  • A little rushed on this one but I have been keeping Ronny Pitman waiting too long. Here is a user report, with images, to display the results from this "blast from the past!".
    Enjoy.

I had two of those. For the first 360 photos those days, with the fish eye and ipix software. Great little camera.

I remember that I paid 725,-€ back in 2001 for the Nikon Coolpix 950. This is an advanced camera. You can even use Nikons flash system with it. There was a TTL adapter cable available from Nikon and also a rather interesting and superexpensive fisheye lens. It is somehow funny to see that I paid less for my used Nikon D3 two years ago.

This was a great time for digital cameras. Everything was so innovative because digital cameras were so new. Remember the Ricoh GXR? Instead of just changing the lens, you changed the sensor + lens! Heck they still made them up until 2013 I believe.

I would have to agree with pretty much everything you said, pro and con. I mostly used the camera for genealogy work-photographing court house records, gravestones, etc, so the swivel body was exactly what I needed. Burning through rolls of film would not have made sense for genealogy work, including lots of digital images uploaded to family history forums. The camera got heavy use for several years so I certainly got my money's worth from it. May it now serve you well, even if only as a curiosity.

I have very much appreciated the gift. I still occasionally take it out and play with it, it certainly slows you down. It has been fun. What cameras do you use now?

I may reply outside of the original subject, but I have recently decided to not take my FF gear on trips, but only my "smart" phone and its excellent camera. Guess what? Except for dark scenes, it produces very decent pictures... World of photography is changing fast, I guess the market for cheap camera is dead for good. I need to say that I missed the EVF of my FF body though. Shooting outdoors without having any idea of the composition is annoying, but results are pretty good.

      J. Badinter I totally agree on all counts. The EVF is the biggest draw to my “real” camera now. Phones have truly killed the low range of the camera market.

I had someone ask me to recommend a cheap $250 digital camera and it was VERY hard to find something that was better than your phone. You're right, the low end camera market is pretty much toast. Most dedicated cameras on the market eventually will be for just us photographers or ones who want something better than their phone or want telephoto zoom for their kids. What's even stranger is I know a lot of photographers are buying older used digital cameras. I think we all liked the limitations and the quirkiness of early gen digital cameras. They made you work for the photo you wanted which in return made you a better photographer.
