Lotta people complaining about this being too slow or simplified, comparing it to systems that have big auto loaders and such on planes... But the reason the Apache is designed like this? You can land a helicopter on any flat piece of dirt, use normal people with no equipment to reload it, and send it on it's way again. It makes the apache more versatile, not requiring all the crazy amount of infrastructure like most modern weapon systems require. And if it takes a while to load one gunship, that's fine because there's more support capable of filling the gap while one is in service. Its the same principle right down to squad level infantry tactics, and no matter how sophisticated we are sometimes the simplest solutions just work better.
well I mean they are talking in the bird's internal the whole time but yeah. when you do something a lot and you're good at it, troubleshooting comes naturally. Coming from an Army Aviator.

Interesting video there. I assume that was a gunship coming in for a hot reload of ammo and then back out to do more close ground support. As a 0311 grunt myself it gave me a greater respect for our own air wingers and the Army etc..Aviation Ordinance...you know what I mean. You could see the care these guys take in maintaining that gun...that gun that will be a great help to some grunt. Those 30 cal shells are devastating. The views from those gun cams above don't do them justice. From the ground it looks like a small cal mortar going off but coming in at super sonic speed. I was always glad these were on our side...they can see what is just ahead and all around you and be your eyes and big brother. A 10 Pilots are my personal favorite. Those guys fly so low you feel the heat from the engines. Always liked all those Pilots ..but you have to like the guys who maintain the weapons etc too....feel the love POGs' ..hehe
Allen Cowan Caliber is just the internal diameter of the barrel and can be used in different measurement systems. 30 cal is still correct as long as he means 30 mm cal and not 30 inch cal or whatever.
7410n0 exactly....and the purpose of communication is to get the idea across...and you knew exactly what I was talking about it. Allen is correct regardless....the Caliber of that weapon is 30 millimeter.
Seriously, who in the US (other than perhaps mathematicians or engineers) sticks "caliber" after a metric round, regardless of how 'correct' it is? Regardless, omitting "millimeter" from his post leaves an uniformed reader no idea the actual caliber of the Apache's gun. But hey, he's a Jarhead, so I suppose that's understandable. ;) And Spiked, "rounds" are not necessarily "metric determined". The US has long used the English 'Imperial System' for a variety of things, some weapon calibers being one of them. Also, the second number in "30x113" is not the diameter of the casing, it's the height (or length, I suppose). You didn't specify, just wanted to clear that up.
imagine landing and say : "aight here your delivery" another man : "ok here your payment" * gives 30mms * delivery man : "aight have a good day" * flies out *
Our gunships in Nam had problems with jamming using belt feed. The XM18 pods where you cranked the rounds in would be de-link as the rounds went into a drum. Very reliable. You had to really be on the lookout for long or short rounds in the belt ammo when reloading. Damn wish we had had 30 mike mike cannons! Good bye Charlie
I was in the USAF for 25 years, our career field was Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist. We loaded/unloaded all the munitions on fighter/bomber aircraft and did all the maintenance on the Bomb Racks, Rocket/missile launchers, gun systems, etc, we were called Weapons Troops back then, 462's now 2W1's (career field number/MOS for you soldiers). I worked on F-111E's, F-4's of all series, Reccy F-4's, OV-10'S A-10'S, F-15C/D/E STRIKE EAGLES, F-16'S, and B-1's.Loaded several millions of pounds of munitions over those years. Even after making rank and being a shop chief I still got myself qualified to load the training munitions, flares, rockets, AIM-9 missiles, 20mm/30mm ammo. We even loaded/maintained the M-60 machine guns on the OV-10 Bronco aircraft. I hated the office and wanted to be on the flightline with my troops, helping them we were short handed, not answering phones and stupid questions from 2nd Lt's fresh out of the Academy (you know who you are)!!! Even worked on some Navy aircraft when the diverted to our base in the sand box. When I was stationed in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) we worked on South Korean F-4's, OA-37's, F-5's and F-16's, Worked on the A-10 up at Eielson AFB Alaska and we pumped thousands of rounds of 30mm in them puppies. Even though this is an army video it brings back lot's of great memories. Thanks for the video and your service.
Thank you for your Service! My dad was born in 43' so not sure if you are anywhere near his age or not. He served in the USAF on Okinawa and loaded munitions on aircraft. If i remember correctly he said they had B-1's constantly in circulation but not sure the reason. He was there during Vietnam but didn't go mainland. Have a great day and thanks again.
Frank, can you explain the color code of these rounds? I know black is armor piercing and yellow is usually high explosive, but I've never seen an AP-HE round....I've seen AP-I or HE-I in 30 mm.
