- I built a homemade stone crusher for crushing stones for inlays. It is very simple and inexpensive and allows you to crush stones like jade, turquoise, amethyst and any other stones you may want to do inlay work with.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I made this stone crusher and crunched up a bunch of raw garnets. It worked perfectly. My initial plan was to crush them with a hammer in a box to keep the fragments from flying. This is idea is sooooo much better. Thanks again.
I'm guessing you could fill that smaller pipe with sand to help give it some more weight also. I'm definitely building this, thanks for the info!

For your strainer procedure you might want to look at classifiers that gold planners use. They have different size screens and you can stack them

Great tips! I am going to try doing this as I have been crushing with a hammer and putting the stones in plastic bags. Makes quite a mess that way. :-) But it will be a while before I can try it as I have to find the 2" cap. On your Amazon link you can't purchase a single 2" cap and the cost of 10 of them as listed is 109.99!
Obviously a bit late 🤪 but I made my own size sorters with 4 plastic cups that when stacked inside eachother have a 20mm gap between the bottoms of the cups and all I did was drill 3mm holes in the first then 2mm holes in the second and 1mm holes in the third which sorts it all out into 3-2mm, 2-1mm and 1-0.5mm

Better put some masking tape around the end grooves of those pipes. I cut my finger wide open and had to get 5 stitches. Those grooves are razor sharp.

This tool is called a mortar and pestle. You can get a good quality steel one for less than $20. It seems to me that being able to see your target, and control the direction of your hammer, would afford you much more control, and help you to avoid generating more dust than you need.

Don't waste your money trying this. I just ordered one and tried to use it to crush stones. For one thing, the pedestal is not long enough to allow you to create any real downward power and therefore will not crush the stones...not even small bead chips for stringing. Also, the metal in the pedestal is not solid so as it hits the stones it begins making indentations and I can already see that it is going to just create holes which will render the pedestal totally useless. I actually purchased one of the more expensive ones in hopes that it would be the best quality. I can't fault the product though because it was not developed for crushing stones. :-) Just stick to the handmade version in this video. Although I haven't tried it, I feel confident it has to be better than the mortal and pedestal crusher. That will be my next test.

I use something similar. I got my small metal sifter at the grocery store. I’m working on a project now and started with the amethyst but didn’t get that nice purple color I wanted so I switched to malachite which turned out great 👍🇺🇸

Just order yourself a couple CLASSIFIERS from any rock shop, or Amazon. I have 3 different size classifiers for sorting the stones I crush. That is what they are made for after all.
Freakin genius right here. I thought about using a blender, but don't wanna waste money like that. But a mortar and pestal on steroids is great.

Your video is very informative. Thank you for sharing. I have actual crystal prisms, your creation won’t work for them. Do you have suggestions how I could crush them. I’d like them the size of your amethyst before u crushed them. Any suggestions would be most helpful. Thank you.
Hi Rosa, I am not familiar with crystal prisms but you could use this device on any size stone, just have to keep checking it to get to the size you need. I looked you up,,,you are kinda famous😍 thanks for watching

Although I am going to make it for other things, I have thousands of dollars worth of antique, crystal prisms, so I will use Hole for my artwork, others, I want crushed. I can’t seem to find a way to do so. I know no matter what I come up with, it’s going to be a job and a half, I’m OK with that, I’m not OK with constantly being a hamster in a wheel. 😩😅😎
@@RosaKrystleRose I looked them up and I assume they are cut as a precious stone would be, if you are wanting them crushed, you could build the device I did with larger diameter pipe and it might work. I was being modest with the kinda comment, you are a beautiful woman!

thanks for the ideas! headed to the store for some nipples. i am thinking to turn the caps on the lathe to make the crushing area flat. also i will probably adjust the threads to where i can use them as a depth stop hopefully improving efficiency
Steve, that is exactly the way we do it in the lapidary community. Another source for stone, is your local lapidary/geological club. We often have leftover stone from projects we have completed. Some folks will sell to you cheaper than you can find online, and some will give excess stone away for free.

That's neat. Could be used to crush glass too. :D Why not make your own strainers with different hole sizes? Make a box shape strainer and it should work just fine. :D - Heidi

@@doublereno Or you could just make your own with different hole sizes. Might save time to just make one big box like they use for panning for gold but put a board in the bottom that has all different size holes. That might be more time consuming to divide them though but perhaps more efficient materials wise.

what I do when making inlay rings, is I set my stones on a plank of wood ( regardless of the stone ) and i put about 8 layers of wet paper towel over it, and just hit it lightly with a hammer. It makes the perfect size stones for inlays :)

Bought the nipples and caps, but couldn"t get a fine powder. Bought some at Michael's. Will try flattening the cap more next time on the belt sander with 80 grit.
I have this set up and I use a 2 lb. hammer and it speeds up the process a little
would this work on gemstones that are harder than amethyst? i know amethyst is harder than steel but not by much, will it work on say sapphires and garnets?
Not sure if you figured this out yet, but I imagine this would work for many different stones/gems. Hardness dictates how difficult it is to scratch something but I think it's cleavage that is how difficult it is to split it.
So this would very likely work for something like diamond, even though it is one of the hardest things out there because diamonds have perfect cleavage. I'm not as sure about sapphires cause if I'm remembering correctly them and rubies had no cleavage and so were actually tougher than diamond? Could be misremembering that, been a long time since school
Where do you get your stone for your inlays that you crush? I watched your videos and really enjoyed them and would like to try this for my daughter
You might have difficulty getting her in a tube that small, best get a bigger one
