This series may not be your most popular, but I think it’s really interesting to look into the past and see how things came to be today in the theme park world.
And makes you feel old that this all happened 15 years ago
@@AirtimeThrills15yrs ago I was 20. Damn….

Ah yes, 2008. The year I was born. Then 15 years later I am now a stupendously big rollercoaster enthusiast.
2008 was a bittersweet year...I had a 6 month battle with leukemia and I beat that battle..and after I won..the make-a-wish foundation granted my wish to visit six flags magic mountain and universal studios Hollywood 1 year later
Nice :)
Congratulations! It must have been tough but you beat cancer.
Congrats on your victory, I'm sure it wasn't easy
WOAH
Canadas wonderland thoosies are waiting
I can't believe 2008 is 15 years ago.
It’s really amazing how much Canada’s Wonderland has improved since Cedar Fair took ownership of the park. Sometimes I wonder what the park would be like today if someone like Six Flags, or Herschend Family Entertainment owned the park.
I think 2008 ended up being a good year for the amusement industry, long term. The parks were becoming so obsessed with producing the biggest, meanest, most intense roller coasters that they were becoming venues that appealed, almost exclusively, to enthusiasts. If you weren't a huge fan of insane positive Gs, you really weren't seeing much new being built for you. Magic Mountain, in particular, was a major offender here.
After 2008, when the chains had to dial back what they were doing for cost reasons, we started to see an uptick in new kinds of ride experiences that offered more diversity of sensations. Some positives, some negatives, some laterals. I think that was a healthy direction for the industry to go in for long-term sustainability and to attract the average GPs and families.
Biggest regret is not being an even more annoying kid begging my parents to take me to freestyle music park when we were at myrtle Beach in 09. Now I never got to experience that park
Seriously. If i was more of a coaster fanatic at the time i may have tried to go there when i went to BGW/KD that summer
I know lots of people have theories as to why the coaster wars ended, but for me I think the recession was the big blow. It was a wake up call to most chains telling them that going really crazy, while sounding good in the short term, is very expensive, and in times of economic downturn not really smart. Thats probably why most parks survived the pandemic honestly.
2008 was also the year I rode my first coaster! It was Lil’ Phantom at Kennywood, and I think my really young self enjoyed it a lot! Also I rode it the same month the crash happened huh
I Rode My First Coaster In 2018 At 13 Manta At Seaworld Orlando
Solid theory. People attribute it to Maverick but it was concurrent with the downturn
The Great Recession hit parks harder than the pandemic did since it was a multi-year slump in demand. With COVID, 2020 was a bust, 2021 was weird and disrupted, but from there on, there was a lot of pent-up demand and the main problem was finding staff.
Suprised astrolands shutdown wasn’t big enough to make the official list. Great content as usual.
Just because the park never really shut down, just changed hands
T Express was one of the more notable additions of 2008. Looks like maybe one of the best prefabs ever made
I always liked this series... I also remember being extremely excited because diamondback showed up that next year...
The recession hit hard. I remember being in sixith grade and having the annual honors student Cedar Point trip as the main motivator for doing well in school because I knew my family wouldn't be able to pay for all of us to go on too of gas lol
Still remember those Behemoth ads. The one where people are screaming and running away in terror and then 7 people run towards it.
I absolutely love this series. It is my favorite of the bunch. As a history and roller coaster nerd, please do as many as possible!
Unfortunately this series is about to come to an end...2 or 3 more episodes max
Video idea: Best rolling launches in North America
2008 was the year I made my first trip to SeaWorld San Antonio & Fiesta Texas, in addition to Schlitterbahn. That trip did get me my only ride on maybe the worst coaster I've ever ridden, Rattler. And that same structure now supports one of my favorite coasters. I was also able to see the spectacular show, Believe, at SeaWorld multiple times. It was one of the best shows at any theme park. It would soon be renovated into a different show that was nowhere near as amazing. That was my only theme park trip of the year, and my coaster count after that trip was 25.
Loved the pics of young(er) Chris enjoying the parks! I think it adds a nice personal touch to note where these events fit into your own coaster history.
Yeah 2008 was a big year for 20-yr-old me even though I wasn't really seeking out coaster credits. I'm just happy I happened to buy a camera recently and took a ton of pictures..
I know you don't like the ride (contrary to most enthusiasts), but Ravine Flyer II was transformational to Waldameer in 2008. The pace of expansion and improvements Waldameer has been seeing the past decade and a half all started with the opening of Ravine Flyer II. To this day the coaster is sought out by enthusiasts and is very popular with GP.
Behemoth! Thank god Cedar Fair added it to Canada’s Wonderland! Personally my favourite coaster at the park
2008 was the year I took my first-ever trip to my home park, Six flags Great America. I still have some memories from that day, including marathoning my first-ever roller coaster, Spacely’s Sprocket Rockets. I’ll forever be grateful for that.
Truly sad what happened to Hard Rock Park…it looked like it was a pretty solid park but it just bombed so painfully anyway…at least Six Flags New Orleans had a reason behind its shockingly short run…at least a better one than just….”bad timing “, I guess?😊
Your concept of "not being into coasters" is interesting. In 2008 I hadn't visited an amusement park in about 15 years (apart from some FECs with bumper boats and such, and the occasional state fair where I didn't go in the ride area). But I had a toddler who was growing fast and I lived about 20 minutes away from Canobie Lake Park, and those things combined would get me back into visiting parks at least occasionally a couple of years later.