The clips are supposed to work in theory if you look closely at the auto loading rotater thing, though it seems they couldn't get the helicopter to strip them so they had to hand strip the clips themselves
I love how I see this video at least twice a time every year for the past 4 years in my recommendations. Always gotta stop what I’m doing and rewatch it simply because how badass this is.
you can tell one guy is newer and the other has been doing this for a while. I love the amount of care, work and dedication it takes to do this. It really shows you love your craft.
+RingSight91 a tunguska style system loads bullets as a tokyo wagon does people in rush hour, this should be the same. I think at first part of the vid it tries to make an autoloader work and it does not and so starts th 1 , 1 loading procedure.
Sean Monaghan I was thinking the same thing--it's a very cumbersome process for something that is so routine (and might need to be done in a big hurry, in the dark, etc). The fact that you have to manually remove each round from the clip is ridiculous.
Tim Iafolla its not always done like that, those black trays can be fed into the bird too with the rounds still on it. the bird will strip the rounds from the tray and spit the tray out on the other side of the loader. sometimes the rounds don't sit right in the tray though, and it jams the system. so occasionally, they'll just take rounds off the tray and do it like you saw in the vid.
Fascinating video. We rarely get a look into all the efforts required to prepare these amazing machines to work right. Hopefully the owner of the property hit by those little bullets will have some insurance; they'll probably scratch it up a bit.
Very cool. Sometimes learning stuff behind the scenes like rations, supplies living conditions are just as interesting as learning about the tactics, weapons and formations.
You what really surprised me here, that instead of walking towards the Apache he just stood there and the Apache was the one who slowly flew over where he was and landed as carefully as a butterfly.
WARNING: WHILE LOADING, DO NOT DROP POINTY END DOWN. I love how the whole operation hinges on them not losing the crescent wrench with which to crank the shells in. Crescent wrenches were made to lose..
+Evil Pumpkinman I've seen the result of being hit by a few of these little bad boys. the only thing they were capable of doing was bleeding out in the fetal position.
Man that automatic loading system is sweet, here our ordnance guys are loading cobras with a damn speed handle into our shitty linkless 20mm feed systems.
+MR.Chickennuget 360 I don't know how it compares but it's a solid gun. We had some issues with the linkless feed system when they came out for the AH1W but they are fine on the new AH1Z. I've only seen a few jams in the last year since we converted so for the most part they shoot just fine.
it's what the military calls Space Available. if ur a vet u can fly on any military cargo plane for free if Space Available. move cargo and ppl around when u can by whatever means is available
pinz2022 Turning over a turbine engine like that to get it started probably takes more power than leaving it running. I mean you know how your car has a whole second electric engine and a battery just so you can start it again after turning it off?
I was a Marine Grunt, I sure came to love these Army pukes. God knows I hate to admit it, but these Apache guys, the ground crews, aircraft, pilots, you're good to go!
This is my favorite gun, along with the 20x42mm Neopup. Notice how the Apache m230 chain gun, 30 x 113mm, is linkless, to avoid metal getting sucked into the engine. The ground weapon uses links. Pruno
I was infantry so my job had nothing to do with this. Everything I know is 3rd hand knowledge. Having said that: 1. Aircraft stays on because its faster to get it back out on mission, or they're just topping off so they are ready the next time they go out and they go park it from here. 2. There probably is a faster way but sometimes the mechanics don't work properly, you can see in the video he tried to load the whole clip first and was unsuccessful. 3. Cuz fucking freedom that,s why. 4. He probably just used a GoPro. Not sure if this is sensitive material but its been up for a while so I'm guessing it's fine. I had some Bradley vids back in the day but I lost em all, would love to have put em up.
i'll try to answer your questions the best I can. 1. It is a Hot Pit. This means that the bird stays running to help keep time down. 2. There are a ton of procedures that you have to go through to do anything related with not only ordnance but just about anything hazardous in the military. 3. Because 30mm + Apache = Freedom Boner
+MarsGaming LP A-10 is a bigass plane with fixed cannon, AH-64 is "smallass" helicopter with rotating turret. AH-64 must be able to be loaded in rough terrain where you can't bring a specialized truck to do the loading for you. You don't expect to see A-10 taking off in the middle of nowhere unlike Apache. Besides what I saw from the video they were trying to load it by using those plastic clips holding ammunition together but it didn't feed correctly so they did it by hand.
+Vesardi247 its an old arse Plane with an old loading system but can load 1250 rounds in 10 mins That's my point if the Apache Had a Way to load fast it probably would the problem isn't in its age

