely be in for a ride.
Thanks, my son got an alternator somewhere and it came with pigtails, so that's cool. Works great. Great video!
The tip about the bottom bult is awesome

Glad to help!
You and this videos producer are obviously very, very intelligent 😑
Thanks for making this video!

Thanks. I also like your battery strap. Ill use that too .
1994 was the first year for the 3g
Im getting ready to swap alt but my question is the alt plug at the 2 oclock or 10 oclock posistion. The prts stores r callin out either or

3G is a more efficient alternator. Just google "3G Swap" and you'll find tons of info on it!
Tk'z bro very helpful for first timers.like me🤣✌

Where is the pivot bolt located on the top or bottom of the alternator mounting bracket hole? Thx anyone who can help
Bottom of the alternator
Top bolt is what secures it in place

any update on how its working for you?
Worked until I parked the truck for other issues.
No complaints about the performance of the Alternator though

I'll do a video over this, as it's a very good topic.
Thanks for the input/question!

I completely agree.
That 1992 F150 is getting redone as a 1992 F150 4x4 trail rig.

I had one of those alternators almost burn my truck up in the Walmart parking lot.
+Steve Stoltz Yep, 2G alternators are fire hazards
But I didn't have the money for a $180-225 3G to upgrade
Trust me, I wish.
+Steve Stoltz Yeah, 2G Alternators are a fire hazard.
Wanted a 130amp 3G but it woupd have been double the cost.
And I'm poor

Yeah, I plan on a 3G ASAP
I was forced to use what was available both physically and financially
Yeah, Ive been there.
11v isn't charging that's battery voltage

Breaker bars exist btw
