I've made a ring with just crushed/pulverized lapis lazuli before as well. But what I did with mine was I added a small amount of pulverized pyrite (fools gold) to the lapis powder. This is because the gold specks that you sometimes see in lapis is actually pyrite, and I wanted to show a little more pyrite.
I found your video while searching for info on inlaying gemstones into poured silver. I just ordered some stuff from your website and will be giving it a shot soon! Im stoked to try it out.
Do you have a video showing how you set up the ring with the lathe before removing excess stone? I Checked your links but idk what's holding the two sides or how you connect the step mandrel to the lathe
love the video and your ongoing commentary. did you remove the black finish? it looked like that when you finished polishing! i thought that was a no no. i have not been able to do a plated ring without taking off the polish. maybe i am seeing this wrong. help me out please. nice looking ring no matter. if the black plating has been removed is that a bother to the customer? do they notice? thanks in advance for your answer.
This is actually a black ceramic ring. It is not plated so the black could never be rubbed off. If you were to use a black plated ring then yes sanding or polishing could remove the black plating.
Ceramic is as hard as tungsten! It also is not plated so the entire ring is black. Give them a try if you haven't yet! shopdreamwood.com/collections/ceramic-ring-blanks
This is great information-thank you so much! I bought all the things but can’t get the darn spindle off my lathe/polisher! Any suggestions? And thanks so much again-you make it look so easy😊
@@DreamwoodRings Hi! I don’t think so, it’s a mini polisher with a couple of different tools you can change out with the spindle-one is a ring mandrel-it doesn’t slide back and forth like a lathe but everything else is the same. It’s a really cool little piece, but I just can pull the spindle of to put the ring mandrel off! Gah, it’s frustrating! Lol
@@larrylloyd4163 I just looked and did not find it anywhere. It looks sort of like this one though amzn.to/3B0Vlpu And it is a jet lathe, could be this head. jettools.com/jml-52
Yes you can! Check out our whole stone inlay video. Just be careful when you get close to the ceramic or tungsten or you will have to spend time repolishing it.
Hey, that really depends on the channel size. I think with this 8mm ring, 5mm channel I would feel safe around 2-3 grams. That should also give you a bit extra if needed. Here is our Lapis shopdreamwood.com/products/afghan-lapis-aaa?variant=32316242624567
I noticed a hammered ring on the website. When you make the ring in the same fashion as your video, can the turning tool and sandpaper essentially remove the hammered look?

Yes, that's a great idea! The gold specs always look so good with the lapis and having more I can imagine look amazing.
Thanks so much for the help 🤠
Great learning for me- I use semiprecious stones in artwork. Thank you for sharing. Will often come back to your website to learn more.

Totally going to try this... the ring turned out gorgeous
Thank you! Lapis is one of my favorites
DreamWood Rings has THE BEST Lapis you can find. Hands down. Take it to the bank!
Thanks Ian!

What is the best brand or type of skew chisel for trimming inlay?
We really are not using anything super fancy. Here is a link to what we use. amzn.to/3J9yREj
What glue did you use?
Hello,
What kind of glue are you using?
Thank you
We use this glue for the inlay. shopdreamwood.com/products/thin-ca-glue-bsi-adhesives

can the carbide tool scrape off the ring finish
Ceramic is not plated, so a carbide tool will not scratch or discolor it.
Is there a solution if you do end up with air bubbles?
Beautiful ring! I loved your video
Thank you!
Cool. Could you do one with black obsedian stones?
With obsidian only definitely! Here is one we did with obsidian and wood though! ruclips.net/video/648roxIuJFI/видео.html

I would really love to make men rings can you tell me everything vi need to get started as a beginner please thanks
I will have to go through a video as it's a long list! For sanding I usually use the purple 3m sheets.
I don't have a lathe - but I want to make one of these, is that doable with files/sandpaper? What would you recommend?
I haven't used these exact materials but I've been able to make several wood rings basically using a drill as a lathe.
Yeah definitely. The sanding by hand might take awhile but I think you can make it looks quite nice by hand!
What type of glue are you using??
We use BSI thin CA for the inlay, and then BSI thin flex for the finish.

Yes it can be. This ring has a 5mm wide channel so it may get close but yes you can!

Ever made any of these rings without a lathe and carbide?
Definitely. We made rings on just a drill for a long time. Check out our bentwood ring series I believe it shows how we make one with a drill.
Can I use a cabbing machine instead of a lathe to grind/polish?
Yes you can! Check out our whole stone inlay video. Just be careful when you get close to the ceramic or tungsten or you will have to spend time repolishing it.

I noticed a hammered ring on the website. When you make the ring in the same fashion as your video, can the turning tool and sandpaper essentially remove the hammered look?
If you use the wrong sand paper it can! But you want to use a soft wood sand paper and it won't affect the hammered look at all.