Right Alex, if Raymond lived here in Cal he would know how deadly the 11th round is and why we're not trusted with the " DEADLY 11TH ROUND"
Tim Bowles I leave one in the chamber then put the mag in lol
Tim Bowles breaking the law
In the UK my Remington semi auto is limited to 2 plus one in the chamber !!
I love how he manually put the last round in the gun chamber

You have to pay your mail carrier in 30mm rounds...at least it worked for this guy.

This was a great vid, the trust the pilots have in you guys, the teamwork, the insight into just one tiny process of thousands to keep a machine like this operable is so cool! Thanks for the upload :)
So there's actually a process?

Yes

So you dont hover over the ammo crates to refuel on ammo?
@@matthewp2123 just press the x button duhhhhhhhh well its still an awsome video
That'd be 30 MILLIMETER, not " 30 cal". Geez, you make grunts look bad.
But hey, he's a Jarhead, so I suppose that's understandable. ;)
And Spiked, "rounds" are not necessarily "metric determined". The US has long used the English 'Imperial System' for a variety of things, some weapon calibers being one of them. Also, the second number in "30x113" is not the diameter of the casing, it's the height (or length, I suppose). You didn't specify, just wanted to clear that up.
Murica!! (that's who) ;-)
Soldier: Casually rearms an Apache with 30mm shells
11 million people: *interesting...*
well... you never know
maybe soon we will fight china for banksters money
And 6200 people downvoted the video because this was not the type of slinging they were expecting. I found it pretty damn neat, though.

another man : "ok here your payment" * gives 30mms *
delivery man : "aight have a good day" * flies out *
So this is how you feed a partner that Identifies as an Attack Helicopter.
Thank you for your service, indeed.
Frank, can you explain the color code of these rounds? I know black is armor piercing and yellow is usually high explosive, but I've never seen an AP-HE round....I've seen AP-I or HE-I in 30 mm.
Thank you for your service, brotha!!! What an amazing "job" to have!!! I've always regretted not enlisting. Much Respect to all you Soldiers!!!
Thank you for your service.
Love how the military designed the “stripper clips” for these rounds but then it has to be hand fed anyways. Thats just what i expected
Videos like this are satisfying :)
@@haylus_5242 the guys loading it know what they are doing why would they try to use the clips in the first place if they know it does not work?
The clips are supposed to work in theory if you look closely at the auto loading rotater thing, though it seems they couldn't get the helicopter to strip them so they had to hand strip the clips themselves
@@barnyhitman they tried to get it to work but either mechanical error or user error stopped them.
Probably used to transport this rounds much easier as seen in the video, without carrying a huge ass metal box full of munitions.
That's a badass mail courier.
USPS same day delivery!
that reloading procedure needs to be improved.
For such a complex mechanism, that's not easy!...How about volunteering to give it a go?..Or perhaps you would be out of your depth?...
+SKYLANDBAK that procedure needs re-engineering. don´t got that ballistic.
+RingSight91 a tunguska style system loads bullets as a tokyo wagon does people in rush hour, this should be the same. I think at first part of the vid it tries to make an autoloader work and it does not and so starts th 1 , 1 loading procedure.
+RingSight91 Check the loading procedure of a A10 cannon. Pretty much performs like an SPAAG reload. This is the way it should be in Apache.
+RingSight91 in war there may not be time for paved work areas.

