Celeste's Hidden Tutorial

- Celeste isn’t an easy game. Lucky there are things that make it easier. There’s obvious stuff like the assist mode. Then there’s less obvious things like coyote time. And if you look deep enough, there’s a subtle, practically hidden part of Celeste, that makes the whole game a little easier. I could call it a lot of different things but, it boils down to a hidden tutorial. Hidden in plain sight. And it’s not like those other, invisible tutorials, where the game puts you an a new situation with a clean solution. No. Celeste’s hidden tutorial is a bit more complicated than that. So in this video, I'll explain how this tutorial teaches you to use different objects, with similarities.

I misinterpreted wormwood at first due to badeline, and thought it turned to sludge after a second or 2, and thus was rushing through the levels thinking I had limited time
lol same. i think i was comparing it to badeline
@@Daisyisnotaflower ummmmk
So you're saying badeline is a bad tutorial
@@nahometesfay1112 more that celestial resort was not the best way to follow up the badeline section. But I absolutely loved that section, so I say its more on the Celestial resort
Yea, there needed to be a puzzle where you had to wait on it. Like, jump on a (blue) key and wait for a spiked wall to slide out of the way. Easy but, it makes sure you understand how it actually works before letting you continue.
I just realized the oshiro boss fight prepares you for the snowballs which both of those together prepares you for the seekers
they all have the jump on it and regain dash mechanic, the oshiro boss has the dash, the snowballs let you practice the jumping off them, and when you see the seeker dash in chapter 5 you know somewhat how to avoid it
edit: or maybe the snowballs prepare you for the jumps you have to do off the slow moving ice things all throughout chapter 8
interacting with the snowballs and oshiro is optional so its a lot less well done than the other ones
@@an_annoying_catjumping off oshiro becomes mandatory on the C side (and maybe the B side I don’t remember)
@@RioRock7 only the c side, though thats too little too late
@@an_annoying_cat yeah
6:45 what do mean that jellyfish dont have a connection with anything? they work identically to theo in chapter 5, just with floaty physics
Yeah I think you’re right! The whole grabbing an object and needing to toss it around. Never thought of that. Good catch.
they are basically theo but actually helpful
@@lemons38 Theo is helpful in the emotional department
@@lemons38 Theo activates buttons, key coins, gives you wild movement options, and is a shield against seekers, he's already helpful >:(
/hj
Also that floaty movement is like the upwards facing wind in the summit!
Oshiro is connected to snowballs.
now you understand!
And the eye monsters in mirror te.ple
And both teach you how to avoid Badeline's lasers in Reflection.
This has to be a second channel. This is 875K sub quality. Dude, you’re a chad.
Well thanks!
oddly specific number
@@falpsdsqglthnsac But extremely accurate for some reason.
Another thing that i’ve noticed is that snowballs and Oshiro are teach you about the mechanics of ice-fireballs in core (also the bouncers are exactly the same)
Uh you're reaching so much. The only similarity they have is the super mario bounce. Thats it
@@pirilon78They recharge your dash though, like a bubble or a bumper(or how did tou call this circle pushing things again?), or a fireice thingy
Clouds are connected to the zipper/dash blocks too by having a specific time that when you jump it boosts you.
and u know the lava blocks in core? thats like the cloud and bumper together
As a heads up, the creator goes by Maddy! She's trans, and named Madeline after herself!
From the Twitter bio she had when this person showed her Twitter it seems she went by both names at the time
Panga, a SMM2 and Kaizo Mario legend, has talked about the "formula" for SMM levels recently: introduce a gimmick, teach the player the basics, and then make them learn new techniques with the gimmick. It's similar to zippers in 1A and Dash Activated Blocks in 5A: Introduce objects that give Madeline momentum, then mix it up a bit. The formula is very useful and makes for incredibly fun levels to play and watch :)
did not expect a panga reference here
Another example I love is how the Theo Crystal kind of teaches you how to use the jelly in Farewell, you have to carry both of them, throw both of them in similar ways to move, you can dash into both of them. Someone else did talk about this in the comments, but I thought I'd give my take anyways. Great video!
I'm rooting for this video to be picked up by the Gods of RUclips algorithm.
Be grateful, for they answered.
