As someone who has suffered depression most of their adult life I found this game to be incredibly cathartic in it's combination of frank conversation cutscenes and symbolism. Could not recommend this game enough. Best $30 (Australian) I've spent.
seanjoseph91 I've been turning to this game to deal with my anxiety when it gets too bad. So many reviews seem to see this game as a difficult platformer with a throwaway story, but to me the platforming is there to enhance the feeling of the story. I wish more games took this approach to create these powerful experiences.
I've been noticing how psychologists and artists of different art mediums have slowly been recognizing the potential for different art forms to be therapeutic for people dealing with different mental illnesses--music therapy, dance therapy, writing therapy, etc. and I've actually been looking for "game therapy" and heard about this game from a friend. I hope people catch on about it and become more serious/intentional in the way they make games.
two of the biggest selling points to me was the music, and the gameplay. I hate rage games but this game technically isnt one. games like getting over it have weird, unfair controls. This game though, has very simple controls. c=jump z=climb x=dash. Thats it. The way it plays with it makes the game so interesting. Yes this game is very, VERY, hard but, it isn't unfair. Every death seemed like my fault. but seriously if you want to pick up this game prepare to rage. I even had to take breaks just to prepare for the next section of the level, but finishing a level just feels so good. completing the game 100% was such a huge fucking accomplishment to me. buy this game. I can't say it's the best game ever. But it's definitely one of the best platformers I have ever played. The dev masterfully created a difficulty curve where the game always challenges you, but when you go back to previous levels to find collectibles you're like "was this always this easy?"

Handal Piper The postcard in the game says they’re there to impress your friends, and it’s technically not wrong. That being said, if you as the player didn’t collect very many you can always re-visit the prologue after collecting more and you’ll see the better endings anyhow.

