Are the spikes capable of causing pain to a person handling them? I'm curious as to whether they are like thin quills or just very thick hairs that look like quills.
Hedgehogs of Asgard thanks for the reply, I'm wondering if these are suitable as a new roommate. They seem quite placid and different from other candidates.
Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi they are very sweet pets. Do keep in mind they hibernate so you won't see them out for up to 5 months a year. And they can be difficult to get in certain places, like the US - they are relatively rare and usually cost around $700 + shipping. They are less expensive and a bit easier to come by in most European countries.
Hedgehogs of Asgard thanks again. I'm in Scotland and the nearest ones are in the middle of England around 500 km away. The price here averages £200 (about $250) for baby ones or an adult with enclosure that needs rehoming. Been doing a bit of research and the little fellas look like interesting creatures to have around. We have a young human who loves animals, she got along with the pet rats although here they do not live long (and they tend to have tumours and other problems due to genetic issues) they're gone now and although they are nice we just can't deal with £200 vet bill each time one of them gets sick. From what I've learned so far the tenrecs have good temperament and health in most cases, looking forward to more uploads.
clearly the superior hedgehog
Actually tenrecs are more closer to elephants then hedgehogs
What a strange little critter
What a cute little elephant!
True since tenrecs are closely related to elephants
OMG sooooo adorable!
Cute tenrec.

As a tenrec owner myself

They are quills but not very sharp, not like those of a hedgehog (but they're much smaller as well).
