In tropical Africa, lions that lived in mountainous areas, were known for having bigger manes than lions in lower altitudes, because mountainous areas are colder than the rest of Africa. Wild Asiatic lions in the past also had manes like this, they mainly lived on mountains in Western Asia (Iran, Iraq, Syria,ect) and the forests of Eastern Europe. So manes like this was very common in the past, but now very few wild lions have it, because most of them live in hot tropical areas. Only some live in temperate areas, like the mountainous Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater or parts of Southern Africa.