I always liked this type of 'leveling tutorial' (at least, thats what I'm calling it) where it never *outright* tells you 2 things work alike, instead they give you something easy to learn, then add a little something to make it harder, then when you get used to that, do it again and again without you ever realizing it. It kinda feels like the scene in dragon ball with goku taking off the weighted clothes, where you don't realize how far you've gotten until you get there. At first, you struggle with the traffic light blocks, then you immediately understand how the dash blocks work, then next thing you know you're a master. Always liked that type of intentionally gradual growth.
6:55 i think dream blocks are still a part of this in a way in bsides csides and farewell. The game teaches you how the dream blocks work in chapter 2 but then in bsides (and others) the game expands upon this by teaching you about jumping out of them for extra height and about the ability to grab on to one right after coming out of it. It’s much easier to understand this because you already know the fundamentals of the dream blocks just like the other object connections. Even though it’s the same object it is very much the same idea imo
I like the way you're thinking
the dream blocks also feel like an extension of the dash to me
and then mods teach you dreamhypers, ultras (which are just chained hypers), supers, neutrals, etc.
I noticed most of this stuff playing through the game the first time. It’s something that seems obvious at first, like of course the later mechanics are going to build off of easier to understand older mechanics, but the more you think about it, actually putting those mechanics into an actual game and having the difficulty curve flow as you gain knowledge and understanding is something I tip my metaphorical hat to.
Yeah it's a kinda of silly idea, but it's sorta cool too. Glad you liked it!
this is that "its obvious it should be done" type thing, not an obvious "does it itself thing". These types of things usually take a lot more time to do than the non-obvious but fun mechanics that come out of nowhere. It was probably easier to think of the traffic block than the dash block just because a new idea is easier than a better/harder iteration while keeping the original idea fun. Mad props to Maddie for doing it so well!
The snowballs may actually be a tutorial for another game. There's a Pico 8 cartridge of the original Celeste, and also a Pico 8 for a 'Celeste 2' where the main mechanic is a grappling hook that lets you pull yourself forward. A segment of the game similar to the Golden Ridge has you using the grapple to grab snowballs, then throw them and bounce on them to reach the end of certain screens.
i’m pretty sure 2 is also an original game from a different game jam
hell yeah, I'm always down for a good celeste love letter. btw, a quick point out. please do not refer to Maddy as Matthew, Maddy came out as nonbinary like I think 2 years ago and changed their name to Maddy, being called Matthew makes them very uncomfortable
If I mention them again, I certainly will call Maddy, Maddy. Thanks for the input.
Based on the Twitter names shown, this looks like it was actually before she came out as exclusively Maddy. I didn't actually know there was a time when she went by both names at once. And yeah, it's annoying to see her referred to by her deadname, sometimes it even makes videos about celeste hard to watch, but they were just doing what they were told was best at the time, I can't blame them for that
who cares
@@alan-hz1to Most people with a brain cell count higher than their age
@@thatotherandrew_ Im using this.
Wow, i not expected THAT from 15 subs youtuber, amazing work!
Glad you enjoyed it! ^^
i think the snowballs are connected to mr oshiro. they both come from the edge of the screen, and you can jump off both of them. plus, mr oshiro is connected with the mirror dimention monsters
The “mirror dimension monsters” are called “seekers”, for your information.
Those pieces of “sludge” are called dust bunnies. Yes really.
Feather and jellyfish both include aerial movement, so I would say they have some connection
6:51 Are you kidding me? The snowballs and Oshiro are super connected. Both are round objects that fly horizontally at you (or rather the place you were a second ago) to kill, but if you jump on top of them you get your dash back. They also happen at regular intervals Pretty much the only differences are the side of the screen they come from, and the telegraphing
This is kind of a massive stretch, but the green bubble COULD help the player be better at using the red bubble.
Feels weird seeing them use the devs dead name but I guess she wasn't fully out at the time
the theo crystal prepares you for the jellyfish
I just looked down to see this channel only has 130 subs and I'm actually annoyed at how low this is, there are channels with thousands of subs that put in less effort than this. This is spectacular quality and the kind of thing I would expect from a channel with 800k subs. This has inspired me.
Thanks for the kind words.
