I really appreciate how you jump right into your process, without all of the intro fluff and explanation about why one would want an Inlay Opal ring! Thanks for a good quality video. Also like the HF lathe, been eyeing one for a couple of years. Now I have a good reason to get one.

Loved the way you did this. Seemed really fast doing it with your fingers as opposed to a mandrel. Might try it, as I get glue on my fingers anyway.

@@DreamwoodRings sorry possible some dumb questions but I have never used a resin. With the uv resin you used in this video, you mention a uv bath, what is that, a light? Did the resin you used require a uv light to dry? Does it the ring stay on the lathe until dry, how long would a ring like your take to dry with or w/o light? Cant one use a epoxy resin and get the same look? Sorry i missed your previous video on the clear coat! Beautiful ring by the way.
@@laurielahr1022 Hey there! The resin is called AlumiUV from a company called Alumilite. It is a resin that is only cured with a 365nm Uv light. With out the light this resin would never cure. You could try regular resin, but that would be extremely hard considering bubbles and dry time.
Great ring and a great video. I have just 1 question and one comment.
Q: why do you go out of your way up to buffing the ring before adding the UV-resin? Shouldn't the resin fill in any gaps anyway, resulting in a even finish?
C: I personally would've enjoyed seeing the finished ring for a few seconds in the end

The buffing before the finish may not be needed, however it does help the stones shine even better. I agree though it is probably not needed!

I have used a Mortar and pestle, but get better results with an anvil and hammer. Some folks make one with metal piping!
Hi great video! Question: can the center resin/inlay material be removed later and repaired, say if a scratch or crack needed to be repaired?
Thank you, yeah you can always remove the outer finish if needed!

That would be a wood lathe. The cheapest option I think might be harbor freight.
What kind of clear coat are you using at the end?
This one is a UV curing resin. I also use CA finish as well in many other rings.
How would it work if you used the ashes and CA glue in a channel ring?
I have personally not done ashes. However I have seen it done and it seems like any other material you would inlay. Thanks for watching!

Great vid! i didnt listen on volume as its late but im wondering did you hit the metal when you were filing? i worry ill need to buff an polish the metal afterwards and thats new territory for me! i would have no idea how to get it back to that shine. I also us 2 part resin not UV. So my rotation device wont be a drill but a turn table for a slower longer time. Tricky stuff! Ive done the center part but worried about the final resin bit. Any advice appreciated hugely :)
Hey I do touch the metal ring as it is important to clear off any resin or finish from the metal. From there I just give it a quick sanding up the the highest grit I have and finishing off with wax polish.
I’m think about putting a crushed Opal inlay on my electric guitar project but I don’t know anything about that how should I go about doing it?

In this video we were using a UV curing resin. Our latest videos we have been using a CA glue finish.
Do you mind me asking where you got the mortar and pestle? Is it stainless steel?
We just got it from Amazon! But have found since this video we prefer a hammer and anvil with something to put over the stones.

I'd guess you have air bubbles in the inlay, when you sand it is getting dirty in the tiny holes.
What kind of resin do you use?
Sometimes I use alumiUv resin from alumilite and sometimes just an off brand from Amazon.

CA = Cyanoacrylate
it's basically a family of adhesives usually marketed as super-glue etc.

Ar first, amazing work! Do you sand the space where you put the Opal to glue it? Do you use the UV for every layer or only at the end? It will work also with natural stone? Thank you:)
Hey there! You can sand the channel if it is a metal that can be scratched up. I only use the resin on the last as a finish, and it would work with any type of stones. 😁
And which glue is it at the first steps? I dont get this type of resin in Austria do you know a other option or is every UV resin possible, thanks for your answer:)
@@freireiter29freireiter8 I use a thick glue on the first step to out large pieces in first, followed by tiny/dust pieces with a thin glue. You could also use the CA glue as a finish. Any type of UV resin would work all the same as well!
What kind of lathe is used for the finishing process?

You could yeah, when I first started I used a power drill! I used a zip tie to hold down the power button 🤣 I use some socket attachments for the drill and then some tape until I got the ring on there nice and straight.

Hi Angelin! Not to hijack your conversation, but I've been using a Dremel on a little dremel stand for ages. I've only recently bought a lathe....the Dremel setup worked great- just a little louder than my (new) lathe! Cheers, S.

I think I can finish one of these in an hour or so.
Even with accerlater I still get a lot of air bubbles on mine
This way you may get some air bubbles, but you should be able to clean them out and add the clear coat on top.
How do I clean them out
Where did you get the UV light?
I got one from AliExpress! make sure it is the correct wavelength when you purchase.

What kind of tool do you use for cutting down the stones on lathe first?
After I sand it a little smoother, I use a carbide tip very slowly to cut away the excess.

Have you found that the UV resin yellows over time or no?
I have not had this issue. Recently have been using solarez.

Since this video, do you still exclusively use uv resin? vs CA finish?
I don't use UV resin anymore. I just ran into too many problems with it peeling or air bubbles and other things. I use a Flex CA now. Which we also sell on our site.
@@DreamwoodRings you ever have cracks in a finished ring from regular CA. Maybe a better question would be what led you to flex?

I think you are looking for what is called a Ring Mandrel

im trying to make willow leaf shaped earrings from spalted texas pecan wood, I then will try to inlay opal strip.. I found a whole tree
not sure what to use to it inlay he opals.. I was just going to use wax on the wood, but inlaying changes everything

This is INSANELY impressive…. But why do wedding bands cost so much? This looks like a maximum of 2-3 hours of work. And gemstone dust is relatively cheap. I’m genuinely curious (and mainly upset that it seems like every company is only charging a lot simply bc it’s a “wedding” band)
Thank you! I think for one it definitely depends where you go. I feel our site is on the cheaper end and also affordable. And I also will say we can make rings pretty quickly, but have spent many years doing so and also buying thousands of dollars worth of equipment to make it easier and faster. I think you could definitely buy the ring and opals and put it together on your own easily. So I think there is a lot consider when looking at the retail prices. I hope that helps a little? I make wooden wands and staffs and am inlaying cut gemstones (some I purchase, others a friend who is learning to facet stones does for me)...which of the glues would you recommend as the most useful for this purpose?
