- Many people pass by Barstow on their way to Las Vegas and other destinations, not knowing all of the exciting things to see and do around Barstow. Watch this virtual video tour that will point out some points of interest in Barstow, which is in the heart of the Mojave Desert.
I grew up in Victorville and George AFB when I was a kid. Nice area back in the 70's to grow up. I took a field trip with my class to Calico Ghost town in the 5th grade. I have been back a couple of times once passing though and once as a contractor at the near-by Army Fort. Nice video!
Thanks for watching & commenting. We'll have a video released shortly about Calico.
Thanks for taking me back to the good ole days of the 70s 80s 90s when I lived in SoCal - Riverside specifically . Florida is my home now
I usually just hike for hours and hours in the stretch of mountains behind the drive-inm theater, myself. Such a majestic beautiful place
Very nice! And thank you to BNSF Railway for employing many Barstow residents!
Love ❤️ the Barstow station McDonald’s and also the very nice Barstow-Daggett Airport!
Love this video and LOVE Barstow. Thank you!!
You're welcome Rose. Thanks for commenting!
I still love Barstow and Fort Irwin, thanks!
You're welcome!
Very cool video! Thank you for making it. I love Barstow. The town currently has some problems, but I think it will pull through and come out stronger on the other side.
Best wishes for Barstow - one of my favorite stops along Route 66.
Thanks for commenting! Reading your comment makes me smile after all the negative messages I see about Barstow. It seems Barstow always gets a bad rap for things beyond their control, but you're absolutely right, there are so many things to see and do in Barstow. I've spent a lot of time there and worked with a lot of great people there.
Very good video. Very interesting. I guess I'll have to get a trip to Barstow again.
My wife and I visited the city a very hot day in this summer, on our first visit to the USA, where we drove a few days on Route 66 - from LA and to Amboy, where we then drove south.
We came to see Bagdad Cafe (where we had breakfast), but found also an exciting area of America. We spent a night in Barslow and saw the city's paintings and beautiful old train station, but the museum (over Route 66) was unfortunately closed. Luckily we had before that seen the museum over 66 in Victorville, which we can highly recommend.
We look forward to more movies from your side of the area.
Best wishes Jan Oskar, Denmark
Thanks Jan! Next time you plan a trip, try to make it between Sept 15 and Nov 1, which is the best time of the year to visit the Southwest in my opinion. I feel the same way when we visit Europe! Bagdad Cafe is certainly not your typical U.S. diner. We actually live in Victorville, so we are so close to all the places you visited. You can see a video tour of the Route 66 museum plus other places along Route 66 on our blog. Just Google "BackRoadsWest trips blog". Happy travels!
welcome, albeit belatedly. it sounds like you and your wife had fun on your trip...and that is what trips are for after all. i have taken my current wife on side trips like yours, and had a terrific time. i hope you visit again, and have even more fun. carry on!!
Daggett
Rainbow Basin, Calico, Owl Canyon, etc., are not in Barstow. It is rather sad to see the town over run by homeless people, and all the small mom and pop stores closed. Barstow Mall in the 70's, 80's was the place to go in it;s hey-day. But now, it's sad to drive main street and see how much it run down. According to cityrating.com a 2016 report (latest) showed- The city violent crime rate for Barstow in 2016 was higher than the national violent crime rate average by 280.49% The town needs industry and an economical boost.
Thank you for your great and informative videos.
You're welcome!
I really enjoyed this video. Can you make a things to do in Compton
Sorry, not into going on tours of urban back roads...
You don't want to go there trust me, was stayin at a hotel in LA Bellflower, literally next to compton so i had to drive thru there to get to some places. Nothing but homeless bums and a bunch of crazy folks
Tnx for all your videos.
Area was hit hard by the burst housing market bubble. Super high rate of crime as a result of section 8 housing.
That Area is Know as Bat Country!!!
🌵😵🌵
Best thing about Barstow... is if you are here you’re just 2 hours away from Vegas. Lol
Best thing about Barstow is the area isn't as hectic and crowded as Vegas....
Obviously, there are a LOT of people who enjoy Vegas. Thank God, that keeps them out of my part of the world!
I like my weather hot and dry, so Barstow is great for me. 🙂
Walmart and McDonald's by the freeway is best thing.
The best part about Barstow is the city limit sign once you get past it.
I lived there in the 70 s it really is boring . An even then it was a town struggling
I remember in 1979, Johnny Carson making fun of Barstow.
