My God is the model that's featured in the beginning of this video beautiful. Just gorgeous in every way. Great video as always, Matt.
Thanks! I try to find the best models I can ..my goal is to publish a book of the most beautiful models I can find.
Nice to see father Leica and mother Leica.😊
Quite a story in this video.
Thanks for sharing and a great weekend 🎉
Thanks Rob!
Hey Matt. Through out my entire life as a photographer, i have used, 35mm,2 1/4, 4X5, 8X10. All for different reasons. Luckily early on, i got a 500cm. LOVE the square format. Most of my Advertizing photography was done with Hasselblad. But, my underwater work was shot on a Nikonos lll film camera. When i shot interiors, the Sinar 8X10 was used. Back in those days,we used the camera for †he job. NOW , beginners are hung up on make of camera. They are not Pro,s.
Thanks Robert! Yes I feel once you experience different cameras (and formats) it's then easier to apply the "right tool" to the job.
Finally you got your hands on the camera Hasselblad H. I myself actively use the H4D. and for walking there is the smallest DSLR olympus e400. It has an old CCD matrix, a user-friendly interface and weighs about 400 grams with a 25/2.8 lens. If you remember the film days, then the camera for every day was the Yashika FX-2000 & Carl Zeiss planar 1.7. But the days of film are gone, as are those technologies. After all, by and large, you even scan film and it becomes a digital image.
Yes, I've had the H2 some years. I love it. It replaced my previous H3D-31 which sadly died during a sea shoot in Poland. Luckily the film back survived + lens so I swapped the 31MP back for a H2 + new prism.
I noticed a Yashica TLR in that shop you visited... can't recall the exact model but that was the first make and type of camera I ever used.
Great! Yes they had so many TLRs in that shop. Very cool!
Ultimate small carry camera with fun process and great results: Rolleiflex 3.5 or 2.8! Ok maybe not that small but convenient form factor, plus I see they have them in that store so you could pick it up next time ;)
Thanks Thomas, yes good point, TLR are great for a compare big negative setup. I did the same for my last Poland trip. (Always too many cameras to mention!) :)
If your father had a pitch fork in his hand in the first photo, and it would have looked like the Portrait American Gothic! LOL. great look there. I love it! They are good sports!
Great call! I Googled it as I'm less educated in the arts and I totally see it. I need to flip my image haha :). Yes they're awesome.. but would equally be very embarrassed if they new I'd posted this for the world to see.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom It's an American painting and wouldn't expect a Brit to know it I doubt that many Americans would know it either. LOL
😂 great minds... thought the very same
Matt have you ever done a video on the different types of lighting kit for fast/slow or lightweight/heavyweight, travel/uk scenarios for model shoots or non-model shots? Could be an interesting one for those like me who have limited experience of flash and light ‘modifiers’….
Thanks for all your engaging videos!!
Hi David, most of my Patreon BTS video's are teaching lighting. There seems to be limited interest here but I try to sneak a light video in every so many months. Most viewers are not light users I think. I've not done what you ask specifically but if you see enough BTS videos you see I often use the same kit over and over.
Cameras are tools. One needs the right one for the right job for the best results. Now to answer your question my all around camera: (film) M6 + Voigt 35 f 1.5 or 35 summicron asph. (Both lenses for quality and compactness). M10 for digital.
Thanks Bruno, yes I enjoy picking the tool for the job. M10 + small 35mm. Nice.
Nice breakdown of your cameras and their use cases. Thanks Matt
Thanks Kev!
Nice camera bag!
Thanks Andre! Yes I love it! I've used for every overseas trip since getting it last year, the 18L + 3.5L combo
One more good video... One of the best
Channel in the world!
One of your fan from France
Thanks! Very kind!
After several 4x5-intensive episodes, it's nice to have a "reality check" video! I sometimes enjoy taking my time with photography, but I'd rather spend that time exploring, looking, and thinking than on unpacking and erecting photographic apparatus (although the old-time news photographers could get their Speed Graphics into operation in seconds.) Now I'm just waiting for Future Matt to reveal that digital photos can be just as considered, consequential, and artistically worthy as those made from dead cows, and without all that worry about going through airport scanners!
