This song was on the radio all the time when I was a baby and apparently ( according to my parents ) was the reason for my first word being Toast. Years later I had guitar lessons and it turned out my guitar teacher was Streetbands lead guitarist, Roger Kelly. Genius guitar player , not that you'd realise if you'd only heard this song
There were pop groups called Bread, (The) Jam, (The) Marmalade and Hot Butter (Popcorn) - if that’s not a good breakfast mix, along with this track, tell me what is?
I just heard this on my local Radio station on the drive home from work and had a massive grin on my face all the way back lol! Just had to come straight in and search for it. Never heard it before but it's just awesome! "...A little piece of toast!"...
What a coincidence - I just wrote that when I shared it on my Facebook. CFNY had such a weak signal back then, because the station was in Brampton, and I lived in Scarborough. I only got decentvreception late at night. For those who don't know, we're talking about Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
I’d never heard this song before until last night when I put the episode of top of the pops on that was on bbc4. I once came out with ‘I like toast!’ Years ago randomly and find this song absolutely brilliant! I was born 9 years after it was released but love60s, 70s and 80s music
Saw them at university when this was in the charts and they threw hundreds of slices of toast into the audience. Being poor, starving students we ate them 😁
The Guy playing the brown gibson SG was my guitar teacher in the late 80s,his name is Roger Kelly and is an unbelivable player, roger was a ground breaking guitarist at the time and was very well respected on the music circuit. He still teachers guitar and lives in Worthing, west sussex, england
11 year old comment!! My daughter and grandson are here and we made him some toast. I said have you heard this song about toast? Then I seen your comment! 👍👌
But the thing that always sticks in my mind about this song is them performing live on TOTP when the bread strike was on and they changed the lyrics to mention it
Ah ha ha ~~ I used to hear this catchy little jig on radio often, when I was in the military stationed 2 years in the UK, while lived a year in the town of Ipswich, Suffolk County. I always remembered it. : ))
Thank you for your service, but you must have stayed on base a lot. Nobody but an American has ever said Suffolk County, or Devon County, or Hampshire County; it's just Suffolk, Devon and Hampshire; same for all the others. Were you Navy or USAF?
I quite liked this song back in my teenage days when I loved everything from Punk thru Glam rock to Ska, Reggae, Country, Rock and roll,Heavy Metal, Prog Rock to Classics and Opera. So how the F**K did I not know this was Paul Young on vocals one of the best voices I have ever heard second only to Freddie Mercury.
Yes...Pete & Geets show...I was attending U of T Scarborough campus. I so remember this tune and you could always find me in the kitchen at parties while awaiting for my boomerang to come back
Ha ha ha ha ha ;D))) I absalutly LOOOVE this song and often sing it , haven't heard it for years . Thank yooooO for puting it up . Lol I had like many other girlies the maddest crush on Mr Young ha ha ; ) x
Great intro -Evening all... Nice little jazz rhythm keeping the vibe going by the drummer - disco chords on the strat well balanced - bass fades in pulling them all together - harmonies very 60's musical - some scat singing thrown in - whole thing has a surreal sketch going on with jazz piano in the back - jokes at the end!! Lyrics so original ,tells a story and who else could make a song about "toast" - GENIUS
That`s Paul Young - the most mysterious voice I have heard since 1993 :] I say that every time and I won`t stop because I`m proud to be his sort-of-fan for about 15 years now 8) Unfortunately, Paul has been having problems with his voice lately :( I suggest checking out other his videos avaiable on youtube :] A really nice piece of fantastic music :] Best.
I worked for John Gifford for a time. He was the Program Director and Engineer for a family of radio stations here for a long while. A co-worker and I caught wind that he had been in a band, and we needled him relentlessly until he broke down and showed us this video. He lamented the fact that this song ever got radio play, as it was intended as a B-Side. The success of the song painted them as a novelty band, and thus were never taken seriously.
I came here from a Reddit discussion about how much The Beatles liked toast in the Get Back documentary. Clicked the link and here I am. That was funny! And I'm delighted to discover a hidden gem (to me) featuring Paul Young whose songs I loved in the 1980s! 🙂
This band was originally a below average punkband that was struggling to make it. They were playing a show and ran out of songs to play in their set. So on the spot they started doing this song about...toast lol. At the time basically every service you could think of was on strike, from garbage men to nurses and yes the BAKERS! so when this came out people could really relate to it. Right time and right place. Learnt that from the ongoing history of new music on FM 96 :D
Loved this and anyone who remembers it when I sing it to them. Walkout at a breakfast bar singing toast and a 65yrold lady jumped right in, we laughed our heads off. Seen Paul 3X's never played Toast...😉
Holy crap, I heard this song once before, when I was in highschool back in the 90s, and I went around singing the one word chorus at people for weeks after and it drove everyone nuts (I was doing a lot of LSD.) So glad I found this song again!
nope!..sorry didnt get that!.."just a little bit aaa toast!!"...I grew up on that, and it never did me any harm!. Drippin in the fridge, appreciated what I got..gave thanks for life!..what more is there to ask for??...(just a little bit of toast!)..
Remember watching this on TOTP, I'd have been 10, and the next morning my 3 brothers and me were all scraping dry toast in tune to this. No PlayStation in those days.
they should do an 'unplugged version called bread.
And really go back to basics with 'Dough'.
It took this comment 7 years to get 100 likes? People suck. (Mine was upvote #100)
PMSL!
Greatest group on earth BREAD!
That's gold!
I heard this only once about 40 years ago, and it has remained with me for all of that time. Finally looked for it today and here it is!! ❤❤❤
My friend said she wanted this song's chorus played as her body is being cremated 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think she's a genius 😁😁😁😁
I want Through the Fire and Flames.
Utterly brilliant......Proper LOL moment...
I love this idea!
When she's '' Brown Bread ''.??
I just found a royalty cheque for this song in my loft! One of this band lived in my house!! This is now my claim to fame...
Cool! How much was it for?
A sonblest cheque!❤
Obviously not much
Honey on toast?
I've read that the song was finally credited to the band manager and Streetband "never saw a penny" so that makes you think
Toast was originally a B side number but after the late Kenny Everett heard it and mass played it, it soon became an A side hit for Paul & Streetband.
Good old Kenny
My mum and me are always singing this song. "A little bit of toast" in the kitchen, and we always smile. Love it!
poppy bright lol
That's so sweet, poppy bright.
My dad introduced me to this song and we always sing it, it's great. Never fails to bring a smile
Same!!
I love the way Paul says "or chocolate if you're strange". The inventor of Nutella must have been listening to this record.
+Throatwobbler Mangrove Nice thumbnail :) GILF!!!!
Ena sharples..... sex symbol. Corrrr 😂
Nutella was launched 15 years prior to this song's release.
Looks like sh*t scraped on toast
@@nkt1 based
The only song in the history of popular music to feature a toast-scraping solo.
Haha, now there's a quote.
I’m surprised no one has come up with another one?! 😂
My fav comment😂
There were pop groups called Bread, (The) Jam, (The) Marmalade and Hot Butter (Popcorn) - if that’s not a good breakfast mix, along with this track, tell me what is?
Underrated comment!! 😂