This game was good and fine during the main story's play-through. It didn't really suck me in, but I liked it enough to want to complete it... I put about nine hours into the game and saw it through to the end. Quite frankly, I think it’s overrated to hell and back. Yes, the message about depression and anxiety is great but unless you fall into that one niche of gamers who like sadomasochistic platformers...it’s not fun to play. If I want difficulty, I’d much rather play castlevania, ninja gaiden, or ghouls n ghosts. Sure, they’re also hard and you die a lot, but at least it isn’t thousands of times and you’re not seeing the same exact screen over and over. Might just be me but playing something like this or meat boy, I start to get lazy after a while because it’s just that single screen that always operates in a predetermined way upon every reset. With any of the games I mentioned earlier (or even any normal platform game for that matter), enemies or obstacles might behave a little differently and it helps keep shit interesting even after dying in the same spot a handful of times.
You tried B-side yet? If you keep dying in the same spot in the standard path that's only your fault. It's the game's way of telling you that you're doing something wrong and you should think outside the box more.
Why would you feel the need to compare them? Both are incredible games. No need to diminish one just to give credit to a completely unrelated other game.
That being said, I’m not disagreeing with you. Celeste for me is a 9.5/10 and Hollow Knight is a 10/10. There’s just so much more to do and so many more great things in Hollow Knight, but Celeste still does what it sets out to do as well any game I’ve seen.
I haven't played the game yet, and I'm totally going to do it soon, but Celeste to me isn't really or doesn't seem like the "Greatest game ever made". I've played many games, and this one looks good, i've played games like this, like Super Meat Boy, DownWell, etc. And it looks really fun, but doesn't seem like it's the one of the greatest. It's, again, really good looking and most likely plays like Super Meat Boy, but, it seems kinda generic, with the generic "Depression" theme. It mainly got popular because of it. It seems like most indie games is or has some sort of theme of depression, I don't mind it, I have a few depressed friends, but it seems generic to me. That's just my opinion though, it looks like an amazing game!
The claim is not that it's the greatest, the claim is that it's one of the greatest. And while the depression part is a major theme in the game, it's not the main gig. I came for the platforming, and stayed for it too. Most reviews also praise the game's platforming too. I've 106%ed super meat boy, so I know the game in and out, and I see the similarities, but celeste is far from meat boy. Celeste has few levels, but they're high quality. SMB has many short levels. Celeste has vastly different environments and gimmicks, while SMB's environments all seem the same, and lacks gimmicks. Celeste tells a good (even if it's generic) story. SMB is more gameplay based. Celeste's graphics and soundtracks are amazing, while meat boy's are pretty plain. And finally, while meat boy's platforming is well thought out with many great levels, it doesn't seem like someone thought about the fun-ness of the levels. I 106%ed it for bragging rights and self satisfaction, but I didn't have much fun doing it. Celeste on the other hand, has great platforming that I actually have fun doing. AND it's hard! To me, celeste is what I had hoped to see in meat boy. And I accidentially spent 30 minutes arguing that celeste is a good game, when you already agreed that it's good. *facepalm* And now my comment is a wall of text. *TLDR: I think celeste was far more well thought out than meat boy, and is generally better.*
@@godlyvex5543 ok chief yknow what i was with you on everything until you said smb soundtrack are bad, and i mean i love celeste soundtrack but smb soundtrack is just so thrilling and amazing, i mean smb sound design-wise isnt that great but the composition of the songs is just
All you do in this game is die and die and die to learn how not to die and reach the other end of the screen. Your reward? Another screen which could take another 50 deaths to master and on it goes. Just being chased by that crazy hotel manager. Dying and dying and dying. I've given this game some time because everyone goes on and on a out how this is the greatest game, a marvel an absolute bomb. While I appreciate that it might be a great game for reasons I simply can't understand, I'm completely bored with it and just pissed off really. No flow at all, nothing to enjoy there's simply nothing in this game just tedious jumping around and dying a lot, jumping back at the beggining. I can imagine this is the whole game about, but then this whole game is a just a big, very tedious chore. With the reward being more chores and grind. Maybe it just tells about my mental state, but this game just pisses me off. And the way people talk about it, pushes me to try to open my mind to it, but it just fucking pisses me off!!!
Almost every game can be categorized under "All you do is die until you learn how to not die, and then when you beat the level/area/section you get rewarded with more gameplay (where you die until you learn to not die)". Every game with a death system works like this lol.
Draelos wow what a thinker you are. Now try to think a bit harder and understand what I’m talking about. There’s other stuff to do in other games. There are rewards, side activities, etc. Not just a new level. This game is about nothing else but dying a lot. Though I changed my mind on this game since this post.
@@SimonO1919 Not really that I'm a thinker, just that you're not much of one :D Jokes aside, I sort understand what you mean. I disagree with it and think Celeste does a phenomenal job switching up it's gameplay with all the different ability objects found in different levels, but I can understand it. all hail the whale isn’t that the point though. By not giving the background it allows anyone who suffers from depression to fill in the blanks. It brings the story closer to those who are playing it.
all hail the whale They did not tell us a lot of things actually but it is implied, for example one time Madeline was saying how she wanted to do something right for once and could mean that she thinks shes a failure
The summit is my favorite fi al level of any game period
Only game where the cutscenes are fun to watch, even after seeing them several times. Cutscenes are boring in Mario and intrusive in Zelda.
My new favorite game on Switch... such a deep and memorable experience.
Took me 11 hours to beat will def do more
I got this game for free in the Epic games store and I'm not enjoying it tbh, I want a nice and fun game to enjoy and Celeste is so hard for me 😞
This is an old comment, but I wanted to say, given your hollow knight profile picture I would imagine that your opinion on hard but rewarding games has changed :)
@@connor.d.l not really :P (I may give it another chance tho)
also, I'm still struggling with Hollow Knight (even on my third save I still can't beat the nightmare Grimm and the path of pain T-T }
@@mohamedmoues8564 those are some of the very hardest parts of a hard game, don’t feel bad! Just having gotten there, you have beaten some super hard parts. I love both hollow knight and celeste so so much, and I would really recommend you give celeste another try at some point, I promise it’s worth it! :)
Meh, didn't enjoy that PC port. Prefer Pico-8 original.
Another 10, good job celeste
Well fuck you've convinced me
I put about nine hours into the game and saw it through to the end.
One of the best games of all times? No fucking way. Maybe of the best plataformeros and pixel art games
Hollow Knight - much better.
Two different games, there’s no comparison, both are great in their own way
I haven't played the game yet, and I'm totally going to do it soon, but Celeste to me isn't really or doesn't seem like the "Greatest game ever made".
Chris
What other games have that theme? I’m working on a game with a similar idea, and now I’m worried lol.
You can't be to quick to judge. This game is not fun to watch, it's fun to play most definitely.
@@godlyvex5543 ok chief yknow what i was with you on everything until you said smb soundtrack are bad, and i mean i love celeste soundtrack but smb soundtrack is just so thrilling and amazing, i mean smb sound design-wise isnt that great but the composition of the songs is just
Woohoo Celeste getting dat shout out
This game is great, but I think a 10 is a bit much. I’d give it a 9. Great game... but one of the greatest of all time? Nah
Accurate title
People STILL can't explain _why_ it's supposed to be so good, or what makes it so special 😑
It still sounds like a mass hysteria fandom.
While I do think it's a great game, I also think it's highly overrated
Thomas Jansen Maybe your right but atm we just need another game to overrate that is not Fornite lmao
@@guywithglasses5309 true
Personally this is one of my if not favorite games of all time up there with god of war.
It is nothing compared to Yoshis island on snes :) yes i know its not a fair comparison.
What have the Gaming Bolt guys been Smoking!!
Do you have any valid criticisms?
Amazing game!
Me gusta que los videojuegos tengan titulos en español,CELESTE por ejemplo.
Y gran juegazo por cierto.
;)
En realidad está basado en una montaña Canadiense del mismo nombre