Thanks James :) There is a solution for those wanting the best of both. It's not for me at this stage in my photography but I'll share it in a Patreon post.
Another good post. If you understand your subject you can explain it simply, QED. As a hack amateur I have had to purchase fewer cameras and make the work more. The M9 - X2D is a sweet spot but as I have noted the Pixii does great color. It is not the same Kodachrome color as the M8/M9 but it is a vibrant color and close to the X2D. David Barth has tuned the Pixii sensor well.
Thanks for a good vid. I always enjoy them and each time l;earn a bit more about what and how you do your work. And you are are getting great at it. And looking at the hotel rooms and exteriors you work with you are a master of make-do's doing well. Hats off to you. Cheers
Thanks Sandy! Yes it was a very basic apartment (like for students I think haha) but I only need the light and can do the rest. I'll do a BTS video for Patreon.
The Real Reason not Shooting Medium Format is when viewing pictures from the past, I never see anyone smiling. Maybe it is that they have been sitting for awhile for the picture to be done. Cheers!
Yes
The shutter is open very long such as 30-60 seconds in the “old” days with their big cameras and the very slow film ISO ASA or glass chemistry that people could not SMILE for 30-60 seconds. Therefore everyone had no happy looks. Thank you
LF, but yes it's a different style. I still plan to do LF portraits so I'm looking forward to the challenge!
Luckily with modern films and faster glass it's now very possible to get decent LF portraits I think, stay tuned!
@@richardsimms251 I believe that it was also considered somewhat gauche to smile in the sense that this photo is for posterity, so don't ham it up!
@@KristopherHooper- Also, people had worse teeth. Wasn’t the done thing to show them.
Try a Minox 35ML when you're running. The lens is incredibly sharp!
Thanks Ian, I know of it. My lightest is my Bessa L camera but I tend to use interchangeable lens setups.
Matt,
"Inexperience makes all cameras slow and big".
To make atrip abroad for scouting new models, but avoiding to act like an amateur,
who suffers the pain of a heavy, bulky and slow camera, he just bought,
All you need is a digital camera wih an APS-C sensor plus a decent 18 - 55 mm lens.
For the early morning run, get yourself an analog Olympus Pen D or an Olympus Pen EE-3
For my trips abroad I take wth me a Linhof Technika 5x7, a Hasselblad 500 C/M,
an Olympus OM-2n and an Olympus Pen EE-3.
The Linhof Technika camera has a range finder system, coupled by calibrated cams to the lenses of different focus and brands. The framing is done by finders, mounted in the cold
shoe on top of the camera. Backs with 10 inch wide roll films can be mounted on the Technika.
The photographer with enough experience with his 4x5 camera will love his camera.
The press photographer who managed to capture three incredible images in roughly 47 seconds as the German zeppelin Hindenburg burned to the ground at Lakehurst New Jersey USA in 1937, prooved to be a real professional. During those 47 seconds, when other photographers present shot one photograph at the most, Murray Becker quickly exposed three negatives using his 4x5 Speed Graphic camera. The following day pictures of the event were reproduced in thousands of newspapers around the globe.
Thanks Jaco, appreciated. Yes I have my APS-C Leica CL as my small setup!
Whenever I shoot with models, I always create an invisible boundary that I need to be done in two hours. Of course that is particularly true if I booked a paid model, but for some reason I often apply the same logic on non-paid shoot. I also used to try to do three looks/outfit per session, so that further added even more pressure to move quick. Of course, the eye-tracking R5 let me do that at ease, and I will even say I can do that with M camera now too. However, when I got my Century Graphic and I called up my friend to do a shoot with just one look, I really get to enjoy "photography" rather than "the result". We photographed for almost 3 hours, M digital, roll film backs and 10 sheets of instax in 2x3 holders. So now, I do two looks more often; and if I decided to bring more than two cameras, I do one look and just take my time.