Basically.
This never gets old
She's beautiful man. Such a pretty cannon... It's always good to keep the babies fed
I thought it was cool watching them be fired at things. It's even better watching them get loaded up.
just watching things being loaded up is cool, i understand why you like this
Larry Johnson its amazing how difficult it is to reload, you would think they could make it easier for the crew to reload faster
Sean Monaghan I was thinking the same thing--it's a very cumbersome process for something that is so routine (and might need to be done in a big hurry, in the dark, etc). The fact that you have to manually remove each round from the clip is ridiculous.
Larry Johnson I know right? I study mechanical design and production technology and found this extremely interesting.
Just paint it up and call it modern art.
The longest reload animation.
Can’t take all of the equipment to it.....
I never knew helicopters were powered by giant golden crayons

If they were receiving these badboys, I don't think they'd be any shape to dislike them. :P
+Evil Pumpkinman I've seen the result of being hit by a few of these little bad boys. the only thing they were capable of doing was bleeding out in the fetal position.

vetal215 Where is that statistic from?
Man that automatic loading system is sweet, here our ordnance guys are loading cobras with a damn speed handle into our shitty linkless 20mm feed systems.
You work on the M197? i was wondering how that thing holds up compared to the M230 on the Apache.

Chris Feeney Umm, wouldn't it have been easier to do this with the rotors shut down?
pinz2022 Turning over a turbine engine like that to get it started probably takes more power than leaving it running. I mean you know how your car has a whole second electric engine and a battery just so you can start it again after turning it off?
Does it take Glock mags?(lmfao)
yes glock puts 2 extra ones in the box.
Does it have kolibri mags?

But hey, if you serve, I don't care what branch, you're good in my book an iGY6 brother!
It looks like you guys are professionals and know exactly what you’re doing while also making it up as you go.
Man i miss the times when RUclips is a platform to upload literally anything and you don't need to think about demonetization and strikes😥
You still can if you don't use music
This is my favorite gun, along with the 20x42mm Neopup. Notice how the Apache m230 chain gun, 30 x 113mm, is linkless, to avoid metal getting sucked into the engine. The ground weapon uses links. Pruno

From the title and thumbnail, I expected someone firing off rounds of 30mm out of a humvee turret
What I got was in no way disappointing
Good luck fitting a 30 mm Cannon on a humvee.
MC Siggy Z I expected a belt fed loader just eating shells like there rice grains but this is just as cool.
Clickbait title but still a sick video non the less
@@FUNKER420 is that a challenge?
30mm? 😂
3 questions.
1. Why did the pilot leave the helicopter on?
2. Why is there not a faster way?
3. Why is this so sexy?
Almost forgot, how do they record and upload this? Do they need permission to record? And did they bring their own camera?

Thank you very much.
+Norbert Geisler Yeah...its not like it matters if isis is watching, not like they could fly the damn thing to begin with.
i'll try to answer your questions the best I can. 1. It is a Hot Pit. This means that the bird stays running to help keep time down. 2. There are a ton of procedures that you have to go through to do anything related with not only ordnance but just about anything hazardous in the military. 3. Because 30mm + Apache = Freedom Boner
you know I dont understand why all the cool military videos are from 8 or more years ago but this was still cool to see a Apache being reloaded
the title should be " A free tutorial how to reload an apache with 30mm" :P
Exactly lol clickbaity

Reloading in battlefield 4 is so easy
Only the waiting time is soooo irritating

I just watched all 9 1/2 minutes... and am now wanting to do what his dude does.
That's the point
They designed the cannon like so. If the gunship was stolen the thieves could never figure out how to reload it.
Well..all they gotta do is watch this video
If they watch this video they will know how to reload it

"Yes Mohammed?"
"How do I reload this thing?"
"Uhhh hold on"

age of technology and we load apache cannon rounds one at a time by hand?
+Theonlypayne old ass helicopter is old technology
+depholade not too old and That's not the reason Look at the a10 and its loading system