Killer Snowballs work exactly like Killer Oshiro though, so it’s still kind of connected
I'd argue you can definitely make a connection between the dream blocks and the red bubbles in that your dash is restored once you exit, allowing you to reach certain spots and/or avoid obstacles at the end of their path
It’s really cool to see the hidden design of such a great game, nice video!
the snowballs (ch 4) are probably connected to oshiro's battle form (ch 3)
6:45 I love that the example that you choose to say that this not apply to every object is ACTUALLY an evolution of Theo in the Crystal 😂
My greatest blunder
@@SubIndy That just proves that the game can always surprise us ;)
in my head, the snoballs work off oshiro, which is then explored further by the seekers from chapter 5.
and dream block work similarly to kevinblocks as platforms you have to dash into to interact.
in the case of snowballs, the progression goes clearly telegraphed and chasing you in the same direction you are going, making bonking it easy, to harder to predict ones coming againsg you, making the timing harder, to freely moving obstacles that chase you
and for dreamblocks it goes from platform you have dash into to go the same way you dashed, that you can platform around like a normal block to get your bearings before dashing, to a platform you dash into to go the opposite way, that you then HAVE to platform around once you dash to use.
Dimension is the perfect song he could've used for the intro, very good job.
dashing out of red bubbles teaches you about dashing out of badeline and the bird in farewell
hell yaaas creo music is so cool @_@ nice of you to use it :)
And super vid as well :D
Dream blocks are connected back to dash crystals, the way they can be chained together and each returns your dash. Dream blocks connect forward to feathers, being a form of extended faster movement. Dream blocks restrict you to straight lines in specific zones, where the feather only gives you a timer.
Dream blocks in the B-side are also where dream jumps are introduced, which connect back to how momentum works in zippers and dash blocks, and connect forward to the way you can take momentum from your own dashes in wallbounces and wavedashes.
They're actually plenty connected. :)
So much effort was put in this video, definitely deserves a sub
man if i watched this without seeing how many subs you had, i would've thought this was made by a 500k subs channel, you're really underrated
the black blizzard creo jumpscare omg 🤪🤪
Snowballs are actually connected to the oshiro boss fight because they always appear directly in front of you every 2-3 seconds just like oshiro flies in your direction from behind.
Dude this channel is underrated!
great video and great editing! good job with it! subbed :)
This was a great video and it needs more recognition.
1:18 we Makin Outa Black blizard with this one
Great video! Makes you think even more about the player's experience!
This was fantastic, I’m definitely subscribing for future content.
More to come! Sometime soon-ish.
@@SubIndy take your time man
also theres always atleast 1 room that has an easy use for an object before they implement it in harder jumps
editing is on point !
killer snowballs function pretty much identically to core ice balls, and also kinda like seekers and pufferfish because they can only be touched from above and otherwise they kill/launch you
I did not expect to hear Exosphere right after watching creo’s new song. Great video and soothing narrating voice :>
I also love how core teaches you to manage well your dashes, because in B and C sides all dashes are necessary, no more, no less
Why does this have so little views.
My channel is currently a hidden gem. ;) Please share.
Will do.
Theo is the tutorial for jelly fish. You carry both, but the jelly fish give you what you need to plane.
I loved this video so much, especially your sense of humour lmao
When you said that the ziper only apears on chapter 1A, B and C sides, it also apears on chapter 9, but in a diferent texture.
That "What else are you hiding from us, [REDACTED]?" Physically hurt me
i missed it- where was that at?
@@chrissysonicutdrloz 0:46, he didn't actually say [REDACTED], of course, he said Maddy's deadname, but hearing the full name, with so much emphasis and stuff, was uncomfy. Through no fault of his own, of course, he didn't do anything wrong, it's just hard to watch when it's outdated
Man i want to learn editing like you do. This is amazing
the clouds are introducing the lava blocks from chapter 8, they both giving a momentum in the oposite direction you touched them
snowballs are related to oshiro and ice lumps in the core
the mushroom is a lot like theo rlly, picking up an object, where u cant dash while holding it, but can dash into it and pick it up mid dash. all connected
Dude this video is amazing! you're so underrated, the quality of this video is amazing, you've outdone yourself and earned a sub and notification bell
but may i add the clouds are more closely related to the lava block things!
i noticed this the most with the oshiro fight, the snowballs, the seeker enemies, and the pufferfish all working similarly, with bouncing on the top half having a different interaction then the bottom half. though i do think that since the hidden tutorial of bouncing on oshiro and the snowballs being optional makes you a lot less prepared for the seekers
Killer snowballs are similar to oshiro
You can jump on them to regain your dash and some height, and both occasionally fly across the screen.
was I the only one who didn't know it was called wormwood?
