- 2015 was a transformational year in the theme park industry, as parks had to make major decisions about the types of rides they were going to add in the future, some coasters were at a crossroads and were altered or renovated, and one chain was staring down their own demise and had to take drastic measures to pull themselves out of their tailspin. These are the top 10 events that changed the theme park industry from 2015.

I can't overstate the impact that The Smiler accident had on my home park, all the shows were stopped, around half the food places were shuttered and it spelled the end for so many of the park's older rides like Ripsaw, The Flume and Nemesis Sub-Terra that was only in it's 4th season. It's been a very long road to recovery for Alton Towers but it's finally getting there with Nemesis Sub-Terra actually reopening next weekend for the first time since 2015.
Overstate. You mean a machine that goes 60 mph with a seat belt killed people. Lmfao...get over it. Go ride the merry go round you pussy
There’s are rumours and people ACTUALLY overhearing staff that Ripsaw might be returning after Nemesis reopens
@@Th3Sm1ler So I’ve heard and I’m beyond excited but I’ll also believe it when it see it given how Towees has been this season
wow did not believe 2015 is the turning point for theme parks and coasters
Twisted Colossus and Fury were some of my favorite moments from 2015. My favorite RMC opened this year!
Great list! I knew Fury would be among the top stories and it may end up being #2 in the long run behind Sea World. Thought you may comment on the RMC additions that year. A lot of big decisions came down in 2015.
There were some bigtime RMCs coming down on the coasts, but not sure how impactful they were in general. 2015 wasnt particularly a unique year for RMC additions
2015 was a HUGE year for me. It was the year of my first multi-park road trip outside of my home state of Florida! Went to Carowinds, Dollywood and Kings Island. Rode Fury and Banshee that year. Also rode Thunderroad before it got demolished. That trip alone greatly boosted my coaster credit count!
I was not an enthusiast in 2015, and knew very little about anything going on in the industry. With a week-long trip to Florida planned, I had a few days open, so I bought a season pass to SeaWorld Orlando. I only rode Manta once on my 2011 visit, so I was very anxious to get more rides on it, having been fascinated at the concept of the ride, plus I love the animals & all the rescue work that SeaWorld does. 2015 was a rough year for me personally, but that Florida trip & the visits to SeaWorld Orlando meant so much to me.
I was on The Smiler a few days before the incident, I was shocked when I heard.
And so happy The Hulk was saved, shall be back on it in a few months.
I was on the Smiler only 2 months before, that accident upset me so much. I mean, I was in a pretty bad place mentally at that time and started to drift away from being a roller coaster enthusiast in the months afterwards. Luckily, my love for roller coasters returned with a vengeance the next year on and I'm arguably a bigger enthusiast now than I've ever been.
I was at one of the rest stops in CT the day Lightning Rod was announced-and got on it a year and a day later-which might be the tightest turn around for a BRAND new ride that I know of (Jolly Rancher Remix was about 9 months from 2/24/2022-11/19/2022; I was studying abroad in Spain at the time of that announcement so I either saw it that night or first thing the next day before going Escorial with my contingent). Might see about going out to Hersheypark on June 3rd to get my first ride on Skyrush since 2015-oh and the new Cat
FURY 325!
Did u have to mention that derailment😭
Plus 2015 began my traveling to theme parks. Thanks again to fury.
We were lucky to ride old Hulk in 2015 and then the re-tracked new version in 2017. Still love that ride today. So pleased Universal kept it.
2015 for me in a nutshell: Magic Mountain got an incredible coaster, and Carowinds took out Thunder Road and made Intimidator irrelevant
2015 was a strong year. My number 1 in Fury 325 debuted, Lagoon got Cannibal, and this was the year my Jeep was considered new.
One of my favorite coaster years. Fury 325, Twisted Colossus, Wicked Cyclone, and Switchback open. And, the first Coaster Studios coaster parodies.
Lame 325. Give me magic mountain batman a trillion times more than lame325. Boring boring boring. Horrible coaster that and el sucko
Nice list. I am only missing the opening of der schwur des karnen in Hansa Park. It's such an unique ride and still the best Gerstlauer coaster till date.
Great to see the all the best of 2015, keep the series up!
I remember this year was when I discovered coasters, and from the get go I was hooked, to bad when I first went to amusement parks I chicken out on most coasters.
