  • This is a video of the Asiatic lions at Paignton Zoo which I filmed on Friday (20.01.12), strangely during the last fours years of going to Paignton Zoo I had never seen the male lion being active. Therefore this is the first time I had ever seen him do more than lift his head and quite surprisingly he is very energetic. (It is worth noting that this footage of filmed at different times of day during my visit which explains the differences in light levels.)
These lions are Asiatic lions as per the zoo's website www.paigntonzoo...

These Lions are Asiatic, the only reason why he has such a mane is due to cold climate which was the same reason why Barbary lions had it. Sub Saharan Lions have also been able to grow manes like this, mainly in high altitude habitats with the exception of southern Africa, in some areas it does get cold in winter, for example, in this video these are wild southern African lions called the Ngamo pride ruclips.net/video/k6-01RRwVtA/видео.html, as you see the male has a big mane even reaching his belly.

Yes it's Indian. But my point is, every lion can look like this in colder climates. Many African lions in mountains had this mane, many Middle Eastern lions in mountains had this mane, so Indian lions that lived in mountains would've had it too.
Anyway, it's a climate thing, not a Barbary lion thing, so I'm glad you know the truth like me. By the way, I'm an African from Tanzania, it was nice talking to you my Indian friend.

    • @vijaynagaraj3674

No. According to recent study it's gene diversity which is lacking in wild. Gir lions can have this if they are bred with captive lions

      @@vijaynagaraj3674
Dude, lions in Ngorongoro Crater Tanzania have long full manes and yet many of them are inbred, so that's clearly not true for them, plus they live in a cool mountainous climate. Look up "lion mane linked to climate" on Google, you'll find out how observations made found that lions in cool/cold climates develop longer fuller manes than in hotter (year-round) climates, that's why Indian lions in European zoos or North America are able to grow it like that.
Remember, those captive Indian lions grew up in a very different climate to wild Indian lions in the Gir, much colder climates of course, so it's clearly not a coincidence that they look different. This same thing applies to captive African lions too.

  • @thejattlord

Definitely Asiatic / Indian lions. You can easily see the ears with them, and are generally a little bit balder on the top. The thickness of the mane varies. In colder climates, the mane can get as thick as a Barbary lion's, except on top of the head where it might grow to as much as an African lion's. The hairy fold under the belly can be either Asiatic or Barbary, but Barbary usually also have hairy cuffs around their elbows.

Is called a belly fold bro, but I don't see it on these subspecies because the male has hair all the way down his belly as well, even the lioness doesn't have the belly fold because she's husky as well, I do believe these are Indian or Asiatic lions as well because of the tail cuff which is fuller than that of typical African lions.

The manes are unusually large, I guess. But it definitely doesn't have as much on top of its head, so another point for being an asiatic. Also, people have to keep in mind that those in the gir forest suffers terrible inbreeding and they are not representative of what might have been their looks. Most artwork depicting the asiatic lion has large manes but baldish on top unlike the African ones.

Gir forest lions have small manes because of the hot climate, so inbreeding has nothing to do with it. I've seen genetically messed up lions in zoos, and they still have large manes. The depictions of Asian lions you're talking about are from places like Iran, where the climate is temperate and a lot colder than the Gir forest.