Thanks Rex! Yes I do multi-camera multi-look shoots. I would be scared to agree 1 look with a new model in case it doesn't suit them. I ask for more clothes then select the outfits that work best for them. You (we) can do some much with clothes to enhance their appearance.
Awesome kit there Matt my day job in newspapers is canon 1dx kit for personal stuff I use all sorts I love medium format folders I love the Q2 my xpro2 infrared converted and now love my canon L3 with an Elmar 3.5 great fun Prague looks awesome. Great vid as always cheers
Thanks Paul!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom all good mate
Peter is awesome. i learned a good bit trying to clone his setups in a small space last year.
Yes, good guy! I have a small space video I still need to share from a few months ago. I'll try to share it soon to give you another viewpoint to work with. (Peter is like me, we both just need light and can make the rest work!.. but he has been doing it much longer and at a higher level!)
I've been shooting action sports with an 8x10 since 1974. I'm really close to getting my first shot!
Haha nice! :). Or maybe first shot with them in the frame and sharp :)
I shot similar model pix, long ago! Models needed head shots and full figure etc. Tried 4x5, hated it! Linhof Color. Found I shot too many frames, with 35mm! So started with borrowed Rolleiflex. One roll sufficient! If models wanted more, we discussed. Digital makes it easier! One has many choices! The phone great. Great Video.
Thanks Jason and yes to MF being a happy middle ground!
The Konica Hexar (not the rangefinder) is terrific for taking film photos very quickly.
Thanks! I've not tried that one yet.
Very entertaining video. Thank you.
RS. Canada
Thanks Richard!
Thanks for another informative video! Could you list what lighting kit you travel with?
Thanks! Yes it's listed below the videos already, see my kit list. (It depends on the trip but you see my options listed for flash and LED. This was LED, next trip is flash).
Cheers from Prague ☺
Thanks! :)
Another very enjoyable video presentation. Family pics and the story were an added bonus. Would be interested to see info on that Nikkor lens you mentioned.
Thanks! I plan to use the Nikkor more today and do a short video for it as the next video.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Matt during the show you featured your Nikon FM3a with a flash unit on top. Can you advise which flash unit that is please as I am looking to purchase one for my camera
@@monochromebluess hi yes, see my kit list link below every video, they are Godoy triggers. Not sure if you can still get these old ones but there are newer versions.
I find it reassuring to see the continued support for the relevance of the original-version Leica M10. 🙂 Unless “citizen scientist” activities are on the itinerary, I can do it all with digital Leica M cameras, while leaving the big DSLRs and their specialized lenses at home. My favorite lens, for images of people, is the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH. If I want everything to fit within a rucksack, under the seat in front of me, on an airplane, I might well settle for an M10, an M Type 246, and as few as three M lenses, 21mm, 35mm, and 50mm. Any of them, or all, could be f/1.4, for low light/“speed,” if deemed necessary. I doubt that I would feel deprived. A nice thing about an M kit, however, is that it can be so easy to bring more than just three lenses, spreading their weight among pockets and belt pouches, to keep the bag light in weight.
Film is fun, but, for air travel, I doubt that I would bother, unless local support for film shooting existed, at or near the destination, and/or if interacting with local film-shooting community were to be a specific goal.
Thanks and yes still using my nice M10 (though it will soon be absent as need to go to Germany for repair). *Airlines don't weight "handbags" so you can load them up with lenses! :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I empathize; my M10 had to go to Leica USA in New Jersey for repair, though it was due to a mishap, while still quite new, no thanks to my clumsy self. That is how I came to buy an earlier-model M camera, my M Type 246 Monochrom, after already having an M10. Of course, the M 246 was still a current model, in 2018, and priced accordingly, though I bought my 246 pre-owned, from the Leica dealer in nearby Houston, Texas. (Houston Camera Exchange.)