Also OOF that blackhawks Stanley cup win is what made us bolts fans hate Chicago (though I don’t hate them as much as a certain team in Columbus and Toronto)
The Seahawks forgot they had beast mode in the back field got me dying 😂
I’ll be on the 6th and final US Justice League this summer with the one at Six Flags Great Adventure, and seeing it make the top 10 on this video makes me even more excited to get US Justice League completion.
Glad 2015 got you back into coasters, love your videos!
I had wanted a flying car a la Back to the Future Part II in 2015, but I guess I’ll take Wicked Cyclone as a close second. 😊
Just went to Carowinds for the first time ever and got to ride Fury 325 for the first time! That was insane ! Cannot wait to go back!
I live in OKC like you. Do you have any idea when Frontier City is going to FINALLY add another coaster?? Love your channel!
Yoo 2015 insane year
Great list and I am glad that Justice League: Battle For Metropolis made the list.
2015 was the year that my family took our first (and right now only) trip to Universal Studios Florida and I am happy that we went when we did. Two of the attractions we hit up were Twister...Ride it Out and Disaster!: A Major Picture Ride...Starring You! and both of them closed just a few months after our trip. I would also get to see Terminator 2 3D: Battle Across Time for the final time during that trip (saw it many times at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2004 (birthday trip), 2011 (activation of my 2012 annual pass), and 2012 (my annual pass and I managed to twist my sister's arm to take my sister to go with me to see it on December 16, 2012- 15 days prior to it closing); and I never made it to Universal Studios Japan).
2015 was the year Jeff Gordon made his final full time season driving his iconic #24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in the NASCAR Cup Series
And it was also the year Kyle Busch pulled off the Comeback of the Century by winning the Cup Series Championship after missing 1/3 of the season due to injuries sustained after a scary crash in the Xfinity Series race at Daytona
I went to the theater to watch BTTF 1 and 2 on the excact day!!!
This was one of years that my friends and I traveled a lot to tons of parks. I miss being able to do this but life has made this harder to do as the years go by sadly.
2015 was the year before I got into coasters. I went to Busch Gardens Williamsburg the year before and Six Flags America the year after, but none in 2015.
Cedar Fair closed Skyrider in 2014, a Togo stand up. Park sold it to a park in Italy. Interesting events. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I wasn't an enthusiast nor was I riding coasters back in 2015 but I remember the media coverage on the smiler when the accident happened. Honestly because of it I find it a difficult one to queue for, not because I think it'll happen again (if I did I wouldn't queue at all) but just because the area around the ride has this air of "accident scene" to it. It all feels a bit.. off, around there. Like imagine, everyone's smiling and laughing trying to pretend that nothing ever happened. It feels like that there. Oblivion next to it feels fine. It's just around that particular ride.
I'm still on the fence about the new stand up coaster, Surf Coaster. Some reviews so far said it was pretty fun. I'm not a fan of stand ups. To me it was a gimmick to try, and it didn't add any excitement after a few rides.
Let's not forget 2015 was also the last year Italy received a new big coaster as of now (the last one being Oblivion The Black Hole at Gardaland)😢
This is a niche story but I went to my first haunt, Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando for the first time. This would spark a love for haunts that is just as strong as roller coasters.
5:44 holiday world did announce their next roller coaster
Rougarou was my first looper that year...I have a very soft spot for it
The smiler incident is way over blown
Try telling that to the people who had limbs amputated and those still living with PTSD following the incident. Your comment is insensitive and offensive!
As a former ride op. Two things that hit home to me. Smiler & Sea World. Pride in safely entertaining guests. I used to "babysit" dolphins during the nearby concert. Guests would walk past the show to/from the concert site. I was to make sure they didn't short cut through there and play with the dolphins. They BITE. I did throw a soccer ball to them. They loved it. All parks would eventually remove dolphin shows. Both Florida/Cali have parks that heavily use their coasters since they are year round attractions with high attendance #s. Disneyland has to replace BTM & SP. I have "plan" for Matterhorn to keep it going.
This was the year that made Utah revenant
2015 was the year I went to upper clements park for the last time before it closed 4 years later
2015… my first year working at a theme park 2017 I moved from merch to ride operator. 2018 I moved into leadership. 2020 I left the theme park world. (It was the 1800s themed theme park)
Kentucky kingdom opens for the first full season and added or reopened 5 rides.