I definitely wasn't an enthusiast anymore, following news and message boards and all that, but given how much I knew about those east coast parks I had to check them out when I had the chance. What DID get me back into coasters was my toddler at the time going to Magic Mountain on the weekends so I'm right there with you
I love this series! So much effort and explained so nicely.
wake up babe new Events That Changed the Theme Park Industry just dropped
Funny to think that something important happened with roller coasters happened the same year I was born 😅. I also realized that in my 15 years of life, I've rode 15 (soon to be 18) coasters... another coincidence, but a sad one.
I love your videos they are always very high quality, respectful, realistic, well-produced, and well thought out.
Thanks for the kind words, I tried to make this series extra professional
I went to Hard Rock Park. It was missing a whole lot. Shade… water rides… things to do… But Nights in White Satin is one of my favorite dark rides.
I love this series! Keep it going please! :)
It's just about to end though, i can do 2017 and 2018, MAYBE 1998 but beyond that i dont think i can
2008 was the year I went to most of California’s parks for the first time. Only major ones I didn’t do were Great America and Universal.
I remember going to Myrtle Beach in 2009 and passing by Hard Rock Park. I was absolutely floored by the B&M looper. Definitely sparked my interest in coasters even more as a 13 year old
0:25 still hurts as a Penguin fan seeing the Red Wings lift the Cup on Civic Arena ice. But we got them back in 09.
I think now would be a good time to update why you really got into rollercoasters again after watching this series.👍
I’m always glad I wasn’t sentient during the recession, but am a bit bummed I wasn’t old enough to go to parks before and after it to see the differences
Seeing six flags invest like crazy was a weird thing
Also in 2008 Ravine Flyer II opened at Waldameer, putting that park on the map!
What you said about Six Flags raising ticket prices in 2006 backfiring on them is ironic considering their recent troubles involving raised ticket prices. Selim Bassoul should have known better since they already tried raising prices in the past and it hadn't worked.
2008... The year I rode my first big coasters: Boomerang and Roar at SFDK. I was still too short to ride Medusa lol
In 08 I was still mad/crying that my beloved Geauga Lake had been murdered, and cannibalized so unceremoniously. We lost the Villian because of that.
Video idea: Ranking all of the defunct six flags parks
I miss those great concerts at Six Flags
Chris when he “wasn’t that into coasters” went to more parks than I’ve been to as a 35yo that is super into coasters lol 😂
Yay, Behemoth.its a great ride. Rumor is that Gravity Group is going to be involved in the refurbishment of Wildebeast. Exciting times. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
15:31 So that's how Airtime Thrills got it's logo.
Precisely. A 15 year old picture with an old camera. Well, it was new in 2008
Good catch! And a super neat bit of Airtime Thrills lore.
The oddest part was the themes at Six Flags Dubai. Out of all the parks they had to choose from at the time Great Escape was of the parks they went with. 😮🤷🏻♂️
2008-2009 easily some of the best years for the coaster industry considering maverick ending the coaster wars and that is huge
Ah 2008. The Great Discovery releases for Thomas fans alike… wait, this is about coasters not trains.
Uh. This is one of the last years of Son of Beast. *chuckles nervously*
That year I went to both Discovery Kingdom and Magic Mountain just for Thomas Town, since I was hugely into Thomas back then.
Hey, I remember that movie! Is that where Thomas goes over the waterfall (I have a train set based off that scene).
@@strongarm_11 Correct! I always wanted that Action Canyon set. But never got it (The Great Discovery is one of the best Thomas movies though)
@@IsleofPigsStudios agreed, I grew up with many Thomas movies as a kid but this was the best one in my opinion.
I graduated college that Spring. It was a rough time to need a job and be in debt, let me tell ya.
I know how you feel. I was in the same boat not long after. I started my senior year of college in 08
i have a good video idea: what every country needs to have an elite lineup
I know it's gonna a be great
No way! It’s the guy that bullies Super Coasters!
@@Coaster_Network yeah for being shit
Making me feel Old, I graduated in 2008 lol
Love this series. I wonder if Paramount regrets selling off
Hard to say, but there's no way they would have done what CF has done for those parks. Plus they sold off right before the crash which was prob a good thing for them
1:13 DID I SEE FOILE A DEUX??? HELLO???? SECOND BEST FOB ALBUM???
3rd Best FOP Album 😁
So hard to rank em but I would probably put Foile after Cork Tree but ahead of Infinity and their original
I'm a big fan of this series.
2008 was a memorable, but not very eventful year for me. I had just moved to Arizona the year before, which is extremely sparse for roller coasters, but at the time I was getting very into video games instead after getting a DS and a Wii.
2008, it kinda brings me back to 4 yrs before I even existed on this world...
Thats wild
I wonder what made Cedar fair take away the paramount IP's away from all the rides that had them. If they had 10 years to keep using it why give it up so soon? I would have thought keeping an IP would bring more people in. but I'm really just jealous I never got to ride backlot when it was Italian job.
Maybe just to make the parks their own, clearly they had grand plans for them, plus I believe they had to pay Paramount a fee for using the IPs but not sure if that was the only reason
Expedition Everest is 6 inches away from being a hyper coaster
Nowadays were the ones with financial issues after a six flags trip😭
Hahahah yes
The fact Six Flags DubaiLand was going to have sections of the park named after some the famous parks in the chain is so clever. You rarely get that from Six Flags.
I was surprised that apparently Great Escape was one of the choices.
@@COASTER_CHASER_1 Yeah. That one was one of the odder choices. Either the park was more popular back in the mid-2000's or Great Escape had a nice ring to it. Perhaps both
@@ToaOfFusion i wouldn't say more popular, but the park was heavily relying on the ride relocation program and growing. i think Six Flags was trying to build it into a destination park with the Hotel. but the 07 recession caused them to hit the breaks.

Never seen this series on this channel how long has this series lasted?
18 episodes. It started early in 2020 i think
Why am I always early?😂