Notably, the M Type 246 did/does not feel, at all, like a retrograde step. With no Bayer filter array over the sensor, the M 246 is free to not only outperform M Type 240, the 246 performs well alongside the M10, most notably with low-light, high-ISO shooting, and, of course, that pleasingly plump BP-SCL2 battery has admirable endurance, compared to the M10’s BP-SCL5.
hello Matt. what is the small lighting that you use for the model shoot?
See the my kit list below the video, I use different ones. Any will work.
Hi Matt , do you know the Tex Avery wolf ? I think I looked like it … with my tongue falling on my shoes… at 1:16… I am sorry but I didn’t catch any of your words after this time… I will wait for your next video for thinking to camera stuff… Matt your job is fantastic and you are a lucky guy. See you :).
Thanks, haha. Life it what you make it as they say. I make these events happen with lots of time and work in the background. Anyone can do it. We all chase the same end goal (with slight variations!)
😊
Thanks!
Servus Matt✌
Brilliant video at the start again👌, so do you have 4 cameras with you in Prague? to be honest, that would be too much for me. Sometimes when I'm travelling I often think about which one to take with me😁 But I usually go for it and take two with me, one lens each of course and an extra one. 28/35 are my absolute favourites and for the 240 a 50 or 58 Primoplan or the Zeiss Ultron as a little treat. Lg Anderl
Thanks! Yes if I'm shooting models I need (1) digital (2) film (3) big film ideally if space (4) for running. If none model trips I don't need digital so I can do 2 cameras, 1 big, 1 small, both film.
Hello Matt ^^ Finally my m4 came from CLA :3
Congrats! I hope you enjoy it :)
Any chance we could get a video dedicated to 35mm film stock and your favorites? I’m thinking of dusting off a yashica rangefinder to try my hand at film and was curious what your choices would be for different types of subjects or purposes
Hmm, possibly, my channel seems to have limited film interest but I'm trying to change that! I've made a note of your request, even if I mention it as part of a broader video. Stay tuned!
Another great vid Matty, are you familiar with work of Andre Kertesz ? He was a Hungarian Photographer.
Thank you! I'm not, I'm not well educated with photographers, I just shoot what I think looks nice, but I'll check him on Google, thanks!
And then there is me, who took his mamiya rb67 to Prague
Nice!! I did nearly take my RZ but the 67 back is slipping so I was going to take a 66 back, then I thought Hassy 500 as smaller then I thought Hassy 645 (H2) as I prefer non-squares for portraits! 😆
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom nice 😁
Looks like you did like it @ Škoda - do do I, am there at least twice a month JUST to walk through for fine feelings.
Tbh, spent there - say - 500 to 600k CZK (17 to 18k GB££) on my d90, d300s, d810 & Now sl2s (plus approx 2 dozens of lenses at least …).
Great store indeed.
Enjoy Prague next time too, regards from … Well, Prague 🖐🏻🖐🏻
Thanks and yes, great shop! It sounds like you are a very good customer :)
Hello from Prague.
Well, I used to be a solid customer; ever since SL2-S, I have slowed down a bit.
(Would like - one day - to get the M, so hopefully, one day …; also, will consider to get the 75/1.5 Nok (again); I had had one, got rid of it & probably should not have done that, nice lens).
Regards.
🖐🏻🖐🏻
Middle camera ; Rollei Wide Distagon 50mm F4 , and 75mm 3.5 Tessar , my primary film are those and M Leica , slower : EBONY Field , Shoot and go Crown Graphic. Still do digital but some odd reason I went looked at the new Leica , M 11 and M10 , the bodies ..there is something missing . In my hand the MA and M3 have that something.