Mans casually forgetting about Dragon Slayer and Tumbili when out here saying no new free spins have been added in the past 4 years. The DISRESPECT.
I just meant for the Six Flags chain
You forgot the most important story: it was the year I became an enthusiast!
Great list. Personally I would have put The Smiler’s accident at #1 because of how badly it injured the riders. Life altering injuries like amputation is about as bad as it gets as far as a non fatal injury goes
you are my biggest inspiration
Heavens to Betsy Chris, “Eel-Lees-Burg” is the town Knoebels is in 😂
I thought I had it right this time...I've been calling it Ellie's-Burg, but I was told it was E-Lies-Burg...now you're telling me it's EEL LEES Burg..I give up
@@AirtimeThrills to be fair, though I’m from Pennsylvania, I’m not from that area particularly so it’s entirely possible I was told incorrect info HAHA
Chris, when is my video idea "70s and 80s coasters and favorite YES songs" getting released?
@@MeatTwizzler ok thx
2015 and now Ireland is back in airtime thrills videos after 3 weeks I guess me talking all about it worked😂😂
1:42
Hmm... If you were doing an international historical videos subject, I would think Ireland's first major coaster would actually garner some interest (but since you're just focusing on just within the US, that's alright.)
Im not just looking at US hence the Smiler accident, just didnt think Cu Chulainn was top 10 worthy
I think I might be becoming an enthusiast, how do i start blogging?
your so awesome bro
This is a great series you run. Few thoughts. (Btw keep these going)
- seaworld path starting here is working I love all the sea world parks (Busch gardens too). Blackfish was a dark moment in their history. Seaworld may be the best regional chain
-six flags free spins- I got mixed feelings. Cheap, small footprint; the ride isn’t for me.
- they actually should add one to great escape and Georgia.
- sally rides are very fun, I wish sfne would have gotten one.
- holiday world and Knobels both need new coasters.
-2015 #buyorsell the next launched b&m launched wing goes to six flags great adventure,
- lagoon is a park that I would really like to visit; hard to get to Utah for me thought from New Hampshire
- islands of adventure might regret not taking out the hulk but good for them for preserving it.
-cedar point should have removed mantas and sent to Michigan adventure with the new floor less trains.
- ghost rider looks amazing but I do wonder if titan track is in their future
- 2015 cemented kings dominion become a second tier cedar fair park
-2015 was the last year sfne got a good addition.
I actually miss Mantis. Changing the cars to floorless ones made the layout dull and boring. It rarely ever has a line as Rougarou, I wish they would just tear it down and build something better.
Still to this day the original smiler marketing was brilliant
Good video
That was a rough year sports wise being a Seattle Seahawks (RUN THE BALL!), NY Mets (Don’t take Harvey out!) and UNC Tarheel fan (Duke sucks). SixFlags getting in the carnival business with the 4D free spin👎👎👎
I love SeaWorld, I do miss what the animal shows once were. But I love their investments in coasters like Texas Stingray, Manta, and Mako. I hope they continue with this trend of adding coasters, but also keeping up with their animal shows. Without those it just wouldn’t be the same
Knotts opened in 1920 actually
*it wad alot faster than just 20mph*
*more like 50mph*
I did not attend an amusement park from 2005 To 2017. Boycotted Six Flags for the entire time when they shut down AstroWorld for no reason in Houston Texas because kirian Burke was a dumbass they could have made arrangements for parking for the theme park that was my home part and from that point until 2017 I never bisit another thing part I boycotted
Six Flags was overbloated in 2005, and losing New Orlenas to Katrina didn't help. AstroWorld had fallen into disrepair, and the arrival of the Houston Texans and the closure of the Astrodome were all adding up. Doesn't mean they made the right call, because they overestimated the value of the land and left a legacy to rot.
You forgot that time Black Ops 3 launched a new era of good, fun Zombies, lasting from 2015 to 2018. BO3, Infinite Warfare, WWII and Black Ops 4. Of course, Need For Speed 2015 came out at this time, Lewis Hamilton just won his second F1 championship for Mercedes, and Just Cause 3 is peak Just Cause. In the field of anime, Love Live. Need I say more?
F1!!! Oh hi
@@annmariebellew7402 Oh yeah, I remember you. Aren't you the one who pins all of my messages on your videos?

Howd you forget the groundbreaking scotus decision that legalized same sex marriage like fr 😭