Talk more about social issue .
Trying to find life lessons in a frickin video game - Haha ha ha ha! Give me an effin break.
You lose all credibility when you call this game gorgeous.
it is, things can look pretty and not be 4k lmao
Great game, but wtf is this gameplay lol
All i see you is dying a lot
AnGEl HisPANo Funny, I see him learning a lot.
8/10
One of the lamest suckiest games ever. I just finish playing this. 4/10 and that’s only the sound. This game is trash ass trash
I love it
that clickbait title :D :D :D
Not clickbait. It's the opinion of a lot of people. Does not have to be your opinion.
So the game’s splash image can be considered clickbait now? You sure the reason they used the game’s art is because the video is about the game?
Nah, not click bait. Definitely one of the best games I’ve ever played.
I can’t beat core b-side...
Meh
Did you even played it
Yes, as I said, I was being chased by the hotel manager.
@@SimonO1919 Not really that I'm a thinker, just that you're not much of one :D
Jokes aside, I sort understand what you mean. I disagree with it and think Celeste does a phenomenal job switching up it's gameplay with all the different ability objects found in different levels, but I can understand it.
EDIT: Also it's not dying that's the focus, it's overcoming challenges and improving.
Call me a madman, I didn’t really like Celeste. I think it’s heavily overrated and kind of generic.
Please understand that opinions exist. Don’t get butthurt over my opinion. Also discuss if you want
No need to discuss - you're a dork.
Why didn't you like it
To be fair, any game that isnt triple A is a great game.
Bartosz Skorupa Nah.
Bartosz Skorupa I know that triple-A titles haven’t been the best, but there are MANY bad indie games.
Not true, but the indie games that get a lot of attention are usually great.
Bartosz Skorupa Troll and I was shit

Agreed
It look okish
Yeah sure, "One of the Greatest Games Ever Made" ( rolls eyes ).
Ahh, a non believer.
Play the game buddy, and you'll realize how wrong you are
TheDuckClock it’s good but come on, not best of all time ever. It just feels wrong giving that title to any game, really
Lemon Sweat at the rate it's going it most certainly is. Hell The Game Awards tweeted that the game is already in the running for GOTY 2018 and it's only February. They barely ever do that.
Yeah, maybe is one of the greatest PLATFORMERS out there, but that doesn't mean is one of the GREATEST GAME EVER MADE. My problem isn't with the game but with the statement.
Gheorghe Negrean
No his statement is spot on. Go play the game it's really REALLY good.
Hyperbole
Joe Bailey there is a tiny bit of exaggeration in this video
Just a tiny bit
This review is for sale! Seriously dude, stop that shit. Unsubscribed :(
Comment is edited. Still makes no sense. What do you mean it's for sale? He has the same opinion as a ton of people.
I agree with momo. Talk intelligibly, or don't talk at all.
Bruh the indie devs at celeste dont have the money to buy reviewers.

SassyRiolu. That's pretty funny considering I've never played a single Assassins Creed game. I could never see what people liked about AC.
Best game ever? Not even close.... It inst bad but the best ever? nah
Really late, but you must not have had ears or eyes. He called it "ONE of the best".
Joining the IGN bandwagon I see
Except this game also has 10/10 on steam. You act as if only a small minority like the game.
Yeah, games that are good tend to have good scores. Who woulda thunk it?
+The Kingslayer You completely missed my point.