LOL - I grew up and Burbank. I've heard him say several times "Daggett - gateway to Barstow". Hopefully you know where Daggett is.
Not much out in Daggett, used to be a busy place I was told by a couple coworkers at the depot i work at.
If I remember Carson had a bad experience with Barstow cops. Probably refused them free tickets to the Tonight Show.
Background music way too loud to enjoy what looked like an excellent video - too bad.
Never heard anyone complaining of the music to loud. Why don't you just turn the volume down?
@@BackRoadsWest1 Because when you turn the volume down, your voice also goes down. Most folks who have complaints like darkhorsejim don't have a set up like mine with very high quality external speakers. Music was not too loud for me, but them again my speakers give me the full range of frequencies. My only gripe about the music is the spot where the guitars are so out of tune with each other that it's painful. Yup, I'm a musician.
By the way, my family and I moved to Barstow clear back in '72 or '73. I graduated from BHS in '74. My dad still lives there, on Waterman St. The train tracks used to go right behind my house back then. I've been to every spot you've mentioned in your videos about the area, and a few more. Rainbow Basin and Owl Canyon are about the coolest. Some day I'll tell you about the prank, that wound up lasting for weeks that my mom and I played on a macho friend of hers in a mine off of Ft. Erwin Rd. We never knew the name of the mine but it could very well be part of the Waterman Mine.
@@jazzcatt Star Trek sucks
@@paulperez2005 If you don't like it, don't watch it. Sheesh!
Don't have to go to Las Vegas. Just go to the back of the 7-11 or cheap liquor store and bet which wine Falls off the wall first.
No more El Rancho . heart broken
Oh really, did it get torn down?
It happened on July 5 2022 but I believe they have no choice it's bad
Arson is suspected
The fire took out most of it
@@earlc8440 wow, it just happened. Arson? That's probably not that big of a surprise. But yea, another Route 66 icon is gone, like the Bun Boy.
Speaking as a Barstow resident for 55 years, beautiful photos and interesting video have NOTHING to do with Barstow being a desirable place to visit (or live). The town is run down and derelict with its only claims to fame being Del Taco and the place to pee on the way to Vegas. Don't waste your time. Keep driving!
That's funny, a family member of mine has been living in Barstow longer than you have and she has a completely different view, one that is a bit more positive. I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder. If you think negative, you see negative. You may not see it, but Barstow and the surrounding area has a lot going on.
Nah, she’s right, I speak from experience as well.
Like what going on? One of the most boring places on the planet with sand blowing in your nose eyes etc..hotter than hell , I have not been to hell however except this gosh awful place. Well to each their own.
I grew up in Barstow. There’s definitely not a lot going on, but I really don’t think the city is as bad as people are saying. I mean realistically, if you want to improve the city, get involved. 🤷♂️
Incidentally, to the person who said they’ve lived in Barstow 55 years and hated it....why on Earth would you live somewhere you hate for literally your whole life? That makes no sense.
All the jobs left Barstow (civilian jobs with military, the railroad, Yellow Freight) and that’s when Barstow really went downhill. It was never a desirable place to live, a lot of violence. Now, it’s gangs, drugs, crime. The downtown area used to be nice, now it’s boarded-up and burnt-out buildings. BTW, lots of people who live in Barstow and want to leave, can’t, for lots of reasons, so I wouldn’t be criticizing KnottyGirl.
Homeless people everywhere sad to see 60 year ladys sleeping on sidewalks. Shame on you barstow.
Is it really Barstow's fault that they are at the crossroads where many homeless people, known as hobos in the old day, congregate? I don't think so. There are plenty of resources in Barstow and other cities in S.B. County that homeless people can take advantage of, but many choose not to. Don't blame Barstow!
@@BackRoadsWest1 ya it's barstows fault and if you live there then it's your fault 😠
I live in Utah. You must not be familiar with what's going on in towns similar to Barstow. Please explain to me and anyone else reading why Barstow, and similar towns faced with this situation, where it's they're fault.
We have bag people in our parks, and throughout the city of Fullerton.
@@beekeepermariadelgado6806 so here's the deal homeless people in other countrys get a bus ride to the end of the line and in San Bernardino country Barstow is the end of the line.
I remember the big turtles, they had to keep the gate open ,wasn't allowed to close it turtles have to be able to go when they wanted to do I remember keeping the gate open, cause I didn't want a fine.