Have fallen out of love with Digital , maybe Medium Format digital would work .... looking at the Leica SL 3 , but the buy in is high and unlike Film Analog these new bodies will wear to too , like Sony cameras do. I am no longer interested in the Sony , first migrated to Vintage Glass adapted ...to get a certain look then found myself with my F3 NIKON and the Crown Graphic ... unlike a body I had 18 years ago , a MINOLTA , 35mm .. I fell in love with the F3 , and even more with the Tessar MX-EVS ROLLEI , the bug bit me ...and yeah Matt , you helped me with that " affectation " in FILM .... As a young man I trained in Enlargement and Darkroom and loved my little private world , I also set up the type on Light Tables and using " Goldenrod " a gold masking paper , I burned the press plates for the HEIDLEBURG Press we had a lovely monster ... and the Chief Press machines that were half the size.
Well enough about the past except one last thing .. My Eldest sibling is a Fine Artists ...and won awards. So I suppose this runs in our family. Good video Matt . Christopher ~
Thanks Christopher, yes you have some nice film cameras and I'm happy you like them over digital (like me!) :)
What is that light you are using at @1:20 ?
See kitlist linked under every video. It's my usual small LED for travel (with usual travel stand setup for the smallest possible gear)(You can use any LED)*
It's nice to pick just the right camera for the occasion, isn't it? I'm much the same, and I like a really slow camera (I have a century-old 18x24cm contraption that I shoot dryplates etc with). And I should get my Linhof up and running again! But mostly I need speed and guaranteed results, so my professional work is done with all bells and whistles digital gear.
Thanks Filbert, yes! Agree, I usr digital to pay the models (with easy photos) then shoot film for me. (Dust off your Linhof! ..I'll try to inspire you soon, wink wink) ;)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Looking forward to it! I just have to fix an issue with the roll film holder. Getting on that today 🙂
I was recently in Fotoskoda ❤ great store!!! I have realized that you never use Mamiya cameras, don’t you like this brand? Greetings from the sunny Madrid.
Thanks Oscar, I do but perhaps less often. I sold my Mamiya 7 but still have the 6, 645 Super and RZ67. RZ is my fav of those and I tried to use it last week but the 67 back is slipping.
Heya Matty....would gladly invest in your presets but nobody makes them for Affinity photo...why would that be.Keep up the gr8 videos cobber.
Thanks, yes I've never heard of your software. Most people use Adobe (LR & PS) or CaptureOne. I think that covers 90%+ of people that I'm in contact with. Mobile users might use free software to start off with until they get into it.

Nice!
That was fun to watch, but, like most of your viewers I imagine, I only have two cameras, one film and one digital. It's enjoyable to watch someone else choosing which of their twenty cameras they're going to use today, but not very useful to me. Still, that your videos are enjoyable is their most important feature.
Thanks, great input. I knew this was only my cameras and my opinion but I thought it might provoke ideas/ inspire others if they felt their current workflow was not fulfilling (too fast/ too slow/ not enjoying the process etc). I just try to share as I learn myself.
oh fck....
i can feel with you
I lost a lot of cameras: a complete Habla equipment in Tübingen.
Robbery
a Nikon F2 in Paris
a Nikon F2 with 20 mm and 300 mm on the Bodensee (Germany)
(the boat capsized 180 degrees while photographing a regatta)
an last not least, a Nikon F2 at lake Keeyow (Iran)
(just forgot it, too much stress with the authorities)
it is always pure filth
Sorry to hear, I "lost" my Hasselblad H3D in the sea some years back, so now have the cheaper H2.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
hi again
and nothing is assured on the water
These H Cameras, not my choice.. i switched to X2D and some weeks ago to the 907 X / 100
They run pretty good with the old M lenses (especially 100mm) and with a rather cheap adapter i can use all nikon lenses (especially 1he 105 mm, my oldest and cheapest lens) its really pretty good and the 58mm noct.
I liked the blah blah blah part. Dude can talk
Haha, too many cameras to always compare to each other!
Sometimes photos of people don't need to be smil😊ywilly sometimes best photos are straight people sometimes iask my subjects not to smile
Thanks, ye for many of my photos I do non-smiles (like teaching today with a model) but for family I prefer it if it's supposed to be a happy feeling photo.
