There are so many great stories about Bobby Orr, and heres another, when the Bruins use to be on the road, the guys would ask Orr what does he want to do after the game, he would tell them "Lets go see some kids in the hospital" heres a 20 something super star, the best hockey player in the world and he always had time for the kids!! he is was and always will be the best!
I was lucky enough to see Bobby play, and remember as a little guy in Ontario listening to my radio in bed, which could pick up Bruins games if it was a clear night. He was a class act then, and has continued to be ever since. The best hockey player ever with all due respect to Wayne Gretzky.
+Norm Williams I too was very young when Bobby played, but I remember the mass hysteria from Boston-area fans as it related to Orr and those "Big Bad Bruins" teams. A bunch of characters, as they were as talented as they were wild. But, even to this day, with as many absolute titans as Boston sports teams have produced (e.g. Orr, Tom Brady, Pedro Martinez, Larry Bird, Bill Russell, Ted Williams, David Ortiz, etc.), nobody was/is as beloved as Bobby. As great as Orr was as a player, he's an even better person. I hate to even imagine HOW depressed the Greater Boston area will be when Bobby passes on, because even after all these years, he's still God-like to a LOT of ppl.
My hero is Terry Fox. If you are Canadian, you will never forget him. If American, you never heard of him. Anyhow. Bobby was Terry Fox's idol. Like most Canadians then, and now. Bobby went out of his way to meet Terry during the run, encourage and help elevate the Terry Fox run. Truly a great gentleman. All the respect for Robert Gordon Orr I can possible muster. His hockey skills are noting compared to his personal skills.
I am born and raised in Boston and heard alot of stories about his charity Orr would do without any fanfare, usually athletes this great arent this humble. He changed the game, especially for Defensemen, who before Orr would score 3 to 5 goals a SEASON. It would be like a MLB. Pitcher winning the homerun and batting title, unheard of but Bobby Orr did.
Old Time hockey players (I would consider any player pre-Gretzky in that category) are the best people. Having run across so many in my lifetime, along with watching so many videos/film of them, has been a treat. Mr. Orr is at the top among them. Only OT hockey player I ever met that was gruff was Maurice Richard. After what he went through, during his career, I give him the benefit of doubt.
@@barrykennedy4282 Messi has quietly done more for charity than any athlete in history. Crook? Because he let someone else deal with his income and tax? To me Orr is the greatest ever but truth is the truth.
Would take a team of Orr’s over a team of Gretzky’s any day !! When you lead the league in scoring and your voted the Best defenseman in the same year , that’s the guy I’d take hands down. Even Gretzky said it himself. Bobby Orr is the greatest player of all time.
I asked Fran Huck who the best player was and without hesitation he ssid Bobby Orr. Valeri Kharlemov was a close second. Fran played in the NHL for a number of years. I skate on my ankles. I'll take his word for it.
@@Cavalier1025 the reason bobby was so much better than howe gretzky lemeux is because he skated so good he made everybody look as if they eere skating on tjier ankles.
Kid Poker with all due respect to 99 let him have 12 knee operations over 10 years. He was constantly being hammered in the knees. If Orr played 20 years in a watered down league like Gretzky and never got hurt , he could have led the league in scoring countless times and won countless Norris trophy’s. Gretzky himself said Orr was the Best overall player ever. Period.
Apples and oranges my friend. In my opinion, The Great One WAS...but was overrated. Orr isn't given as much credit as he deserves. I'd take 4 before 99.
What a legend. God bless Bobby Orr.
A GREAT person. A GREAT player.
To have had Wiiliams and Yaz. Bird and Russell, Brady AND Bobby Orr...wow.
What a class act! - Not many people I can truly say I would love to meet, but Robert Gordon Orr is definitely one if them- Rick Ferencik

W G is the greatest goal scorer ever, but Bobby O is the greatest hockey player. E-V-E-R
What a fantastic gentleman!

Hockey was always about skill and speed, not fighting. Orr's the greatest, because he's all three!
Greatest d man ever.
The greatest guy ever. I can't think of an athlete of his caliber who is so sincerely modest and gracious. Not even Messi.
Mark Woldin Messi? The footballer? As good as he is, he’s a crook. Orr is definitely classy but so was Gretzky...equally so.

99 gets the nod 20 seasons vs 8 seasons its sad he only played 8 but those are the facts