Did you have some toast when you got home ?
So glad my mother introduced me to this song as a kid. Going to send this to my American boyfriend he'll love it.
love love love this
great memories of CFNY playing this in the morning in the late 1970's
What a coincidence - I just wrote that when I shared it on my Facebook. CFNY had such a weak signal back then, because the station was in Brampton, and I lived in Scarborough. I only got decentvreception late at night.
For those who don't know, we're talking about Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
They were still playing it when I started listening in the early nineties
CFNY "The Spirit of Radio" indeed at that time. With gems like "Toast"
Cool to hear that this got Canadian airplay.
Ahhh good ole CFNY. Radio station of my youth in the 80's and 90's. I also remember them playing this. Stuck in my head ever since.
Still sticks in the mind 40+ years later

This is the best song I have ever heard in my entire life
Simple classic, I’ll never forget to this day! 🎶🎸😃
this is amazing. simple, understated, subtle complexity. lovely.
But the thing that always sticks in my mind about this song is them performing live on TOTP when the bread strike was on and they changed the lyrics to mention it
One of my first and favourite singles as a kid!
Mine too, we had the single. My parents thought this was the most hilarious song.
Good lord I haven't heard this in decades - always LOVED this song!
So much love for this song. Just munched my way through 4 pieces of toast

What are you talking about - this IS a love song!
Pure genius who knew what Mr Young would go on to achieve love it
I don't know about genius 🤔
And a side note, I love seeing his hair like this. It's so different from his spike 'do. And he's basically almost rapping. Love it!
Just had a cup of tea, toast and marmite.....LOVE IT!!!!
Love the London accent coming thru & the ‘way ahead of time mini rap & that scratching’ of the TOAST
Never knew Paul Young sang this, his early days, love it ..!!
Kudos to the bassist and drummer. Everything about this track is just gold!
Haven't heard this in ages, thanks so much for sharing! And thanks to Tracy for telling me about it!!! :D You rock girl.

+rodsreel It's a lovely little ditty that we all sang along to. Good times.
It's not a strat, it's a tele.

Glad I found this one, heard it years ago just after starting at boarding school.
This just Slays me.. I do not know why? I had to save it to my favorites and watch it everytime I need a pick me up!!!
If you aren't playing this song while gleefully eating your toast at the dining table, wearing a napkin, you're not doing it right.
Ah! Remembering this song from the late 70s and early 80s when it was played on Toronto's CFNY 102.1 "The Spirit of Radio!"
I've just had some toast, as it happens.

awesome tune, loved watching it on top of the pops as a wee lad. sandwiched in between sham69 and david bowie and bee gees vidz. 70s rocked.
Best thing Paul Young ever did, not saying the rest of his stuff was brown bread.
Everything Must Change is bloody good.
abc ezas123 Not true! He’s done a lot of great stuff.
"Brown bread" is cockney for "dead".

Whenever me & my gorgeous partner make toast we have to sing it its one crazy song😍
I remember this very much 😂. Was at college at the time when this was released. Have toast each morning now.
I was in the UK when this first hit the airwaves. And just like then - I am insane now.