You say that the snowball is random and unrelated, but it's just like Mr. Oshiro in chapter 2, just from the front not the back
re dream blocks and bubbles: both give you your dash back
however, I gotta dispute springs/clouds; you don't have to time anything with a spring. what clouds relate to more is the lava blocks that launch you in core
I learned the bumpers because in level 5 when you jump on one of the little eye things they drop an egg that explodes and bounces you in the same way
1:18 Extreme ptsd when dimension started playing
song at 1:17 to 1:28 is Dimension by Creo, for those wondering
i just finished climbing to the summit on bsides and i SWEAR thats where i thought this was going . good video!
I though Wile e Coyote was a timeless classic. I'm shocked people growing up don't know about him anymore.
actually, the jellies work like Theo, and you learn how to deal with killer snowballs from how oshiro is dealt with.
Why aren't you at like 100k subs yet? This is amazing!
"old cartoon caracter" made me feel old
Mr. Oshiro got you ready for the snowballs
wow. good video for the number of subs. this is quality stuff right here
Baseline in reflection is connected to snowballs and Mr. Oshiri battle since they both shoot directly at you, it’s jsut that badeline shoots it from any angle
1:17 BLACK BLIZZARD SONG WTF I CANT ESCAPE GD
you
Creo - Dimension for the intro music. The best EDM producer I would say.
"I found out it's a reference to an old cartoon character" thanks you just gave me ten wrinkles and two hundred gray hairs...
6:49 Small nitpick, I'd argue the killer snowballs actually build rather well on Oshiro from the previous level and to a lesser extent help build up the Seekers in the next one.
Great video!
Your completely right. And thanks!
Great video!
Thanks!
You said that jellyfish are an example of something that doesn't fit into this progression, but they're pretty similar to the Theo crystal.
surprised you mentioned snowballs as a sort of one-off thing considering the previous level had Oshiro
Yeah, somehow didn’t notice at the time.
Wow that was amazing, I loved watching it.
Glad you liked it!
This video was excellent, I hope more people find this channel because that sub count needs more digits
Thank you, thank you.
1:17 i did not expect for creo - dimension to play here
The script/voiceover for this video wasnt great but wow! The visuals were really well made! Keep it up!
I’ve always known that Celeste had some part of this tutorial, but I didn’t know it stretches to so many things.
There’s another game called Grime that has some “do a thing to make a platform move and also if you jump at the right time it can and will launch you” just came to mind.
Oh that dimension in the beggining hit hard
i knew about coyote time and i didn’t know they had a twitter
That pokemon edit must've taken so long. That does not go unnoticed :D
Omg, dude, you’re literally the first person to comment about the Pokemon sequence. I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since I posted the video! I think it took me like two whole days to make it look just right. Finally, the Pokemon X Celeste thing has been acknowledged and respected. Thank you.
@@SubIndy :)
I did not expect a creo song when I started watching this
I mean snow blocks are just the same as the hotel owner guy who chases you. Both go in straight lines, both chases you while your on the screen to your last known position.
And both you can evade or bounce off of to gain your dash back. Both can help with getting more range or strawberries. They share almost everything in common in a mechanical since.
And the hotel owner gets you prepared for the snow balls of doom.
The snowballs might be similar to Oshiro? Jumping on its top, moving in a straight line, killing you.
I absolutely love this about Celeste. I am not really a hardcore gamer esp in a type of game like this, but I found myself naturally improving a lot and it's thanks to Celeste's amazing game design.
I only now learned that Badeline isn't rushing to catch you but only follows. I've died way too many times just because I was hurrying to "not get caught".
6:43 well i mean the jellyfish is kinda similar to theo in chapter 5, you have to hold grap to keep them, when you let go you throw them in front of you, you cant climb while holding them, you cant dash while holding them, the killer snowballs are kinda similar to oshiro in the chapter 3 bossfight, flings directly at you in a straight horizontal line, you can bounce on it to make it disappear, gain a bit of height and a dash, they always come toward you at your exact y position, they respawn every couple of seconds, really the only major difference is the fact killer snowballs come from the right side of the screen, both oshiro and killer snowballs are kinda similar to seekers too but this link is a little less obvious. also while theres no direct link between dream blocks and any other mechanic, they help you understand momentum and wave/hyperdashing in 2b when you learn dreamblock jumping
6:50 i think snowballs work in a similar way to oshiro
both track your position and go in your direction
if they touch you, you die
but if you get on top of them they reset and you regain your dash
same way as the seeker is like oshiro but for all directions
The flying snowballs could be linked to mr oshiro
